I decided after hearing so much about WC3 and seeing it played at LANS everywhere. that i purchased it on budget today along with the expansion pack.
can someone please point me towards all the popular mods that are played at i-series etc.
ive heard of "tower?" or something "defense" like that.
Any tips on who i should start out etc.. i did read the tips section but none of it made any sense..yet...

#mpukdota is a good place to start with DOTA.
Tower Defence is an archetpye, there are about a hundred different ones, all very similar play style...

At Stratlan we played golumn tag (run away from the golums!), Protect the Guy, tower defense, Skibi and others. Remember you dont actually need to get the mods first, connect to battlenet, connect to a game, the map (with mod code included) is automatically downloaded.
Ok some people might complain, or kick you if you start to download, but the majority arent too fussed about it. (It takes seconds and the only reason they complain is becuase they think your new and will wreck the game).

The great thing about playing at a lan is that you can download the map almost instantly. Playing on battlenet it's often advised to get the map before you join the game, if not then don't take it personally if you get kicked from a game (We won't kick you from an mpuk game if we know you, but if the download is going slowly then we may suggest getting it from the website).
Bookmark www.dota-allstars.com as the new maps and changelogs are posted there, however you'll find that more often than not the site is being hammered or is down :p

dota is definitely *F*T*W* :D
Although I also quite liked starship troopers (where you have to defend against squads of giant bugs or something)
