Was outside in the garden eating dinner on the garden table and then i look to my side and what do a see but a massive 8cm beetle!!

Its called a stag beetle and is britains largest beetle. Ive got it in a jar now so might sell it on ebay :P

Anyone ever seen one of these or worse yet been bitten by one?

Well i put it back in the garden again but right at the end so hopefully it crawls out of my garden and somewhere else.

 It kept playing dead but once I put it outside again it started moving :roller:

I released I cant sell it since its a protected creature under UK law which sucks. Thats the only reason I released it :P

Its an awesome beetle but i dont think it can badly bite you. Would love to find one here but i fear our cats would try to eat/kill it.

These rule, we get them a lot around here. They live in and feed off dead/rotting wood. Very cool and it wouldn't do you any damage :) They use their massive jaws to wrestle with other male beetles, they can actually lift another beetle in their jaws!

Doh! I should have kept mine in the jar and then looked for another and made them wrestle. Now that would be cool.

Use to see quite a few Stag Beetle when I was kid and lived out in the country, but they've declined in numbers over the years. Cool looking beasts though

Something I just found..

Japan has something of an obsession with large insects and a popular pastime for many elementary schoolchildren in Japan is collecting stag beetles in the forest and making them “fight” each other — which was the inspiration behind Pokemon.

Also I noticed some pretty cool ads on some of the tube escalators. Samsung (or was it motorola?) were using an image of a stag beetle holding a phone aloft in its jaws. Can't find this image on the net unfortunately but keep a look out for the ad if you're in London soon :>

Yeah your not joking! There were two flying around yesterday in the garden. I nearly had another heart attack. Next time I find one its going back in the jam jar so I can save them and get two. Then there are going to be put in the same jar for a fight. ;-) Bets can be placed online ehehehe!
