Madi, I do listen to music however I wouldn't say I listen to just one type. Anything apart from The Backside boys and crap boy bands like that will do.

You want extremes.. Hmm.. I admit, I have an S Club 7 song in my playlist :o but then again, the rancid tones of Rammstein are in there too (funny, funny band).

Being a member of the 'God Squad' as my brother would say, I like to listen to Steve Curtis Chapman, Delerious, DC Talk, Matt Redman, Michael W Smith, and The World Wide Message Tribe.

In the general UK Chart I must be one of the few blokes that likes Backstreet Boys, Westlife, etc... - It's the romantic in me that like to sing love songs.

Favourite Songs : Christian - Speechless by Steve Curtis Chapman
UK Chart - Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus (Catchy Tune)

Favourite Oldies: Wonder of you - Elvis Presley
Being a Liverpool Fan - You'll Never Walk Alone
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brithers
Lady in red - Chris de Burgh

Wishys megahints was brought to you in association with Vivanco, makers of the V-Max, smallest MP3 player in the world (Which has the build quality of a PC with PCCHIPS motherboard, unbranded ram, samsung hdd and delta CD-ROM built by a badly trained monkey, but lets not worry about that, its small and light)

You didnt include newsboys or why? (well the old stuff anyway) on that list (or if you've been to greenbelt, wheres Griff Pilchard?). Or was it cos they are kinda crap now.

Newsboys rocked hard. Their main drummer was absolutly forking amazing, always did a long duet (they had 2 drummers) in every live show. First time I saw him he threw away his sticks and solo'ed on just his hands... that is painful.

Also he once did a show where the whole drumkit and him were strapped very securly to the stage and rotated in the middle of a song so that he slowly went upsidown, still playing. WOW.

Anyone ever heard of Oingo Boingo? No? well you have heard the lead singers compositions.... he wrote the Simpsons theme and he write the scores for every tim burton film. His name is Danny Elfman.

If you want to try them out, you wont be able to find anything in british stores. But I recommend the "Farewell" album. Costs about £22 to get it imported through hmv, and took 4 weeks (dammit) but as its a doiuble live albums, with EVERY song being amazing and the least repetative album ever.

Oh yeah. The theme to the film "Weird Science" is also an oingo boingo song.

Recommended oingo boingo tracks (from the farewell album):
Little Girls
Nasty Habits
I am the Walrus (Beatles cover)
Change
Piggies

This band also have the most amazing bass player.

Sorry to preach, but as they are so amazing, I feel more people should listen. Shame the split in 1995 :( after about 20 years together (thats why the albums is called farewell... it was their last ever gig)

I'm a Christian too and i have to say that i really don't like Delerious! I can't really dissagree with the lyrical content, or them as people but i just think that the music sucks! as do all the delerious copycat bands that have sprung up in the Christian music world. (*cough*FRUIT*cough*)

I must say i'm surprised you did'nt mention Phat Fish in your line up? i think they're stuff is excellent imho cause its not in your face. (being good m8's of mine tho i might be biased, whadya reckon?)

Generally my tastes range from radiohead/smashing pumkins/pixies/Elbow. I hate Muse tho! I think they're rubbish and just trying to be like radiohead :D ! To the more quieter, U2, counting crows. There's also the really mellow stuff on cafe del mar i like (i highly recommend volume 6 & 8), and Air. The Police are amoung my favourites too.

After all music should be about the artists who make it not the industry.

An example is this! Under the Bridge by the Chille Peppers is generally regarded as an excellent track! why? cause its got a brilliant catchy riff, and its about his heroine addiction, which gives a real emotional true to life, genuine feel about it.

imo, Christian or not, its no different to someone writing about their faith! its still about them. So long as its a good song and its not seen to be bible bashing (or the equivelent of) theres no reason why it can't work. :)

Moby (before he sold out and making the **** he does now). I saw him 5 years ago at Greenbelt (Christian festival, thats now gone pants)... and he rocked with the heavy metal dance he played.

And there are lots of christian metal bands. There is a festival called Meltdown, which I think is like the Christian version of Ozfest.

I agree there. It's mainly aggressive, hyped marketing at the gullable that gets me. You turn on the ****ing telly in the morning and Five have their own tv program for example. Grr!!

Another example is the hype over Madonna and the excessive price for the tickets. That really does my head in. They interviewed a selection of people who went to queue to buy the tickets, yet not one of them could give a definite answer why they liked Madonna. I dont think the nature of modern marketing and capitalism should be making idols of people for the purpose of financial gain via common hysteria and blocking out alternatives.

To quote what I have to keep saying to my sister... "Just coz the ****ing Dreem Team on Radio 1 dont play it, doesnt mean it isnt good and doesnt exist". Unfortunately she's another one brainwashed and cant see this perspective. She refuses to even listen to alternative stuff - even just to see what it sounds like because her other `feared' friends might think shes `the odd one out'. They all think the same.

My whole conclusion is basically:- "Agressive, hyped marketing causes fear of being different". Most people cannot stand rejection which is why they buy this ****e music. Personally I dont give a ****, which is why I walk around wearing black, have black hair and stomping boots :D. Call it free thinking if you wish.

I think it was someone on here who suggested I go read Orwell's 1984 and I fully believe that that book has some valid points about modern society and how ****ed up it is.

BTW, I was being very cynical/sarcastic earlier from a joking perspective (as per usual I can pack more cynicism in than a Simpsons episode :D). I would have mentioned that I listen to Christian Death if I wanted to offend (which I dont want to!) although I have seen them live. I dont care for the lyrics (shouting the f word 15 times just doesnt do it for me) but I like the sound :D

Now I better go and do some work after that essay. Sensible comments only from here please :D

Radio 1 and other major radio stations refuse to play music that is "Christian". This is why Christian bands hardly make it to the mainstream. Exceptions are noted above, + Sixpence none the Richer and DJ Spoony (he played a DJ set at greenbelt last year, but I aint into garage)

Bands generally get into the mainstream by not singing songs with a Christian theme. The best I know of anyone doing well in the charts with Christian themes are Delerious with "Promise" (No 16) and "Deeper" (No 38) and Martyn Joseph (with a song that got to No 27).

Another thing that hinders Christian music is a law in this country which does not allow any radio station aimed at a specific religeous faith to get a nation broadcasting license. UCB (United Christian Broadcasting) have been campaigning to have this law abolished for years. You can pick up their radio station on am radio through sky, and all over the country. The way they get round the ban is by broadcasting from Germany I think.

Christian music has its own festivals as their music is only popular in chritistian circles due to the ban on national radio stations and other stations refusal to play their music. Also the festivals are also a place of worship, which would not be easy at a mainstream festival.

If you want to know, Greenbelt is a Christian festival that takes place over the August Bank holiday. Its not just music, but many seminars, stand up comedy and performing arts are there. Its more a family festival as opposed to a festival aimed at young people, Although the main attractions are the popular Christian bands. It takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse (it was better when it was at Dean Park as it was a bigger site). For more info go to www.greenbelt.org.uk

He no longer makes (imo) the religeous music he used to make, and no longer advertises himself as a Christian (that I have seen). :) yeah it does, but whats the problem with him not advertising himself as a Christian? His music is still great and as Cabe pointed out you can play the whole album through in an evening (not alot of albums are like that!)

I myself am in a band and we don't play outright Christian stuff! the reason? to be honest it puts most people off! I'd rather people enjoy my music rather than try to convert them with it.

*WARNING - Christian bit :D *
I hope that most of my non-christian m8s can see a bit of what christianity is like by the way i live my life! That does'nt mean that I plug it to them every time I see them, cause that just puts most people off.

Also, Moby lacks originality -- other people did his stuff years beforehand (late 80's), they just weren't "in fashion" then so didnt do very well. I bought play, listened to it once and then flogged it because it just sounds boring :p:

sorry for the late reply, i registered just to post in this thread :]

to whoever was talking about defenstration, they played at my school a few months back and were ****ing awful, i think i must have left halfway through.

my music taste is fairly varied, ranging from my favourite bands, the manics, radiohead, therapy?, joy division and nirvana to tori amos, dire straits, the smiths and the dubliners.

in the past week, i've bought the following albums (as an example of how diverse my taste can get)

dire straits - best of
the smiths - very best of
nirvana - from the muddy banks of wishkah
muse - origin of symmetry (how can anyone say they sound like radiohead?)
tori amos - little earthquakes
magpie lane - a taste of ale (local english folk band, pretty good)

i also like some heavier stuff, such as tool, system of a down, and nin...

oh, and radio2 rules :0

MUSE suck!!!

i know everyone is entitled to their opinion but in this case everybody else is wrong and i'm right :D

The music in itself is'nt always like radiohead its just their bloddy attitude! They try to come across the same a radiohead!

Radiohead have always been thought of as just outside the mainstream, which i think they like. Everybody would say 'argh, radiohead? thats music to slit your wrists to!' If you've seen Yorky boy on the TV he does'nt like it, he, well kinda looks wierd and muse are trying to BE the same thing. imho.

P.S. i was only kidding about everybodies opinion being wrong btw :D

tbh... its not the lyrics that make religious music ****... its just the fact the actual tune itself is ****.. if the music was decent i wouldnt really care what the words where to a certain extent as long as the tune was decent. And the only religious stuff ive heard ive just turned off straight away ... cus its either cheesy/sopy/ or just plain ****e.. words aint got nothin to do with me not likin the song.

I must have one of the most varied CD collections going: RHCP, Prodigy, Spice Girls, G'N'R, Limp Bizkit, Eninem, Metallica, Euphoria Collections (about 8), Various Now CD's, All Saints, Jamiroquai, Paul van Dyke, even Celine Dion (yes I think she has an awesome voice), even older stuff like Clannad, Fleetwood Mac and I love film soundtracks - Bad Boys, Gone in Sixty Seconds being my fave. Orchestral music like the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack (main them and elk hunt are the mose moving pieces of music Ive ever heard - especially on my KEF 35.2 speakers. And I even bought the soundtrack CD to Survivor for the quality theme tune by Russ Landau. My oldest CD (purchase wise) must be Haddaway (remember "What Is Love").

Oh yeah and I must agree with that guy who said Spooks as they are an excellent new band.

Only the bands bolded above are nu-metal.

Strych's Guide to Nu-Metal
Nu-Metal: Boybands trying to be rock bands, to appeal to the townies and little kiddies who think they are "well hard". Said bands are comprised of irritating americans with an arrogance and/or ego problem, who say "f*ck" far too often. Have little or no musical talent, and NO artistic integrity. eg Limp Bizkit (worlds biggest sellout, simply add new words to same tune over and over) Linkin Park (BOYBAND! BOYBAND!) Crazy Town (if you want proof, simply watch the video for Toxic or B-Boy 2001) and all those mentioned above

Slipknot and Korn, although not Nu-Metal, are over comercialised, and are utter sh*te

If you're going to like metal, please like PROPER metal, or kindly f*ck off :D

On a different note, I went with Lardy and Patch to see Spineshank at the Bristol Bierkeller on 3rd September. They were excellent, as were the support act, Dry Kill Logic. System of a Down are so good it hurts, not least for the incredibly deep and often downright bizzare lyrics (eg Chop Suey!, War, Sugar) and the mad guitarist/backing vocilist who looks like a pineapple.

And of course, no-one in the entire world of rock has better hair than Wayne Static.

And of course, no-one in the entire world of rock has better hair than Wayne Static. I have a few things to say, so here they are :-
1)I like some Limp Bizkit stuff. Not the new stuff, but off Three Dollar Bill. Songs such as Pollution, Clunk and Indigo Flow.
2) System of a Down are ****ing boss. I have just seen the vid. for Chop Suey. Hay Hay that's one k00l video IMO
3)Metalica (old metalica), Led Zeplin and Megadeth 0wn Linkin Park etc. a$$ anyday.
4)Less Than Jake are a good band:)
5)My last thingy. Wayne Static aint really rock. He's clased as NU-Metal by MTV2 and Kerrang...

Static-X have a traditional band set-up, and favour actual talent over looking pretty (you seen the guitarist???) and IMHO sound nothing like any of the over-commericalised cr*p all other Nu-Metal bands. Listen to "I'm With Stupid" and tell me its Nu-Metal.

Whoever invented "Nu-Metal" and decided that Static-X belong in there is evidently a f*ck.

And I hate Kerrang. They like Linkin Park, and constantly refer to Slipknot as "The Best Band Ever"

And they insulted Wayne Static's hair :(

Lovely, lovely, lovely Wayne.

nu-metal seems to get confused quite abit with grunge and both of them are losing their images. to me, music will be music, call it what ya like. and sclub7 will always be crap :p:

ooh, i just noticed this thread like months after it popped up!!

so. time to add my bit.

IT would HAVE to be any of this:

Trance : Anything basically, as long as it's not commerical cheesey dance crap (i hate ministry of sound stuff...). Paul van Dyke, Tiesto and Oakenfold are excellent... BT is also a SUPERB producer, all the albums are excellent, some really good tracks.

Hard House : most of it, it has to be 'hard and bouncy'

Indie (of sorts) : Bluetones (best band of all time, ever, really are the best). Ocean Colour Scene (also absolutely brilliant). Oasis used to be good. Travis are superb too, must go see them live.

I like some chart stuff too, but not much. Basically, so long as it's not mainstream, i like it.

ohhh, and i HATE r n b, garage, soul, and of that crap :P

thx gg wp
