I presume before buying one you all read blogs and non/official sites and saw preview videos and youtube leaked demos, etc.
I know many were excited about them coming out and just wondering if the excitement was well deserved. I have read the thread about first impressions and they all seem positive but is it what you expected, has their been any disappointments does it not quiet live up to expectations or is it just the pure console of win! ??
I haven't got one yet but its on the list to get one after xmas once I am in my new house, all being well I hope I can manage to hold out until a black one appears (though I reckon this will be Easter time to match the PS3 launch). The games I was going to buy with mine were Zelda, Red Steel, Rayman and Mario hopefully these games will make me happy with my purchase from day one.

I only have 3 complaints about the Wii, everything else has been great and more than I had hoped for.
1. The browser will support JavaScript, but not Java. So no Applets then. They haven't said anything about adding it in later either, but I've got my fingers crossed.
2. Homebrew; Yeah I know Nintendo aren't big fans of that, but you can buy a £9.99 CD to get around their protections so I was hoping they would go the Microsoft route and encourage user created content. Again, it could be they'll do this later.
3. Virtual console prices. I thought I'd just pay whatever it cost, but when I actually came to buy some, I couldn't go through with it. It seemed so expensive when I own the originals anyway.

If they allowed Applets could that in somewhere compromise the system in anyway?

In all im very impressed with the wii, sure the virtual console is a bit overpriced but once they allow VIP stars to be used to buy VC games I wont see this as a issue.
And sure there have been issues around the world with wii remotes flying around and smashing things but Nintendo have seemed to have resolved this by introducing a thicker cable to new wii remotes on sale. I blame this problem on the fact that its very easy to get carried away playing the games.
I’m very shocked as to how my 50+ step dad who has never played a computer game in his life has played wii sports 2 nights in a row, Nintendo set out to introduce a wider audience into gaming and its worked in my household and for that they need to be congratulated.
And as for Zelda, well it is a wonderful game with great visuals and a great soundtrack, the gameplay is 2nd to non and the storyline is far darker then Majora's Mask and the game on a whole is on par to being even better then Ocarina of Time!
So in all it meet all and Expectations and Zelda is better then I expected, I could carry on telling people what a great little console the wii is but until you play on it you wont be able to appreciate it, and i have never felt as so protective and hyped about a games console like this before

Overall it's pretty much what I expected, no better, no worse. Considering these things tend to be a bit disappointing after all the build up, that's a compliment. The remote is as responsive as I hoped and Wii sports is exactly what you'd expect - not an awesome game, but a lot of fun and a great way to get to know the controller. I've spent most of my time on it playing Zelda, which is more of the standard Zelda greatness. After using the remote to fire arrows or horseback, I can't imagine ever using analog stick aiming again.
WiiMiis are a lot more fun than I expected. I thought of them as a throwaway thing, but it really is cool seeing WiiMiis of people you know hanging around in your games.

Java and Javascript are very different beastys. Java would require a virtual machine, any security issues could really compromise the whole system. Plus, would it not also require licencing from Sun if they were to ship it with the console, adding to the cost of the thing?
Anyway, when was the last time you used a site that required java applets? Beyond the falling sand game that is. :)

Yeah I'm aware of the security issues surrounding having Java running on the machine, I'm just annoyed it isn't there from the homebrew perspective. If Nintendo aren't willing to give up their own development tools (fair enough) then Java support would have been a decent compromise in my opinion. It comes back to the point that they don't seem to want homebrew on their system, and yet it's very easy to achieve despite the measures they've taken to prevent it. My feeling is they'd be better off letting us write games and applications for it with approved Nintendo software or an included language such as Java instead of pushing it underground.

Rocketknight im sure i remember in later stages of development, and @ E3 it was announced that the Virtual Console will offer the chance for homebrew software to be shared between wii users however I haven’t heard anymore on this, but were see remember its still early and Microsoft have only just released XNA a year after the release of the 360
