Available on Jan 20th for £438 each (without flights, or ski passes, or equipment), but let's assume we can get £50-100 quid off by booking en masse, so it may be similar to last year's cost.
The chalet has a Sauna, Hot Tub, Childrens Room which has a TV, DVD, PS2 & Eye Toy, Table Football, Table Tennis, games, books and toys to suit all ages. Guests have use of a laptop via WIFI broadband internet.

Looks pretty good to me, decent resort area, good facilities.
Not ski-in or ski-out but sounds like its close to the main gondola and they do a minibus to Avoriaz.
All sounds pretty decent to me :)

dates
20th - 27th January. The preference was to start on 27/01/07 but unfortunately they're not showing as available for that date.

Can't see anything wrong with that. Dates suck as it's uni exam time, but i'm not asking you guys to take into consideration when planning. It would be nice to go but at the end of the day, this year uni does come first :'(

Looks perfect, max. occupancy is 26 so should cope with all the old boys + maybe a couple of fresh faces?
Only concern is how far to walk out/in to the slopes... particularly the back in (not too bad walking first thing, PITA walking after 6 hours on the slopes).
P.S. With table football, maybe I can make Zak get his python out again!

OK, they suck - the chaletfinder database isn't updated with the fact they're already booked out for the whole of january. sigh....

OK, here's the next one:
http://www.holidaychalet.com/default.asp?openurl=http://www.chalets.nl/chalet_details.asp?ID=512&lid=uk
20 spots, jacuzzi and sauna, ski-in/out, and a good mix of double rooms and cheaper stuff.
In Menuieres (http://menuires.en-test.net/photos/plan_stations/menuires.jpg) which is in 3 valleys - any opinions on Menuieres?
EUR355 uncatered (235 quid) average, catering is 45-60 Euros *a night* which almost doubles the price of the chalet. My money would be on eating out and self catering for that kind of delta; the town looks pretty big.
I've emailed them about net access, btw.

I've been to Les Menuires, it is teh good stuff. Cheapest of the 3 valleys resorts I think, apart form the stupidly low level ones.

Dates suck as it's uni exam time
bvark
4th October 2006, 21:05
Suggest some dates that would be better - it's not 'uni exam time', it's just your uni has exams.
Observe how we move from EUR6888 for 27/01 to EUR8792 for 03/02 to EUR9597 for 10/02 and wonder how much the rest of the group is likely to want to accomodate being one or two weeks later.
afty
4th October 2006, 21:09
Yeah. Also remember more monies = more popular part of the season = more congested lifts and towns...
Mid-late Jan is my fave time to go... there are several weeks in February I cannot do at all...
Drarok
4th October 2006, 21:18
Her0n's uni has exams the same time, as do (I'd imagine) at least a few others. I don't expect the rest of the group to accommodate for just me. But I thought that others might also be in the same boat.
(BTW, I'm not at uni, but the better half is).
her0n
4th October 2006, 23:39
A lot of unis (not all) have their semester 1 exams in the end of Jan. I know for a fact mine are between 22nd jan - 9th feb. I dont know exactly when until nearer the time. Obviously this isn't a good time for me, but I don't want you guys to plan around my exams as that is just incredibly selfish.
Choose a date which suits the majority. If I can't come then I can't come, simple :(
That aside though, imo I think late feb/early march is a nice time to go as the chance of it being bitterly cold is lessened :D

Yes Drarok your right i did mean *THIS* years, it was so long ago that it seems like last years now though :(
Is that 45-60 EUR a night PER PERSON or for the group :D?
I say book this one quick before it goes, or book last years one again.
am also not bothered about what time we go, as long as it's before April!
bvark
5th October 2006, 08:27
46-60 Euros per person per night - seems like we'd be paying a big premium over a restaurant for the convenience (EUR46 doesn't include breakfast, either).
Unfortunately the French school holidays (which contribute massively to demand) run from 04/02 to 06/03 this year, so feb is out entirely. I'll keep looking for stuff slightly later in March.

A couple of ideas:
http://www.chaletfinder.co.uk/viewproperty.htm?pid=28420
Chamonix.
Pros
Ski-in/out, wifi and hot tub. Looks to be available weeks commencing 6 or 13 January, or week commencing 3 February. Price - have enquired.
Cons
Not sure as to sleeping arrangements (7 rooms - 20 people) and also communal area might be small?
Have emailed owner with these questions.
http://www.chaletfinder.co.uk/viewproperty.htm?pid=28316&detail=1
Val D'Isere
Pros
Pure luxury. Ski-in/out, wifi, 2 outdoor hot tubs, sauna, 10 twin/double bedrooms all with en-suite. Complementary bar with beers, wines and spirits, all of which are included in the price of your stay. Champagne, canapes and aperitifs before dinner, and carefully chosen wines with dinner.
Appears to be available (looking on www.catered-ski-chalets.co.uk) for week commencing 4 February 2007 (if website is indeed up to date).
Cons
PRICE. Grossly expensive but thought I'd chuck it into the mix anyway for all you leet0rs out there just in case that cash was burning a hole in your pocket :p (wouldn't surprise me if Bvark came across this in his search and immediately discounted it due to the extravagent price tag!) £1630 per person <hears the screams> for the week commencing 4 February (if it is still available as the website states).
Anyway, just a couple of ideas. Probably no good. Pretty hard to find things that tick all the boxes, actually...... The search continues.

5th October 2006, 14:59
Just for reference, I would like to keep the chalet costs somewhere in the region of a couple of monkeys, or below.
Other options will be considered, but "individually decorated rooms" and a spare living room do not £1000 of value make :)
The one you found at Les Houches looks like a good chalet, but I've done Chamonix a couple of times, Les Houches is RIGHT at the bottom of the valley pretty low down, and you really need a car to make Chamonix a good resort if you're staying down low in the town or around Les Houches... the bus journey up to the top of the valley (Le Tour) is incredibly long, arduous and packed... I'm also not THAT impressed with Chamonix overall, the runs are strangely graded and Deux Alpes, Tignes and others all had much better pistes. If you're looking in the Chamonix area, try Megeve just a hop back down the valley into central france and then up some very steep little tracks... it's a beautiful town and has fantastic facilities and runs for beginners and intermediates (there's an ENORMOUS green which runs all the way down from a mid point lift stop to the town which is so peaceful and motorway like it's untrue) but perhaps not for the pros. Megeve is also rather expensive...
Baroness
5th October 2006, 15:33
Yup, fair enough. All of the above noted. Back to the drawing board!
As for resorts, I've got no idea whatsoever, so I was looking purely on a chalet suitability basis.
Ps. I'm not coming - just trying to lend a hand with the search, which I realise can be extremely time-consuming......!

5th October 2006, 16:04
It's very good of you. I don't mind Cham, but if I were taking a group without cars I would hope to stay in Le Tour or Argentiers... Chamonix the town is at the bottom of the valley (just a few minutes from the MOTORWAY!) and it's a long thin valley with skiing either side or at the top... but the higher you go the better runs you get...
It can also be very hard getting into and out of Chamonix on a standard transfer day because of the single road leading all the way up the valley... but if you stay in town (not always the best idea) this isn't much of an issue as you can hope on the motorway quickly. In addition, Chamonix is very large for a town (it's a big summer resort) and has LOADS of facilities/shops and fantastic selection of restaurants. It's a good family resort, and probably good for a "regular holiday" ski holiday. But for us looking for good powder, l33t chalets and low transfer times onto slopes in morning/evening it's probably not the best.
Aardvark
5th October 2006, 21:27
I wouldn't go back to Chamonix, it's too small and pokey. Somewhere like Morzine or Chatel would be a good call, also anywhere in the 3 valleys would do nicely.

I saw this a bit late, but if you guys are interested in doing this for 2008 Adam and I (Svalka and Bjorna on Al'Akir WoW) have 2 houses in Whistler Canada. They are next to each other and are ski in ski out.
We can probably get about 10 people in each and flights from the UK to Canada dont look too expensive. Snow starts the end of Nov and lasts till late March. The only time we cant is Xmas or New Year as thats when we get the big bucks for renting them out.

I think its more the MPUK skiing trip is restricted to people who are close friends, people who know eachother outside of the internet. Its kinda understandable, you pay a lot of money for 7 days skiing... and no one wants to ski with a Billy....
So, either start wrangling your way into the MPUK Skiers club, which seems to be heavily fortified by Afty and his "friends only policy" ( :D ) or start your own trip! Either that or speak nicely to Isca, maybe she will give you a reduced rate on one of her Chalets for the week... maybe not? I dont know??
