Pah gunna have to fork out for a dvd player finally.
After mine died I was the using my xbox to play dvds, and until recently I could have used the Wii to carry on that function after I sold the Xbox. But they recently released information that the Wii will not support DVD play back out-of-the-box, or in any planned addon! The feature used to exist but for some reason Nintendo want to focus there machine on purely game playing and nothing more.

They wanted to cut costs and apperntly it would add on a extra $30(£15?) per console to include dvd playback feature. And im sure 99% of people allready have a dvd player.
If not go to tesco and get a dvd player £17.99 go go go:)

They've stated there may be an external DVD player available later, but not for the time being. I'm quite happy it doesn't have DVD playback. We have 3 standalone DVD players in our house not to mention laptops and PCs, I wouldn't want to fork out extra cash for another.

And Nintendo have always had a thing with games consoles being games consoles and not mutilmedia devices, and i like that!
I wish not to pay more for a feature i wouldnt use

What model is this and have you tried it and how would you rate it?
And yes the xbox was no where near as good dvd players, very basic functions, couldnt use it with my kamelion, and the drive is so noisy I have to have the tv on full blast to drown out the sound.

on a side note I chipped my XBox and use XBMC (XBox Media Centre) which has a superb DVD player as well as playing every other video format know to man. Only downside is an inability to play HD, but what do you expect of a Celeron 733 ;)

As Cyberdrac said XBMC is brilliant!
Another great feature is you can create a share on your PC of all your movies etc, and the xbox plays them straight from the network drive.
Same for MP3's etc and the wicked visualisations it has :)

Yeah im glad they havent included a DVD player in the Wii.
If they had, then my DVD player that ive owned for 5 years would still be used.
No point really.
