absolutely.... although its a shame their is no way of alerting the owners to this.. if a cafe is so bad at security, an email telling them to take steps would go a long long way to making the owners move..

although at the end of the day, the onus is on the cafe owner to get it right first time.. every time.. My shop has never been banned from any server so far, and I spend a lot of hours each week making sure it stays that way.

if you didnt use that new UTDC i would never know that i had that in my ut instal.
i dont know how i would get by without play in MPUK servers , think i would get wild,lol.
i like most of the people that plays there cause they are very fine people.

I wonder how much work it would be to announce the original nickname of a player when he joins, just as currently his rendermode and operating system are presented. Eg:

As a coder, this is the kind of technical challenge that I relish, and I have actually written the code to do it. Even back in Truff days there was a system in place to protect the admin's nicks from being hijacked.

Protected nick & known IP/range. If not = kicky.
We have more sophisticated tools now, but that's the basic premis.

BUT, this has never been rolled out publically and I wouldn't be keen to do that. I think it would be viewed negatively by pretty much everyone (including me when I want a quiet game under a fakenick to avoid being asked about lag and rules and stuff) as an invasion of privacy.

The admins know when somebody fakenicks - when they search for them - and I think that's as far as it needs to go. Most fakenicking is entirely innocent and we don't sit around going "ooh, XXX is playing as YYY today - suspicion!" - we pretty much don't care unless they're doing it maliciously or to mislead. (Stealing a regular's or admin's nick, using a nick with "admin" in it, etc etc). And because faking is so common, we generally don't even notice that unless it's brought to our attention, or if it's someone intent on disruption, they'll be noticed for something else soon enough.

There's been quite a few occasions where somebody has changed nicks to avoid hassle or bullying, we'd lose them entirely if we announced to the world who they really were.

You specified a cpu speed on the command line almost double your actual. You must have known what it was as after the first few kicks by utdc it tells us you rejoined without it and played until banned by an admin.

Why is this bad? On SLV's it allows you to fly faster than anyone else, and when not flying it makes you appear laggy, warpy and makes you hard to hit.

Unlike the majority of speed hack kicks caused by laptops and speed-stepping, you explicitly told UT to run faster than it should and I can't think of any reason other than to gain an advantage, hence we've banned you all-server.

OKay - asked for some advice in the UTDC forums. I don't, personally, think there's enough proof of evil-thinking to warrant this ban staying on permanently. As has been mentioned in those forums, Asp /may/ have thought the AMD "stated speed" of the CPU is the actual and was trying to force UT to that.

So Asp - ban's lifted - it seems the only fair thing to do, but you'll still be booted until you stop running UT with that -cpuspeed switch. If you don't have cool'n'quiet running, UT will run just fine.

I'm not sure, to be honest. The only Strangelove map UT2k4 has is AS-Booyah so I'm sketchy on how the rockets work in UT99.

It could be players altering their command lines, lag from the servers, lag from your provider, lag from them... not sure how many would make them seem to run faster, though. Lag generally jumps you back a good 10 frames after the game catches up with it. Not much help to give on this side of the game - UT2k4's Assault generally never sees speed cheats, what with all the security and that.

In non-slv games it can be used to make yourself harder to hit.

To be fair, this has never been a huge issue. We were logging this when it happened before, just now we're logging and kicking. It can happen innocently too (especially laptop users), so it can't be viewed the same as an aimbot or similar. This is the only one we've found since kicking was enabled that's deliberately faked their speed, and as you can see, there's enough doubt that it wasn't deliberately to cheat that we've retracted the ban. Our protection now stops this abuse dead very reliably, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Make sure your velocity (I think that's the name of it on your slv hud) is maxed out, red, at 30. Then you know you're going full whack.

And if it helps, remember the slv update? Good news for you mate. =] Be sparing with the fuel mind!

Oh and yeah, always dodge into a slv take off, some guaranteed speed there too!

Thanks Lety. I've changed my mind on these now - I don't personally consider them deliberately nasty. We kick on speed hacks because they can disrupt the server, but all the ones I've banned for for mpuk I've had to lift the ban as there wasn't enough proof of motive.

So IMO, kick but let 'em in once they fix their computer. 101 mhz difference isn't that huge either.

UTDC 2.0 kicks lots of players, and we've reduced the sensitivity so that it doesn't kick for the most common reasons (corrupt memory etc). Those which get reported here are exact and specific matches. In a week I check around 200-300 logs and get maybe 1 or 2 hits which are reported here. As you state, the majority aren't trustworthy enough to ban somebody on.

The reports I post below are ONLY for confirmed cheats - and if you read the log you can see that, for example, the case of RJ45 / Jolanda and asxyyxs - the aimbot was running as a seperate process at the same time.

I'm confident that the ones reported here are safe bans.

Thanks - discussion on anticheat is always welcome - it might generate the perfect solution one day.

As for numbers - actually I think they are a tiny percentage. We get several hundred "new" players a week. That one or two try to cheat isn't surprising. Nor that some of the regulars will try a cheat once for whatever reason, find it's blocked and then try to play again without it. (Until somebody checks the logs and puts a permanent ban on them). We have a pretty tough reputation against cheaters so we don't get so many in compared to other places.

It's important to remember that at least with this bot he never managed to get this cheat on the server. He may have had something else that got past our systems, I don't know.

Please - any more regulars on our servers, just don't do it okay? I don't give a monkeys about banning those who come in from nowhere but I get angry and depressed when somebody who has played for a long time without any problems and who is known and respected by his fellow players goes and does something so stupid as to try and play on a public server with a Class 1 aimbot.

We have good anticheat, we check the logs and have a policy of naming those who get caught. We inherited this method from Truffs. It works and gives us amongst the cleanest servers in the world. If anyone gives a damn about the community here, just don't play with this stuff. I *hate* having to do this and I find it really upsetting. Mal has forced me to remove him from our servers permanently, there is simply no alternative for an aimbotter, whoever they are.

He played several games in one session. Despite lots of other players moaning and him being very blatant, NOT ONE person called for an admin for over an hour, yet we get blamed for taking so long to ban him.

Can't win as an admin!

I guess you do have it a bit rough, but to be honest you can't be expected to monitor every single game every single minute of the day...I for one think you all do a fantastic job.

My problem when I'm playing against someone who's cheating perhaps is that I don't notice. I'm not very good and get obliterated all the time, so it's par for the course. If I called an Admin every time someone was trouncing me you'd get fed up with me for crying Wolf all the time! :p

If I'm playing and someone swears, it doesn't really bother me if they're just swearing at themselves, (though I do sometimes ask them to watch their language). Never actually been around when someone's being abusinve to other players.

Today (at about 14.00/15.00 UTC) there was a player called "low*" or something like that on CTF #2, playing multiple matches with an aimbot. Would be nice if you could ban him.
