We've now finalised the outline details of the World Cyber Games qualifiers and tournaments to be held at i8. Firstly, some background on the World Cyber Games, taken from the LAN Arena WCG website. LAN Arena are the UK co-ordinators of the World Cyber Games.

"If Athens 1896 reminds you of the Olympics, let Seoul 2001 remind you of games! Gamers around the World are now invited to share the excitement as they come together to compete against each other in the first World Cyber Games in Korea from December 5th-9th 2001.

Lanarena has been chosen as the Official Organising Body to manage and run the UK qualifying events and we will utilise the resources of all VGA venues around the country, and also i8 at Newbury to make this the largest organised gaming event in the World. Ever!

These qualifying events will eventually provide 20 British Gamers who will be given fully expensed flights and accomodation to travel to Seoul, Korea in December to represent our great nation, oh, and compete for a cash purse of over $300,000!

If that wasn't enough, the winners of the UK qualfying event will each share a cash prize purse as well!"

Pretty exciting stuff! i8 will be a prequalifier for the following WCG games:

Quake 3 solo - 3 seeds available
UT solo - 3 seeds available
Age of Empires 2:The Conquerors Solo - 3 seeds available
Fifa 2001 solo - 3 seeds available
Counterstrike 5v5 - 1 clan seed available

The seeds available mean that the top 3 winners at the i8 solo tournaments are seeded through to the UK national qualifier final, over 19-21 October. A single seeding is available for the winning clan of the i8 counterstrike tournament. This will stand the winners from i8 in good stead to win the UK national qualifier, and be flown over to Korea to compete for some serious cash.

i8 is also the UK FINAL for the Starcraft Solo tournament, with a prize purse of 7,450 pounds. This will be distributed as follows:

1st - 5,000
2nd - 1,000
3rd - 500
4th - 350
5th-8th - 150

A suite of PCs will be provided for those wishing to take part in the Starcraft tournament, and for those not taking part in the i8 event itself but wishing to take part in the i8 WCG prequalifier.

Rules and details on registration will be posted shortly. It would seem professional gaming has finally hit the UK!

Not too clued in with this whole Professional Gaming thing - would I be right in thinking then, that at I8 we will get a chance to 'qualify' for, say, the UT Solo event? Will the procedure be posted on the site / forum in the near future as I'd like to know what actually happens in this. I'd like to take a shot at the UT jobby if possible ya see :)

But can I just turn up on the day and sit my self down at a computer there and take part in say the UT Toruney?!?

I don't quite understand the procedure for being allowed to take part in the whole thing!!

Also, is it possible just to go there on the day and have a wander round watching people play!??

Cheers!

a) You really should sign up for the tourneys on the web site beforehand although judging by i7, they'll be worked out on the day. The signups are normally up a couple of weeks before the event AFAIK.

b) Dont worry - no-one has a clue apart from Wizzo... we just turn up and take our chances ;). Oh sorry - thats just me :p:

c) You can go as a spectator for a day and then play for the rest but It's probably cheaper and easier to just do all 4 days :D plus you'll end up sitting on your ass getting bored if you're spectating.

If you want to enter any of the tournaments you need to sign up as a participant. All participants will be eligible to play in the W.C.G. tournies, as well as the usual tournies.
Spectators pay £5 per day which covers entry from 9.00am to 6.00pm and they are there ,obviously, to spectate! (unless a kind friend lets them use their m/c to play a few games, but no tournies!)
