I am in the process of setting up a LAN gaming community for one of our forces. To get funding i need to know wot type of equipment is needed for say a 100+ LAN.
I know how to setup small lans and wot is required for this, but i have never setup a lan on this scale. So can someone please tell me wot type of server i would need and wot router/switches etc i would need to make this possible.

Maybe he's an army playing computer games? Like the soldiers in Iraq playing Halo 3?

Depends on your budget.
I see 50 player switches (48x 100Meg 2x Gigabit) going on eBay for about £100 to £150.
Then get yourself a smaller network switch, 4 or 8 sockets, everyone of them Gigabit sockets. Put one of the gigabits from your other switches into there, and all of a sudden, for about £330 at most, you have a 98 player network.
You now have two network switches your community connect to. Position them well within your venue and you can prevent cluttering your cables as much as possable.
In terms of servers, for a small time LAN (id imagine this is PC's) Put yourself together a machine yourself (Dual Core P4 2.6GHz or better / 4Gig RAM / and a 40 GiG drive / and a Gigabit LAN connection to go into one of your lovely gigabit sockets.
Get two of those spec servers, and stick them into your smaller network switch to get ultimate performance. All that stuff, probably just over a grand if you push hard.
Hope that helps.

Surely... Exactly the same setup and hardware?
..plus a few extra ports on the hub?

Most of these 48x switches that go for £100 are not wire speed btw.

Hey,
I couldnt find a forum for this so I thought id tag on to the end of this topic, Im thinking of hosting a small lan party (20 - 40). I have no trouble with the network but was wondering if anyone could give me advice on dedicated servers?
Im really looking to self build a couple of machines in a rack but wondered what the best hardware options were, Id be looking to host a few steam servers and maybe a battlefield 2 server (Depending on how the event goes)
Cheers for any help.
