View Full Version : Proposed Date - 17-19 Feb

Well it would appear the only date we could get the Stratford Racecourse Venue for a specific WoWLAN is 17th-19th Feb. This is the weekend directly after StratLAN 26 at the same venue. It would start at 6pm on the Friday 17th and run until 6pm on Sunday 19th with 94 places.
Whilst this could potentially cause problems with people not going to both WoWLAN and StratLAN, I'm thinking that the appeal for WoWLAN will be to a different group of people as well as a particular subset within regular StratLAN attendance, who may well be prepared to go the distance :).
So... poll away. I'll give a few days of poll and if the response is good enough I'll go ahead and book and get signups live.
Cost is likely to be in the region of £50. It's slightly more expensive than a normal 2-day stratlan as we'll have to cover the cost of potentialy 3 additional BT lines and ADSL (i'm currently working on 1 ADSL line per 25 people but await full testing of 40-man RAIDs with multiple people sharing a conn).

i can only speak personally, but i think a longer period of notice before the lan would make for a better event. as i see it, if you have the lan in little over a month, you will be pushed to get significant turnout from any guild that isn't in the 'MPUK circle' already, and it'll be just another lan. not that this is a bad thing, but if i was to go to a wowlan, i'd expect it to be a bit different.
it depends what you want wowlan to be, but if you want guilds that are spread far and wide to attend, it may be a bit soon. what about the june i-series replacement?

Too close to StratLAN imo.

Too close together for me to do both. And even though WoW is all I play at home, I'd choose to go to StratLAN.

^^^^^
What they said - make it sometime like late june after the unis are finished and the kiddies are still at school doing exams ;)
Plus more time to generate hype about it!

THis is the sort of feedback I was looking for. As I said in my original post I was concerned about it being the weekend after StratLAN, but it's difficult to get dates at that venue.
I'll find out about some June dates as well. Until then... keep the poll and votes coming. I'd still like to see if the initial LAN in feb would be viable, if only as another test of the connectivity required with a larger number of people but not the full venue.

tbh i would need a charecter high enough and on the same server.

i think the insta-guild idea is a good one
so we can spend some of the time all starting chars from the same level on the same server with hand-picked class/races
Not for the whole LAN - the lvl 60's can go raid and stuff still but it would be a good idea to get everyone involved

tbh the insta-guild doesnt sound as interesting or appealing as i first thought.
in theory it would be the same as what im currently doing. going thru low levels now with a hunter alt. which im finding a real drudge... apart from sitting with a whole load of other people doing it.
i think that in practice the majority of the people who are already in a guild thats in attendance will raid with high level characters. with a few other folk left to level up and play on there own.
in conclusion, i could end up just leveling up a few characters from scratch (which i could easily do at home with my guild) and pay £50+food+petrol for the priv of.
is it me or is there no real benefit in attending a lan dedicated to playing MMO's? unless your in a guild already that will be there wiht high levels of attendance?

Another thought, if the LAN takes place at a later date what about the expansion?
A whole new guild of Blood Elves running rampage starting from scratch could be fun...... and as someone suggested could be a WoWlan only char :)

Yeah, the low levels aren't great for grouping - XW used to have an alt night where we all played together, levelled at a simalar rate etc. With just 10 of us we had to rule out doing any kind of quest with non-guarenteed drops, as they took forever to get everyone the items. Kill quests ended up in a mass wait for spawns.
Alt night ended very quickly once we'd all got to level 60 and could group doing something that was meant to be done in a group.
Having said that, instances / high level quests were great fun, as we did them at the lowest level possible(to get the quests etc) to make them hard. The funniest thing was when the horde showed up to gank low level players - we found out its' quite possible to take down a level 40 with 10 level 20 players :).
IMO, I wouldn't goto a lan where the main focus was starting from scratch. Things that do work well for lans are instance runs and raids, both of which would be difficult to do many of with low level characters. Instances don't start till about level 16/17 which would probably take the first day out from doing any.
If it does happen, one fun thing to try is high end instance runs with character swaps. We had great fun trying to do a (at the time quite challenging) run through scholo with people playing on others characters. Most people aren't entirely aware of how other characters play, so its good to spread knowledge fo that too. Just watch out for the repair bills if you lend a heavy armour wearer a cloth mage :).

well, seeing as any lan will have some notice period, how about everyone that signs up agrees to start an alt on a low-med population server with the aim of getting it to lvl20 or so. then you can set up a 50:50 alliance:horde split, and a spread of classes/races for PvP, with a (ideal case) 90+ attendance you can do world raids, and you would be too low to raid any dungeons, but grouping is easy

good idea. then atleast we would have a sensible starting point. i guess then we could see who managed to "buff" the hell out of there character for the LAN!

There will be entire servers populated only with blood Elves when the expansion comes out... I guarantee it.

Sounds interesting, February's a bit early I think, June would be good, most of us uni/college people will have finished exams, but all the young twats on WoW will still be at school ;)
In some ways I think starting frmo scratch would be kinda fun, in others I think not so.
And I think some people here are underestimating teh fun of playing WoW in teh same room as guildies :p And PVPing with people in teh same room would be great, shouting at real people > shouting at your monitor ;)

Given the response and comments so far, I'm letting these dates go and am looking at dates in May-June for this event. As soon as I get some dates, we'll go ahead and get signups open.
This will hopefully give people plenty of notice and ensure we have a cracking inaugural WoW-specific LAN :)
Please do keep the comments and suggestions coming in other threads in this forum. I'm closing this one as the dates are no longer valid.
