Looks like were going to have to take our straps back but not big deal really.

EDIT: The BBC has now changed the article. Nintendo will only replace any strap that brakes.

I'm not getting mine replaced, it's strong enough in my opinion. I think the proof is that of the millions of units shipped only a handful of people have reported breaking them. The n00b minority who don't read the instructions. It's good of them to offer the replacement though.

I second that, you have to be a bit usless to let go. Ive been pretty agressive in my use of the wiimote but havnt at any point felt it in danger of slipping out from my hand.

Not sure if you've noticed guys but I got the Remote with the Wii and the remote with Wii Play and the Wii play one has a thinner cord connecting the strap and remote... Maybe thats the problem?

I bought a Wii and whilst in use, the strap broke and the controller flew out of my hand and into the face of my wife. Although it came as a shock, she wasn't badly hurt.

Wiinner

My wrist straps are fine. Over the years I've managed to develop an ability to hold onto my controllers for an extended period of time without them flying out of my hand. My grip works well on plates, glasses and various types of fruit as well.

there was a post on digg - a wii strap held over 50 pounds of books, and didnt snap. If you snap your strap, you're a retard.

Must be fake :D :

I got one of the first Wii but after a few minutes playing the strap broke and the controller shot off and hit my partner in the face resulting in two broken teeth. She slipped at the same time falling into the TV set and smashing the screen. The TV was plugged into the surround sound system and consequently pulled it over and smashing into my CD and DVD collection. I advise anyone to be careful of the wii

Surely speed is more of a factor...I don't know the science but perhaps the force of someone pretending to swing a golf club(wii remote) and letting go would put more strain on it than the books.

I dunno...50 pounds sounds alot considering what the strap actaully looks like...be interested on which part they tested...as it was the string part that rips off not the plastic.

I think that's the article you meant. It shows the strap doesn't break under approx 12kg of weight and the experiment ends there so in theory it could hold considerably more. Proves my theory that a lot of people didn't use the strap, broke their TV, then snapped the strap on purpose to try and claim compensation. Or at the very least they must have been trying so, sooooo hard to break it by throwing the wiimote.

If we know how much weight it took to break the strap, the size of the strap, and the weight of the wiimote, can we work out the tensile strength of the strap and work out how much throwing force would be required to break it under the weight of a wiimote?

This calls for some experimentation. Hmm since i dont want to destroy my Wii strap i shall attempt to find the closest alternative to the thin bit, then get some of that, as well as similar but even thinner stuff and see how much weight it takes, and if a sudden shock will break it.

Yeah many independent tests have shown that the straps are fine under extreme pressure, they only brought new ones out to calm the media down. Nintendo though have since said if the wii remote is flying out of your hand ... hold onto it you thick ****, how many ppl playing Baseball or Tennis do u see throwing their bats away when they are playing.

Also in response to ppl trying to make claims for injury or "Wii-Elbow" Nintendo have come back and said do some Exercise you fat ****s! :P

Which is all true really, all probably claims from US where there first thought is to Sue.
