The train from Newcastle is approx 85 pounds for a Saver Return (can return within one calendar month or depart)
The best route you want is Newcastle - Manchester Picadilly - Reading - Newbury.
thats not the quickest but it does cut out London which is an extra cost.
Newcastle - On th eastern router will get yah down to London Kingscross from there take the tube £1.90 to Paddington from there I think you can get to Newbury if not head for Reading then to Newbury. because this route is via London expect to add as much as an extra 20 pounds onto the ticket price if traveling before 9am (which im sure you will be if you are wanting to get there at a decent time)
I used to do the trip from Yorkshire first train left at 06:20 and I arrived at approx 1pm ish. So I reckon would take you another hour ish coming from Newcastle (well thats what took me coming from Jarrow Area.
try http://www.thetrainline.com for planning and even booking your journey, for around an extra 10 quid you would also be able to travel 1st class on Virgin/Gnr trains, gets you breakfast and drinks and a comfy seat :)

I did some research and found out that a two day return ticket to Newbury Racecourse will cost me 47 quid if i book 7 days in advance.
So thats....good. :( Well, tis better than 90 quid or whatever you said.
