View Full Version : UT99 SLV - abusing map bugs?

hi,

i just wonder if hiding with an slv UNDER the base is abuse of a map bug

since most of the maps on the server are not built for slv gameplay, some of them give the abillity to hide under the map itself riding a slv
maps like: base9, ace of space, temple of bla, wootabulus, and a few more

when its pretty easy to hit someone under the base on woot or ace
its pretty impossible on base9 and temples, since this areas are really only accessable with an slv

so i just wonder...

I would hope it isn't  . Just as easy to jump on a slv and bring down the enemy flag carrier with a rifle shot to the head!~ Game play in my opinion. If you can't drive a slv well, learn to, it is a slv server anyway. :icon15:

I guess this is a question about the "Abusing map bugs will get you banned" message that gets blatted to the SLV servers automatically?

If so - I think that was mostly put there to stop the ridiculous fastcap cheating that was going on. To flag a cap within 2 seconds (less than 1 second in many cases) is not good for gameplay as it gives the other team no chance to recover their flag and also makes a mockery of "honest" fastcap record attempts.

I'd imagine it could also be stretched to include, for example, hiding outside the map (several maps have holes where you can get behind and disappear) - if they do that with the flag it can kill the game.

It's that sort of thing I, as an admin, would consider lame, cheating and deliberately sabotaging the game for everyone and yes, worthy of warnings, kicks, bans etc.

Flying a SLV around the map? No - not unless they were making no attempt to return to their base and score with it even when it's safe and putting themselves somewhere that the enemy is very unlikely to find them. Even then I personally would be unlikely to step in unless requested by other players.

Bottom line: Is their behavior stopping others enjoying their games?

Such as hiding in the Damn Dam on a Dam to far.

It took me 4 years to find it. Ok I did not find it but saw Her Lovership emerging stealthyly in with afterburner full on.:deg:

Thank you Lover :spin2:

if a deemer can fly there then so should a SLV.

maps like Face are a good example

I think that abusing a map bug cant be compared with hiding somewhere, wether u know about it  (or not, Visine ) :deg:
After all: this place is part of the original design of the map and you can go there too.:icon15:

absolutely.

Hiding in places properly designed into the map is good map knowledge and to be applauded.

I was annoyed at myself that on a map i had played from way back on TrufF's and thought i knew had a hidey hole that had eluded me.

Speaking of which, there are still many maps that have the ridiculous records (.301 seconds on one of them). Can the admins reset these so that we can actually try for real, honest records?

thanks.

to be honest, i think sometimes hiding with an slv is killing the game
specially on base9

it takes ages to get an slv when the server is full, and many people just dont know its possible to go unter the map
so they dont even try to search the efc there

to dam too far...

there is one hidden room on the backside of the dam, you can enter it through the waterfalls, one slv/deemer inside

and there is one room on each side containing the amplifier, its on the ceiling when you leave the rocket room, behind that brown cover on the ceiling

It would be nice!

Unfortunately, these seem to be locked into the "master inis" which our system replaces the server configs with on every crash/restart - and us normal admins don't have access to them. We need Igloo, Neophyte or one of the MPUK Staff to edit them I think.

I certainly fly under structures with the flag.

This is because it helps me avoid a lot of enemies.

My enemies can also do this.

My enemies can also fly slvs under the structure and shoot me or collide with me. People who are accurate snipers are good at this...er...like you Sika!

Therefore it would seem it gives me no unfair advantage.

Hiding is as much part of the game as running away or attacking - its a valid tactic.

BTW - the whole space is the map not any structure contained in it. Using any space in the map surely isnt exploiting a bug - which is an unintended outcome of a coding error.

Here are the hiding places on CTF-Damtoofar for the noobs among us, so that nobody can claim anymore there would be "unfair advantages". These places aren't that well known, because most of them are unaccessible for the flagcarrier on non-SLV-servers.

Ok so here we go.

First the four obvious hiding places:

666kb.com/i/alt97i3kyqofa5q0u.jpg

The redeemer-room on the backside of the dam. The two entries lead into the same room:

The small amp-room in the blue base:

And the same in the red base:

perhaps we should make a thread with map secrets
