View Full Version : Max DSL - syncing at one speed/downloading at another

Is anyone else having this 'problem'?

I'm currently syncing with the DSLAM at 5248Kbps, although this often drops to around 4500kbps.

However, I can never download any faster than about 1500Kbps.

I've been on the service for a few months now, so it shouldn't be a training issue.

I'm a bit peeved as althought the service is good - I'm not happy at being unable to get speeds closer to the 5Mbps mark.

The virtual path status at my exchange is green, so there 'shouldn't' be any local contention issues.

I've tried all the usual tricks to try and boost the speed, but I'm now convinced that I'm being rate limited somwhere - although whether that is by BT or by Multiplay - I'm not too sure.

Would appreciate if someone could pick this up, as I'm probably going to end up migrating to someone else just to see what happens with another MAX DSL provider.

I have to say I'm also noticing a difference between sync speed and actual speed.
Sync speed is 8128 / 448.
Auditmypc.com says 1958 / 382
ADSLguide says 1998 / 405

Maximum download speed seems to be about 250-260KB/sec which isn't much better than the 2Mbit line I had before Max.
I've tried plugging the router directly into the master socket of the BT box and that seems to give me about 3500-4000 kbps download, but with the layout of my house, it doesn't work well for me.

Much like tbl, is there anything else we can do to improve the situation?

I would expect this could be the issue your having most likely :)

Complete guess though, not official or owt.

We're chasing these issues up. You're aren't the first to notice them.

Any idea on a timescale? It's been going on for a few months, so if I knew there was a resolution round the corner - I'd be happy to sit tight.

Okay, I've got an update.
ADSLguide speed test (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp) = 2294Kbps / 375Kbps
AuditMyPC.com speed test (http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp) = 5333Kbps / 296Kbps

Strange results, but at least they're staying above 2Mbps.
What I find is that my burst speed is fantastic with 4-5MBps easily, but the sustained transfer tails off to about 2Mbps quickly.

In reply to rick_2k, it does sound like the telephone extension may not be as good as it could be so I'm going to move my router right by my main linebox and lay a length of cat5 to a switch in the room with the PC's. Let's see if that changes the results for the better.

I'm the same as Zenith

ADSLg test : 1062.8Kbps / 376.9Kbps
AuditmyPC : 3484Kbps / 397.3Kbps

If AuditmyPC does indeed use the highest burst speed, this makes sense - I presume the RAMBO training does a similar thing.

My main concern is that at certain times I *CAN* get around 2.5Mbps from my line on downloads, but it's very scarce.
