View Full Version : Wii impressions

Ok, I've been playing since I got back from work, here are some brief impressions. Maybe others can add theirs to this thread as we go.

Hardware:
Set up is easy and there are two quick updates (it's like microsoft all over again) as soon as you connect to the net. The sensor bar is much smaller than I expected. Console is about what you'd expect - clean, small and well built. The remote and nunchuck are small but very comfortable, and again very solidly built.

Remote:
Accurate and satisfying. A slight lag in general, but nothing annoying. The feeling of moving the remote around and the bat mimicking your movements precisely in wii sports baseball is cool. In Zelda (the only 'proper' game I have at the moment) you quickly adjust to the controls and it seems natural very quickly. As reported in reviews the remote speaker isn't the best quality and distorts at higher volumes in Zelda. Wierdly it doesn't seem so bad in Wii sports, maybe just because they are simpler sounds.

Shop:
Cheesy elevator music ahoy! I think think the virtual console games are overpriced, but I expect I'll buy one sooner or later. Golden axe is tempting me. There are about 10-15 games to pick from at the moment.

Interface:
Nice menus with nifty subtle rumble feedback. Your cursor turns with the remote which is a tiny feature but neat. The photo viewer is surprisingly good. I thought I'd never use it, but it's very fast and polished, even if it is simple. The doodling is fun, especially when you realise that every remote movement makes a difference to all the drawing tools. You can cut out a bit of photo and use it like a photoshop brush - move it around with the pointer, twist to rotate and move forward and backward to scale it. I didn't spend long making a wiimii - I just put on a huge porno moustache and left it at that, but the customisation looked quite versatile. News and Weather channels aren't enabled yet.

Wii Sports (free with console):
Lots of fun. I particularly like baseball, even though I suck at it. Golf seems like the most complete game. Boxing is very funny, but probably the least responsive. Tennis is a bit hit or miss, but there are a good variety of shots you can pull off. Bowling feels very much like the real thing and makes you want to take a full run up :) Boxing really does make you break a sweat. Me and my housemate naturally ended up facing each other doing full motions for pitching and batting in baseball and it was really fun. I nearly broke my laptop taking a huge backswing for a lob in tennis, and I can see injuries in bowling and boxing happening easily. All the games make good use of the remote speaker.

Wii Play (free with additional controller):
Basically a remote tutorial, but quite fun with versions of duck hunt and lots of other mini games. Pretty fun in multiplayer. Has a neat version of air hockey were you move the paddle around your half, but also change the angle of the bat by twisting. It's fun enough, but I can't imagine it'll see a lot of play once I have more than a couple of other games.

Zelda:
Graphically nothing astounding, but although the polygon count is low, there are impressive moments as you go on. The lighting and atmosphere is excellent, and the twilight world is very pretty. Played for three hours and still don't feel like it's properly started yet. I'm enjoying it though, and the last hour in particular is really turning into a good game. Definitely the darkest Zelda game yet, even more so than Majora's Mask. Looking forward to playing it lots at the weekend.

I've probably missed lots. There are tons of those classic moments I love in video games where you find yourself saying "that's so cool" for really neat little surprises and additions, both in the hardware and the software. I think the remote and the philosophy behind the console encourage those moments.

Im very tempted by this console, and I dont really 'do' console's on the whole, but this is just something very different to any other console out there atm.

problem is, even if I wanted to buy one, I cant - no stock anywhere 100% gaurentee on friday and beyond. probably next year maybee.

problem is, even if I wanted to buy one, I cant - no stock anywhere 100% gaurentee on friday and beyond. probably next year maybee.

Really? Because I just picked up a Wii in Gamestation in Blockbuster without a pre-order, they stopped open an extra 30minuets to sell the stock they had off. 8 Consoles and for some reason more games and accesories then they had units.

Best of all I managed to get an additional 3 wiimote/chucks so I will be spending alot of time playing 4P wii sports and apparently Component cables are hard to come by too but the store had one for every console they had.

Problem for me though is this has wifi connectivty and I dont really feel like compromising on a wireless router just to access VC and put the best used to the Wii Channels, good news is hardwire adaptar is in the works for early next year, hopefully in time for the true online component games.

Im extremly happy to have this along with excite truck, zelda and Red steel and even more pleased to know boot loader will work with all the old import GC games.

If you can buy one, do it. :D

As far as I know, not really.. However I'm slowly starting to hate xbox live. I think there is talk of friends codes so you can keep in touch with your friends using the wii message board (it's like a pin board). You can download old console titles (wii points, just like m$ points) . Not sure if there are there any multiplayer online games yet (or planned)?

Ok, I've been playing since I got back from work, here are some brief impressions.

Thanks Phil for writing that for us. I'm surprised you even found time to write all that with the added excitement of playing the Wii.

I picked up my Wii this morning at 7am from GAME. But it is no longer mine as i sold it on ebay for £289.00 last weekend (oh yes profit!!!!)

If you wanna know why, well i got an xbox360 3 weeks ago and didnt want to keep the preorder so i still brought it and sold it.

Will see how it develops before I get one, right now it seems it could easily just be a bit of a novelty whacking a controller around. its a low powered machine (compared to the 360/PS3/Gameboy), low definition video, no real media features, and no real online services so far.

a.k.a. work out what you want and buy that, not buying something and bitching about what it isn't. pretty much all the publicity for the wii has said how it's not going up against the ps3/x360, so i hope you're surprised now

Wii Sports is awesome :) The boxing rocks. Call Of duty 3 is cool so far, takes a while to get used to aiming with the wiimote. I've never played a zelda game before and not really into rpgs like that, but gave it ago because, well, it's zelda. Feels slow to get going. Will see how I get on :)

8th December 2006, 12:27
It's a games console that is just a games console, how is that too basic? My snes never played dvds, neither did my megadrive. I have a dvd player, and I have a media center pc, just why do I need a console to be anything but a console? As long as it plays games it's not "too basic", it does the job it's meant to, everything else is just unneeded bloat that adds to the cost.

Rich

Now that would be impressive If my megadrive played DVDs

its a low powered machine (compared to the 360/PS3/Gameboy), low definition video, no real media features, and no real online services so far. It's a console for playing games on, not a personal computer. It doesn't need high power (at last, a real testament to good games not needing gigahertz of computing power), it doesn't need high definition video (or video at all) as it's being plugged into TVs, not monitors/TFTs, it doesn't need media features - those are what the PC and DVD player have, and I don't need online services to play games - though they might help, and the Wii does have them....

It's for having fun - not being a "media centre".

Rich
8th December 2006, 13:12

And most TVs people are buying now are HD.. I'm not slating it as such as I will probably get one at some point, you are right it does look like fun to play. PLain and simple no hassle fun. Sure it dosnt need those features, but it has a DVD drive right? Yet you cant play movies on it, surely it wouldnt of been that much harder to make it a complete package.

nope it doesnt.

Really to say Wiis graphics arent up to much is very untrue, I think having the component cables helps. But yeh Zeldas pulling off some really nice visuals from the get go. But even still if I really wanted to look at HDR textures with full AA/AF I would just come play a PC game.

Just read this from Wikipedia so i don't know how trust worthy this is:

A Nintendo spokesperson confirmed that Nintendo plans to release a version of the console with DVD-Video playback capabilities in Japan. The spokesperson also stated that releases of the DVD-Video capable version in other territories are not currently planned. On November 8, 2006, digital media company Sonic Solutions issued a press release stating that Nintendo has chosen their CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator software engine to provide DVD-Video functionality for a future version of the Wii console for release in the latter half of 2007. Nintendo of America confirmed to GameDaily BIZ on November 13, 2006 that the DVD-Video enabled Wii would be coming to North America at a higher price point than the standard Wii. Even though software will be used to enable DVD-Video functionality, it "requires more than a firmware upgrade" and could not be implemented through the WiiConnect24 network.

And most TVs people are buying now are HD.. They are? I haven't even *SEEN* a HD TV, and they are apparently failing to sell spectacularly.

Apparently, people see no need for them, with conventional TVs being much cheaper, few ways to take advantage of the HD aspect yet, and the quality of existing large TV screens is plenty for most peoples requirements.

Anyway back on topic, I've always been tempted by the wii and am pretty set on getting one after playing wii golf today. Really impressed and sure I can get the misses playing a few games of tennis and such.

Really? I’m not sure but I suspect this is bullsh!t. LCD HD TV’s are ridiculously cheap compared to what they were a year ago. You can pick a reasonable one up for around £500 without too many bells and whistles. More and more “People” are picking them up for the space-saving advantages alone.

Back on track…

I’m very much looking forward to playing the Wii. My brother is getting one for Christmas and I expect we’ll dupe the rest of the family to playing a few rounds of bowling after the dinner’s gone down.

I have one and I can assure you they look stunning (Jaw dropping almost)

However, what *is* annoying is the only HD stuff I have in on the Xbox 360.

You can get a Sky HD box, but whats the point in paying £400 for about 6 HD channels? (of which I would probably only watch Sky Sports HD)

So no other console before the Wii has been fun to play then? Come on! Remove the rosy specs afty.Correct - the games on other consoles have rarely piqued my interest - Monkey Ball (IIRC?) is the only one I've ever really enjoyed. Just about all the games have equivalents on the PC, so if you own a PC (as I have continuously for about 15 years) there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to buy a console.

I find traditional console "joypads" to be cumbersome and annoying, and find it hard to play for more than 45 mins or so before my hands - in particular the thumb - starts to get very tired.

But seriously, what reason would a PC owner have to buy a console? If people start listing games as an answer to this, remember that equivalents for just about every major release in this country exist on the PC - the truly huge titles like Halo etc. which have the consoles early success pinned onto them are complete replicas of PC games... I just never saw the point, but perhaps someone could enlighten me?

Now, with the Wii having an entirely different method of play - something I cannot experience on my PC - I will seriously consider buying one.

Fair enough if you've never found them fun. But you tend to have a habit of coming out with a statement and making it sounds as though it's some kind of universal fact.

But seriously, what reason would a PC owner have to buy a console? Well first and foremost, it's down to what suits your lifestyle. A console is just easier and more laid back for me. I can come home from work and not have to worry about drivers and such. I can get a couple of 360's in a room, invite a bunch of friends, order some curry in and have more fun than I've personally had at a LAN - but that's just me.

On the games front; a lot of the games that have had the most impact on me have been exclusive to consoles (or at least designed with consoles in mind and ported later); Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil 1 & 4. Now, I'm not trying to say that I haven't been equally impressed by games on the PC (HL, Homeworld, Starcraft) but when it comes to games, I honestly don't see a distinction between PC's and Consoles. They all allow me to play the games that I enjoy and I'm not so arrogant to think that one is better than the other.

PC, snes, 360, PS2, Wii, Amiga, I like them all!

8th December 2006, 17:52
ah monkey ball legendary game :)

the point in consol games (for me) was for playing with friends, 4 lads round 1 tv playing micro machines etc.

from there they all got hooked, they cant afford pc's so they get xboxs and go on xbox live, and i didn't want to be the only one being left out of this fun :)

no N64? Seriously that must have been the most fun iv had on a console ever, esp goldeneye (anyone agree?). Iv never really been in to the PS consoles as iv always had a PC to do the highly graphical and more 'intense' games. Personally I'v always considered a console a more social, fun and completely differnet experince to playing games on a PC, this is why I want a wii.

On the wii point, iv been calling stores of every kind all day to try and find one with no luck! I WANT A WII DAMMIT!!!!

Excellent bit of kit, I own every console pretty much made and this has to be the most fun purely down to controller. My brother and I played bowling and baseball for about 2 hours solid.

Zelda not really played it yet, Madden also need to sit down with it. Rayman is worth buying just for the rabbits, very funny game. Wii Play well it comes with a remote and costs about £5 so who cares, but good fun for a while.

Has anyone actually tried any VC games yet?

Virtual console seems a bit expensive right now, controller is 15quid, then another 15quid to pay for a couple of games! Be cheaper going to gamestation and buying a snes and loads of games for less.

Other than that it's awesome, Red Steel seems OK so far, a little let down by the complicated control system, but zelda, sports and play are excellent.
Off now down to the ol' bowling alley :D.

RocketKnight
9th December 2006, 08:51
Yeah I agree on the Virtual Console price problem, it's seems much too high. I would spend £15 on retro games in a snap if I got perhaps 5 or 6, but on this pricing range I only get 2 or 3 so that's put me off.

After only 1 day with this console, I've decided not to get a 360. I'll have way more fun with the Wii, plus the games are complete. It seems quite a few games I was interested in on the 360 are short or incomplete. In order to get the remaining content you have to pay for it and download the extra maps or whatever. Seems unfair to me if I've already paid full price for the game disc.

I have no particular choice in console its more so the games that make me buy it, I was always a fan of mario, donkey kong, and zelda so always ended up with nintendo consoles, but I also loved playing sonic, golden axe, streets of rage, echo the dolphin, toe jam and earl so I bought a mega drive, I bought my xbox on the strength of halo not because I wanted an xbox.

I used to play games first at mates house's, or with the xbox it was one of the lan parties.

I advise you all to try and play a game somewhere first before deciding on your purchase. My advise if go into game at a quiet period if they have a wii on show ask them to change the game in the console, I did that with the N64 got them to take Mario64 out and put bomberman in (even though it was mario64 that made me buy it anyways )

Im glad most people hear agree with my views and its nice to see Afty enjoying a games console, Rich as people said here keep the High Def / Hardcore gaming to PC.
Nintendo were not afraid to try something new both with the DS and Wii and yes its paid off! Its made console gaming fun for me once again and its opening up the gaming world to other generations, which is a good thing.

The joypad can only do so much and will always have its limitations, but to keep up with ever complex games more buttons and button combinations are needed, this i know for a fact makes games harder to play for the older generations
For exmaple my mum loved the Master system it had a 4 way D-pad and two buttons that was simple, Gave her a Playstation controller and she was confused as to which buttons to press, the DS and Wii does away with most of this and allows for easy interaction with the device, its simple but it works so well and for that Nintendo need to be congratulated.

so far i have purchased Zelda and Red Steel also got Wii pLay as part of the controller bundle x 2 so if anyone hasnt got wii play send me your address and i will get it off to you.

Zelda - for a start its amazing. the visuals are not fantastic but then again it is a GC port with the wii controller, so i didnt expect anything amazing and I am very impressed with this.

The controller - The controller takes about 15minutes to get the hang of which is fantastic. I really liked being able to just jump into the game without any controller difficulties.

The Game Itself - The game is fantastic. I am only on the third temple and im hooked. There is loads of little mini quests which allow you to recieve new items such as a second bomb bag and I cant wait to beat the water temple to see what happens next.

Wii Sports - This is the ultimate fun game! I have never had so much fun with a games console! I have a friend who isnt really into games and he is hooked on coming round for a game of bowling/tennis/boxing etc. I think in total over the past weekend I spent around 3/4 playing this with friends and the rest trying out Zelda/Red Steel.

Wii sports is the ultimate sociable game.

But there is a few things that annoy me. With tennis especially. I myself am not sure o which way you hold the controller in order to direct your shots so cant direct them so now I have a skill of 840 in tennis i have to ware the computer apponent out and just catch them off guard rather than beating them through skill (if anyone know how to aim shots I would love to know). Other than this, Wii Sports is a fantastic game.

Red Steel - I disagree with all the critics on Red Steel being a poor game. The control's are bad but they are not unbareable I have spent a good 3-4hrs solid playing 3pl[/U]ayer (how many controllers I have) Red Steel. My house mates took about 30minutes to adapt to the controllers and get used to the sensitivty etc before it was all fun and games.

Alll I say with Red Steel is you need to be patient and then you wil find the right groove with the controller. At the same time im not saying the game is fantastic, I do hope that in Red Steel 2 they make everything alot better and spend alot more time on making sure the controls are perfect.

Well this was just my little bit of input for now. I will be getting Splinter Cell - Double Agent this weekend and I hope the Co-op is better than that of Chaos Theory as this is the main reason I am buying the game.

It all just a shame that that wii can't do 1080p but im used to playing lower res games on the tv anyways so what I never had I won't miss :D I will still be able to use 480p.

NTL will be releasing their HD boxes mainstream Jan-March but if you live in Glasgow or Teeside you can get one now.

you have to remember that those batteries are also running a speaker, memery device, rumble feature and doing the remote features. If playing games for a long period its a lot of work

The way to aim in tennis is all in the timing. For a fore-handed shot (presuming you are right-handed) if you swing early you will hit the ball to the left; swing late and you hit it to the right. The reverse is true for the back-hand. Also by twisting the remote in various ways you can get top spin or lob the ball or even some wicked side spin.

My skill is at 1642 at the moment but I can regularly beat the computer character with a skill of 2000. Hope this has helped somewhat

You could always get some of those Urine powered batteries.

Recharge your Wii with your urm Wii.
