As many of you will know, Zakalwe has been in recovery over the last year and a half since his skiing accident.
All was progressing well, and Zak was on the ski-trip this year back to his manically boarding self. He was also back at work, initially part time and later at full time. However, a couple of months ago he started getting headaches (a worrying sign post-head injury) and has been back in hospital again.
He was in surgery last month to try and sort this out. Fluid had been collecting in the side of his head between skull and brain. This was sorted by drilling a hole and applying something sounding worryingly like hoover. (Technical stuff this brain surgery. :)) This was thought to have solved the problem.
A follow up operation last week has discovered an infection in the space left behind however. This is now being treated but will require a more extensive recuperation time. He is currently back in hospital in London and will be either there or at home at his parents for up to 6 months.
He's having another section of skull replaced with titanium in his continuing bid to become a cyborg too. I'm visiting him in hospital this evening to try and persuade the doctors to at least put in a few USB ports while they're at it. :)
It doesn't seem to be anything life threatening but it is a bit of a step back for him. I just thought people ought to be informed.

UPDATE
I went to see Zak in hospital last night.
He's really very well (for someone with half a skull missing). Up and about, talking and belching in very much his normal manner. :) His room in the hospital is a good one, with a balcony overlooking Lords cricket ground and full Sky etc. :) We played a bit of Magic, talked for a while - all is well, though he is a bit prone to headaches perhaps unsurprisingly. I made it my mission to fit in as many "Don't loose your head", "Feeling light headed", "off your head" etc. jokes as possible.
They haven't yet identified the infection, but have begun general antibiotics, and he seems to be on the road to recovery. More info will be posted as and when appropriate. Dave thanks everyone for their good wishes and looks forward to headbutting you all soon. :)
