Does anyone know any local Cable companies in Aberdeen? As NTL dont cover that area and I refuse to go ADSL.

Cheers!

FFS! If I had the option of ADSL I'd yank the arm off the person selling it to me! I can't get ADSL in my area and there is no cable proposed for the foreseeable future.

Some people are just Knobs !! :D

If i had an option of broadband over a normal connection, then i would jump at it, no matter whether it was cable or ADSL.

Just stop being a pleb, and go with ADSL

Jase.. dont you live down near pompy ?

You can get ADSL of the cosham exchange (i`ll be geting it soon), i dunno about anywhere else down here.

Before you guys go ****ing nuts, this aint for me. I have a sturdy ISDN and it's fine for the price I pay.

My brother (just moved from London to Aberdeen) had NTL Cable and a lot of people agreed with him that Cable was better than ADSL. The reasons for this, I dont get as whenever he rattles on about it, i get bored.

Now, the one thing that i do agree with him about is the ****eness of our good friends at BT. That would be the people he would have to turn to.

Also, seen as he went out and got a Cable modem, i think its a bit stupid to go and change to ADSL. Now, for all you people out there who have parents or large wages to turn to and get whatever the hell they want, its easy to change.

If you wanna argue more, the e-mail address is in the signiture ;)

BT is NOT the only company you can get ADSL from. I know for a fact that ZENDSL and Claranet do it in the UK as my adad is looking at getting it. This of course is a moot point as these companies buy ADSL from BT, but of course, you are supported by the company u are paying so its not all bad ;)

RP: While reading that, i was gonna say. You buy the "service" from the ISP but the ADSL line is still supplied by BT.

But, you dont get the crappy BT ISP problems.

Demon also do it as well, and a load of others..

if you go to the BT website and search for adsl they have a list of all current ADSL providers and links to their websites (sorry no linkage)

Turns out there is a Cable company in Aberdeen. Nice of you guys to help me out :P :)

From what I understand about these things (and it is little so be prepared to correct me) is that ADSL gives 512K downstream and 128K (or something) up. Unlike Cable who gives u 512K both ways.

Whenever someone tries to explain it to me, i get bored.

Well, I don't know what cable gives you up/downstream, but I believe it varies, and also believe you have alot less upstream bandwidth than downstream.

It makes sense, wherever you are 'connected' to the internet eventually (e.g. 7000 households on a ring, all connected via one router...) there will be a massive disparity in used bandwidth into and out of the router - probably alot *MORE* than the 4:1 ratio of bandwidth aDSL has, as more people will use 100% of their downstream 512k, than will use 128k of their upstream 128k.
Most customers are happy with this arrangement, which leaves the ISP providing the bandwidth with approximately (totalBandwidthToCustomers * 0.75) free bandwidth to sell to businesses for server farms - at no cost to themselves beyond rackspace and lectrickery.

Despite increasing profits, this also helps to keep home DSL prices down.

Finding a synchronous (even amounts up/down) line is exceptionally hard. Despite the fact it's possible to supply synchronous 2.3Mb/s over the same copper as aDSL, and with almost identical equipment, you will find the charges for this service have a mild disparity with those of the home version.

example :

'home' aDSL - 128k up, 2Mb down = £250 / month
'home' sDSL - 2.3Mb up, 2.3Mb down = £3000 / month

The logic is obvious - those with higher bandwidth requirements, especially those with requirements for outoing bandwidth probably use alot of it for services, 24/7 - this costs the ISP alot more than 20 Joe Shmoes who only use it for a few hours a day.

Pain in the arse, but true ;(

at the moment from what i'm aware ASDL gives 512k down and 256k up

Cable from Telewest and NTL gives 512k down and 128k up (or 64/64 for the budget NTL option)

I have aDSL, and conveniently mentioned 128k up for it in my above post, this is not correct. aDSL offers 256k up.

jase

im in rowner/brdgemary, and im just over the limit for the connection.
this is the same excuse that BT used when i was having HH installed a couple of years ago, hence i had to go for ISDN2e, which the installation costs infinately more :(

BT to me, are just a bunch of cowboys, trying to milk as much money out of its captive customers, trying to repay that £60 billion debt that it has run up.

/me hopes that they will fold,

Tom

Well, as I said, I know very little about these things. I would just plug it in and hope that it worked.

When he finally gets online, i will get him on here and he can explain the reasons behind his thinking and then you can argue with my brother for a while :)

Ok linkage...

ADSL providers... (http://www.broadband.bt.com/common_questions/content3.html)

I`m going for the "elite" option :D because you get quite a few goodies with it like free domain name, and 1 month free.

This all depends on weather the line test passes tho..
