just a statement, although that Oppy 170 is a good clocker, you can buy a brand new one for £293 from overclockers and £275 from Scan. It's only hit 3GHz on Phase change. 1.5V through it. Most peoples PWM's would go boom if you tried to hit that. The CPU-Z screenie doesn't have any explanation with it, and it looks likely to be a suicide shot tbh.

Trying to sell it at a new price is not going to work. Even myself who like's clocking my chips, I'd rather hedge my bets with a brand new processor than pay the same amount for a used chip. I'd reccomend dropping that price otherwise it's doubtful whether anyone will be interested on here.

Just a bit of reccomendation, but I will say that Opteron 170's are nice chips :)

Mr Footlong
4th June 2006, 19:28
Erm, I think I may have to give it a miss then I am afraid :( I can't afford to gamble sadly. Cheers for the replies though.

rapty
4th June 2006, 19:41
I don't think you understand about Overclocking Phase Change does not put stress on the chip's Transistors they can move alot better under - Temperatures, the Used chip is Pre Tested if you can get Scan or Overclockers to pre pick you a stepping and try the Overclock out before you purchase buy a chip from them Hell I'll even stock up on 50 While I'm at it to!

I Have been through every stepping their is with Dual Core/Single Core Opteron's I am a chip Junky I can't get enough of them, the PWM Area you refer to explodeing at 3000 clocks is err slightly exagereted to say the least, even with 1.5 Volts on air at those speeds it would not happen, as you know and I they get warmer than Single Core Chips and sometimes need a fan if the correct Case Fans are not present. The CPU Z shot is of how far I pushed the CPU with 1.5 Volts as you may know Voltage can go up to 1.7 for suicide shots on Phase as the CPU is 100% better protected than any other Cooling if you can find another Opteron 170 that can Bench at 3330 at 1.5 by all meens show me!

Mr Footlong
4th June 2006, 19:45
I was going to say 1.5 under phase is pretty darn tame really and in the safe zone easily for phase imo, just to back Rapty up. (I have 3 years of phase change cooling under my belt, so not just a muppet saying that).

rapty
4th June 2006, 19:50
On Air 2700 at Stock Volts not a bad chip by any meens :)

bright_
4th June 2006, 20:06
refering to your post r.e. stress on your chips in minus temps, that is wrong, Your cooling them down, thus making them more brittle, your putting extra stress on the cpu. If you bring them back up to temperature too quickly, you will break it because of the varying temperatures.

If you cool them down you are also increasing the volicity of the cpu.

Also you have the fact that if this CPU has been clocked, you dont have any kind of idea what the CPU condition is. Im not saying its bad or anything, But i am saying it could be.

- Igloo / Bright / lots of input

rapty
4th June 2006, 20:14
Can you please stop Crapping in my thread please you don't have a clue what I know about Chips & waisting your time, theirs a great site called Xtreme Systems go and post their I'm sure they will put you in the right direction

Mr Footlong
4th June 2006, 20:16
most phasxe change setups are hermetically sealed and the cpu takes a fair old while to return from - temps to room ones in that environment in my experience. With Prometieas at least, no idea about Vapochills. Anyway, not getting involved in this anymore lol. Chances are from an electromigration point of view at least, the cpu will be unaltered if always running at that voltage under phase imo.

Right, just fyi guys, after a lot of discussion tonight and my large amount of sales feedback, Rapty has OFFERED to send me the screen first to make sure I am happy before I pay a penny of the price agreed, so he is taking a risk and not me. All I am doing is providing a proof of address/ID of my choosing.

Taking a gamble with such a large amount of money is not an easy thing to do so cut the guy some slack imho ;). People like Gunsmith on here know me and have met me 'in the flesh' so to speak on more than one occasion. He knows that I don't lie :).

I've purhcased a case, motherboard, processer & heatsink from Rapty... All have turned up as described, well packaged and fairly quickly too.

Have only been able to test briefly as the PSU I got (from a local computer fair, dirt cheap..) has since blown up!

5th June 2006, 15:21
You are more likely to buy a new computer before a chip breaks from overclocking. All you people saying that overclocking reduces the life of CPUs is correct, but you are missing the point entirely.

You get more future proofing - Chip stays high spec for longer as in a 4Ghz > 3Ghz for example.
You get more bang for buck! Not understand? Read the article on Toms hardware about getting a £80 CPU up to 4Ghz ;)
You have a bigger e-penis.

3 perfectly good reasons to overclock imo!
If treated right, the oc'ed chip will last a nice long time. I wouldn't worry at all about buying a cpu thats been oc'ed before.

At least they honered the early buying price of £705 inc vat by the look of it on your order? :). They have been bumping and bumping the price like you wouldn't believe (no surprise for those numpties at Overclockers....).

Gunsmith
5th June 2006, 19:50
yeah I noticed the jump as well, i'd have gone ape**** at them if they didnt, good thing that the warrenty on the unit is with Dell themselves, no more dealing with OCUK again ;)

rapty
6th June 2006, 10:46
Always seem's to me that you have to loose your rag with Overclockers UK before they take notice and your treated in the appropriate manner, I've spent around the good part of 5 Grand with them the last year and I still get treated like something which has evolved from the Garden Pond Two days ago although their is a guy their called Scott which seems to be one of the only ones out of the young rabble which is a problem solver, as Mr Footlong said they did honour their early price which is Supprising as they have been in trouble before on Watchdog for dodgy dealings with before and after prices of components
