View Full Version : BT messed up IP Max

It sounds like it is official. BT have messed up the rollout of IPMax ADSL to the whole UK.According to http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/19/bt_max/

"One industry source explained that while the new 8 meg speed is set on the customers' line, the corresponding connection is not made on BT's core network. As a result, punters checking their setting can see that they should be on the higher speed, but in reality are getting 2 meg tops."That is exactly what I have been seeing. My router is reporting a line sync speed of 8128/440 and yet I get 2Mbit on speed tests 9 times out of 10. The only time I have got higher speeds is in the middle of the night.

The question is, what is BT doing to fix the problem, and will the ISPs have to do anything to implement the fix?

You expect people to act all pleased if they've paid for up to 8mb but aren't getting anything better than a standard (and far cheaper!) 2mb connection?

sounds exactly like my line was then. Upgraded to max, had a shed load of problems. Downgraded to a Limited "Max" service, (1mbps) and its suddenly all good :/

This is a known issue with BT's side of things if anyone on our DSL service has this issue please let us known and we will get a fault raised on the line.
Note: DSL Max may not give 8Mb/s at all points during the day so please only raise this if its happening at all times.

unless you lived next door to the exchange you were stupid thinking you would get permenant 8mb .. copper in the network has been there for so long its untrue. phone calls and data .. down 2mm thick copper cable...

BT are doing something but you cant just change out a whole network over night.

During the first week of training (remember training is 10 days) you will be stuck at 2Mb, this is perfectly normal.

There's a glitch at the moment where what's known as the BRAS profile can get stuck after training. This is where the fault lies.

BT look set to apply a blanket fix in the next week or so, as K says. Ironically, it appears all the people that commented on that news article haven't actually read their mail - but then The Register is the Sun of the IT World, so not the most reliable thing.

There are also other factors at play now. You WILL be hitting contention now (at your exchange). Consequently that will effect your speed during peak times.

So meh... my BRAS finally updated, i'm getting the speed of 4.5Mb, with my line synched at 5.5Mb (because the profile updates a few days after the training realises it can hit it).

My router has said 2mb for the last 13 days (since I was told I had been upgraded to "up to 8mb")
My internet has been really crap all the way since then, today I refound the speed tests website here are some of the stupid results I got
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

Speed Test Results
Downstream 282.0 Kbps ( = 0.3 Mbps )
Upstream 240.1 Kbps ( = 0.2 Mbps )

Then I got 1700kbs at http://www.speedtest.ndo.com/
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

Communications 1.5 megabits per second
Storage 188.7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 5.4 seconds
Subjective rating Great
1600kbs at http://www.giganews.com/test_connect.html
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/speedtest.php

1.81 Mbps
which is around 231.41 KB/s
including overheads
Your connection is performing very poorly (25% efficiency) for an 8 Mbps service

I looked on the wanadoo website to see if I could downgrade back to the 2mb service, but they only offer up to 8mb now.

Do you think I should call them tomorow and ask if they can stick me back on 2mb? because that worked fine. now I can't even play cs ;-;

Most of the major ISPs will not revert you to Home2000, they are putting everyone on IP MAX.

That said, after 10 days, you shouldn't still be on 2Mb, i'd call them.

Router sez:

Upstream Speed: 448 kbps Downstream Speed: 5056 kbps
ADSL Guide sez:

Downstream 3,808.1 Kbps ( = 3.7 Mbps ) Upstream 375.9 Kbps ( = 0.4 Mbps )
Roughly right. I've had 400kps downloads out of it too, so it seems BT/Zen got it right for me. It has randomly dropped out, but it's literally a case of the router reconnecting and off it goes. Only really affects IRC!

My router ALWAYS syncs at 8Mbps and the best sustained speed I've had was 4.5Mbps-5.0Mbps for 30mins in the middle of one night. My typical speed tests are in the 2.0Mbps-2.5Mbps range.Router says...
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 8,128

ADSLguide.org.uk says...
Downstream 3,187.9 Kbps ( = 3.1 Mbps )
Upstream 375.8 Kbps ( = 0.4 Mbps )

AuditMyPC.com says...
Downstream 3107 Kbps
Upstream 401 Kbps

Speakeasy.net says...
Download Speed: 3368 kbps (421 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 344 kbps (43 KB/sec transfer rate)

Average of the three tests...
Downstream 3221 Kbps
Upstream 374 Kbps
All tests done ibetween 20:45 - 20:50 on Sunday 21 May.
These speeds are better than usual, but still lower than I'd have expected given my line measurements and distance from the exchange.
I'm also completely out of the training period as well. :)

If you are training at 8128 and are getting downloads of <5.5 Mbps using the bt speed checker (not any of the online ones, as the bt speed test account bypasses any BT Central contention, etc.) then BT view that as a fault and will do something.

To do a BT speed test, change your router login username to speedtest@speedtest_domain with a blank password and connect. You won't be able to access the net, but you will be able to access the BT Speed test pages on one of the following addresses:

http://217.35.209.142
http://217.32.105.42

You'll then go through the BT speed tester dialogue.

Please conduct this test twice, about 20 mins apart. The results are logged so when we raise the fault, BT can view them.

This seems to sum up what's going on:

I reckon I have a sticky BRAS data rate.

Dunno what BT are upto but this training period seems to be difference from when i was with AOL on a 8mbdown/400kup.

Now on Multiplay 8mbdown/8kup. I was activated/migrated on the 17th and with only a day or two to go my speeds are still stuck at 2mb down. When i did the training last time for the AOL connection the speed slowly started to increase after 3 or 4 days. Think it was in roughly in steps of 500-1000 a day, ending up at just over 5mb by the end of the training.

I just did a BT Speed Test with details above and i'm getting 1933Kbps from the first ip addy and just over 1300Kbps from the second...

I have also got a Zen Max line on training at another property (same city, different exchange) it was activated on the 18th and it is also stuck at 2mb. (8mbdown/440kup)

Has BT changed how long they keep you at 2mb? My reouter has only reported one line drop and that was 56 hours ago.. (just rebooted the router just now)

Hopefully i won't be stuck at this speed after the training period

Hmm.. the buggers. I just re-tested the multiplay line.. 4mb lol
Still it seems BT has changed something as it never used to take this long.

When you migrate, your line restarts the training process. Good huh? :)

Which means you get stuck at 2Mb for about a week before it bumps up.

I migrated on the 19th , also had my upload changed from 400 to 800 , howver, i think i can safetly say no restart of the training period. roughly 1 training period per day , thats about it..same speeds, still as stable...well, as stable as ipmax generally...interleaving still on though, 3 days after request to switch off, still i suppose they are busy after evolutions collapse...strange though, i asked F2S to switch off interleave over 3 weeks ago, never happened then either ??
