My mate's been complaining of "problem with your connection" every few seconds for a couple of days. Thinking he was probably at fault I've been round to his today and checked the obvious (Hijackthis, Virus scan etc..) and everything looks fine.

I've set Pingplotter to ping our server for 25 minutes (at 5 second intervals) and his latency is fine. However the second he joins our server you can see his ping bounce from 20ms up to 800ms and back again. This continues over and over again.

Before he wastes the next 2 years on the phone to NTL are there any routing issues at the moment?

You tried a traceroute as well? I think it might reveal if it's a routing issue.

Pingplotter also performs a traceroute. Nothing obvious showed.

Ah ok sorry didn't know the program.

Hmm sounds very odd..when I had that sorta issue with wow it showed pretty quick which hop was the issue.

Has he tried turning off the modem waiting a good 10 minutes then getting a new IP once he turns it back on...that fixed some things for me a while back. I th ink thats how I got a new IP..I am guessing NTL cable user here mind!

What game you running on the server? I'm on blueyonder but could always check it out if it's a game I have.
