View Full Version : Thinking of migrating to MultiplayDSL...

Ello, I'm currently with Freedom2Surf but in the last few months they have gone a bit downhill. However, I have a couple of questions about MDSL before I make a decision:
1. How long has multiplay been offering broadband? (Also asked in another thread but yet to be answered)
2. Does the connection come with newsserver access?
3. It is free to migrate yes?
4. I read that MDSL are an L2TP clinet of Enta, what exactly does that mean?
5. On all other ISP's my possible connection is listed as "Up to 5.5Mb", yet on MDSL it is said to be 2Mb, what would be my actual speed?
Thanks :)

1. Well I moved over to MDSL September 2005, and it was running for quite a few months before that.
2. Currently there is no newsserver access, but really these days if you want decent newsserver access you are best off paying for it with a company providing that service.
3. I believe migration is free, assuming you are not changing what type of adsl you are on at the same time!
4. Yes. In real terms it is not important. If you go to MDSL , MDSL are you ISP.
5. Assuming you are looking at ADSL MAX, well to be honest, you get what you get, and you really wont know for sure until you get it installed. It could be that you are on 2mb ADSL at the moment, and MDSL checker looks sees that and says that is what you can have, whereas other ISP's checkers are telling you what you could have on ADSL MAX. Note: ADSL MAX is not the same as ADSL.

***Shameless copy & paste alert!! ***
Multiplay as a company has been around for many years. We run the largest LAN Party events in the UK (over 1000 at the last event). We are also the largest gaming network in europe and operate as our own ISP. We have our own network infrastructure which powers not only the ADSL platform but also sees over 10,000 simultaneous gamers per night playing on our game servers.
ADSL is one of the latest major developments and we have been providing services to users since late July 2005.
The Multiplay ADSL service has been designed for low latency high performance broadband, ideally suited towards online gamers. ISPs that have started introducing traffic shaping and other network trickery have ended up seriously degrading service levels for gamers simply by creating additional latency on the connection, making games playing impossible in many cases. Multiplay can provide a viable alternative ISP for gaming and for users who want the additional performance on their internet connections. :)

We don't provide our own news servers, but you are free to use any 3rd party newsgroup feeds available. :)

Yes, migration from another ISP with a valid MAC code is free.

That just relates to how your connection gets from your BT Line to our network. We receive your traffic over L2TP and then introduce it directly onto our own network. It has no real bearing on the service you receive (you won't see anything you wouldn't see on any other ISP on your end for example).

Where are you seeing the 2Mb figure? If you mean the availability checker, it should be saying you can either purchase the standard 512k / 1Mb / 2Mb packages, OR an IP MAX service. You can get an estimated IP MAX speed from the BT availability checker here (http://www.bt.com/broadband).
Hope this helps to answer your questions. :)

OK, with ADSL it is 2Mbps, with ADSL MAX its 5.5Mbps up to 8Mbps. I also asked if anyone had any experience with MDSL on adslguide, not sure what to make of the responses, perhaps you could give a response? (mainly on the post by shizzledizzle)

Also, what are the pricing options for IP MAX?

Not sure who shizzledizzle is or where he's getting his information from, but Multiplay have most certainly never 'operated on a shoestring'. The investment made in Multiplay Online has been massive and if we weren't doing it right, I don't think we'd be hosting over 1000 games servers, over 10,000 players per night, have our own in-house developed industry leading server control (http://clanservers.multiplay.co.uk/aboutclanforge.php) and management software and our very own network infrastructure (http://www.ripe.net/whois?form_type=simple&full_query_string=&searchtext=as35028). :)
The Multiplay LAN events have been growing in popularity, with our last event (http://www.multiplay.co.uk/i27/) being our biggest ever, with over 1000 gamers with their PCs turning up at Newbury Racecourse for 4 days. Again, I don't think you can pull off that kind of stuff without taking it seriously. :)
The ADSL platform is well established and we have no intention of letting the service degrade. Catering for the gamer market, we'd have no customers left if the service didn't perform well. Moreover, as the ADSL platform feeds into our main network, if we were oversubscribing our network itself then several thousand gamers would certainly start shouting pretty quick!
Feel free to take a look around these forums and see what other people have to say - and don't forget it's only a 1 month contract and it's free to migrate in. :)
Hope this has gone some way to aleviate your concerns!

Same here. Just awaiting for AOL's mac code to come through just now.
There will always be some idiot trying to down a service, for all we know this could be a competitior or a friend of the said person that had personal issues with him. Maybe he is genuine but from what i can see is very much trying to make it personal.
Multiplays Clan server service on it's own is a good enough business model., let alone a decent DSL service. I am a bit concerned that alot of peeps will jump ship but as mentioned they do have the power to stop more joining up.
I know of two friends who are on AOL and Nildram respectivley who are also awaiting thier mac code to move here!
There are loads of people taking bigger ill advised risks with other isps that are claiming to be "free" with the huge contracts ie 18 months... ur pretty scr*wed there if it doesn't live up to expectations. I think poeople shoud be shouting about that more than this..
As for Multiplay DSL it's a 1 month contract so try and if it's crap so be it, but i doubt i'll be dissapointed!!
See you's in a about a week!

thinking about moving from plusnet to mpuk, but the price difference between the two packages when max is provisioned is a little too much for someone without a job!!

I still find that shockingly slow. When I migrated to MPUK about 6-7 months ago from BT Openworld, I got my MAC in about 5 minutes over the phone. I can't understand why ISPs make users jump through hoops. The user clearly intends to leave them, so they may as well get it over with ASAP.
