As the DotA Community within Multiplay has grown, I have took it upon myself to set off a topic for the do's and dont's of DotA.

So lets start off with some Basic's here, the most popular modes you will come across are All Pick (-ap) there is where you get to pick a hero from the scourge or the sentinel taverns. All Random is where it will randomly give everyone in the game a hero from any of the taverns.

One big mode that can totally change the way the game is is Easy Mode (-em) this means you get 18 gold per tick of cash income and the towers are alot weaker, it also means that you gain experiance alot quicker this generally speeds up the item making process if you stay alive(obviously)

Another game mode that is quite frequently played within MPUK is Deathmatch Allrandom (dmar) - what happens here is that you randomly get a character from any of the taverns and you keep this hero until you die, once you die you randomly get another hero thats left within the taverns (i think the limit is roughly 34 Heros). So basically your team has 34 Lives, but you can also kill the throne aswell.

One of the MAIN things that you must try and do, no matter the game mode you need to do your best to stay alive especially in the early game it is one thing that you must try your best to do. For melee hero's your best not bothering to melee the creeps at all if your against a ranged character because otherwise he will harass you, what you can try and do is get the last hit on the enemy creeps to get cash but if you don't feel you can do that without taking a hell of a load of damage, keep your distance and just gain experiance which is what you need to do in the early game. Money is a nice thing to have but in the early game it isnt what you need the most, what you need the most up until level 9 or so is the experiance and to keep leveling, around level 8 you should have some powerful skills at your disposal, obviously this could be dependant on what hero you have.

Early game there are types of hero's that thrive here and that would be Nukers, these are mostly the intelligence heros (some that come to mind would be lich - lina - zeus). They tend to get weaker as the game goes on from what i can say from my experiance.

Agility hero's are the ones that bide there time and should try and level up and stay out of trouble, the problem with them is early game they have hardly any hit point and always will throughout the game not have much hit point unless you get some hit point boosting items. Agility heros are the ones that can become extremely powerful mid to late game.

Strength hero's, these early game can generally go in and kill creeps to get cash, they may generally always have a small nuke/stun which is what makes these guys very useful, i consider these quite good teamplay characters to get because they act like tanks and have a stun usually.

So to summerize.

Agility Heros - Weak and Vunerable early game, but VERY Powerful late game.
Strength Heros - Generally good through the game, Item Dependant to become Great Hero' Killers
Intelligence Heros - GREAT Early game hero's become weaker as the late game comes into play.

One important thing really i find to keep you in the game is to make sure you keep within a level of the highest level'd player on the map on either team and you should still be useful. If you feel that you can't do it on the lane that you decided to go down, and feel as though your getting harassed far to much that it will effect your leveling than say something to your team and try and swap with someone else. If your getting by okay but want to earn abit of cash i would recommend neutral creep farming from time to time to earn abit of cash and solo experiance.

Dont go Chasing other people PAST Towers in the early game, and generally you don't want to do this to much either unless you have backup available to you and you know you can survive even if another hero may pop up.. be cautious ;) and try not to get yourself killed.

Now this is a thread ive started off and would like the experianced dota players to add, and i will also update this first thread, its just something i wanted to start off for the new players!

Nice post :)

Another topic to look at for newer players is Joey's post half way down the page here (http://forums.multiplay.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34572). It's a few versions old so doesn't have all of the heroes, but if you're playing an all pick game you might wanna take a look!

Another thing to add is that buying a chicken is VERY useful (especially in -em games!), the ability to stay in lane while the chicken brings you potions is definitely worth it, going in and out of lane early in game can mean you fall behind.

It's 38 lives total in Deathmatch. 34 is considered to be the point of loss though as from that point onwards, one of your team has no hero.
