Things that would help ...

... are they planning on a Friday arrival, or EAS on the Thursday?
... are they planning on staying the full 4 days?
... how much kit are they bringing?
... where abouts are they coming ashore/landing at?
... where would they be able to travel to in order to meet up?

This will arm any prospective lift-givers with some information upon which they can base offers.

I would suggest that your friend takes a flight from Sumburgh Airport either direct to Stansted Airport, or to Heathrow via Glasgow.
He could then National Express coach from Stansted or Heathrow to Newbury. He could arrange to be picked up by someone from the forums as an alternative.

Something to bear in mind is that it is posible to get a 40% reduction in the flight from Sumburgh to Glasgow because of the ADS. Your friend living in Shetland would qualify.
