I hate Dodgy PC repair people.

2003 I built a machine for my Uncle (Who lives a good 3 hr drive away)
2004 I do some basic maintenance on it and install some more Ram.
2005 because I didn’t go with the family to see them over the summer they get some local IT call out guy to install a HDD. Fine.

2005 Xmas I go over with the family. I get there. Boot up the system. Something’s wrong. Its booting really slow. I just assumed it was full of spyware and crap. So fine. Clean out what’s there. Trim the programs that don’t need to be there. Ok. Anyway, A few weeks later I get a call saying the monitor doesn’t come on and it’s not booting.
Ok

As my other uncle who lives near by is coming down here anyway he picks up the tower and drops it off here. So I hook it up. No post. No beep. Open the case. Its been 3 years. But I know roughly what it looks like. Anyway. Something’s wrong (and the GFX has shorted out) so fine. Yank the card and try a spare. Nothing….. try a PCI slot card. Fine that works. Anyway. Its meant to have 1 gig of ram.
Which it does……
I built a machine with a Ti 4200… 512 of DDR 2700 (iirc, upgraded to a gig in 2004)
Anyway. I find 1 gig of SD 100mhz.. a burnt out Geforce 3 (incident with a loose screw)…. And a completely different Mobo… same CPU. So in windows everything still showed up the same. Cpu and ram wise….and you wouldn’t know about the GFX unless you went looking.
Im really pissed off. I mean really, its ARG!!!! BASTARDS!

Ages ago I had exactly the same thing happen to a friend.., he bought a pc with a 1Gb drive.. (yeah it was a while ago) and the HD died after about a month, so he took the pc back to where he bought it from..

When it comes back its really slow.. I was there (watching startrek as it happens on his couch) whilst he is fiddling with his newly returned pc.. hmm whats this he says.. click click.. pc hangs..

He reboots and calls me over, I take a peak, missing OS..

What did you do I ask?

I found a drive called H and I formatted it !!!

To those that dont know, the dodgy shop has taken out his 1gb hard drive and put in a 450Mb drive and used disk compression on it to make it look like he had a 1Gb drive... he went back to complain but couldn't see them as the police were escorting the owners from the shop for selling stolen pc parts...

I work in a small computer buiness shop repairing computers and the amount of people we have in which our 50 above roughly and have had a highly professinal IT technian called to there home to fix any computer "software" problem, only whatever problem they have had, happened after the technian has so called finished the pc and gone from the premises. The usual fault with the computer is slow booting like switch said or blue screens of death, looking into this when we have one we normal discover that the memory they had in there is a different stick and size, also leaving things disconnected like front usbs. On 2 occasions wev prompted the customer to take action and they have which has ended in not being able to find the person they had because of changed mobile number , fake address.

This is more common than expected and is always done to the older generation. Personally it makes me sick as people fought 4 our country and this is how people treat this country and its occupants. Excuse the spelling and there shud be more to clamp down on this sort of thing.

Thing is, whilst yes this is all very bad, can you prove what was in there? If you build the computer yourself, can you actually prove that it contained what it was meant to? That could be a contentious issue in the end.

I've heard of this happening a lot. The trouble is, any idiot can set up shop doing stuff with computers, whilst a lot of other industries are highly regulated, with trade bodies behind them. Most of these little computer companies don't care about such things - they want to ship cheap crap fast.

Thats true about needing to prove what was in there to begin with, but if you do make a complaint to the police, then they should keep a record of the place... and I'm guessing that if they get enough complaints they should look into their accounts with incomings and outgoings etc. Surely they should have to keep a record of what hardware they buy for stock purposes?

Also in Hereford there is a computer company called Magenta, my parents bought a pc off them back in 96, its ok, has windows 95 on it, back then i didnt know too much about computers but i knew that 95 was supposed to have solitaire and stuff on it, but it didnt. Later on we take it to another pc repair place because the motherboard dies, and he pulls the hard drive out. And is astonished... says its completely old, and not what we paid for at all. (me being young at the time i didnt know the spec of the computer or anything, but yeh the bastards put a ****ty old hdd in that packed up about a year later!)

But then again we all now what bastards the police are! ****tards who set people up.

Actually I would have thought this was more for trading standards, who in turn would look into it and try and build a case for the police...

The police will act if enough evidence is given to them, but in the case of a suspicious business then surely its down to trading standards to build a case against them, before handing that to the police?

There used to be a firm called RAM Computers shops based in Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford and Fartown. The worlds dodgiest pc dealers ever every item u ever bought would have been opened and in many many cases have been used (like HDs with existing instalations), when I once queried this issue I was removed from the shop and the doors were locked on me.

Though the Huddersfield shop is no longer there I here they still trade in leeds. So if u ever see a firm Called RAM Computers or RAM System stay clear from them, full of lies and deceipt
