View Full Version : timeless popularity...

What games do you think have/will always be popular?

so far i've seen that cs, cs:s, DotA and WoW have been popular for a long time... very popular... what others are there?

also please say how popular these games are... like counterstrike is many peoples lives, but DotA seems to be just a little bit of LAN fun (although i'm not entirely sure)

replace "LAN fun" with "Chronic Anal Disease"

never actually played DotA myself...

i may seem to ask peoples opinions on games... but i want a lot of new games, and i have very little to base my choices on, so i've decided to give 'lan popularity' high priority...

Dota is popular at lans with a group of about 10-15 or so of us. It's merely a casual thing although saying that, we played our first clanbase cup match this week and won 2-0 ;)

Joint ops normally gets a look in at lans.. as does ut2k4 (neotokyo mod), bf2 and bf1942 (altho not so sure on the latter these days)

thinking about getting BF2...

also planning to get halflife2/cs:s, looked on amazon and its suprisingly expensive... i thought the price would come down since its been out for a while.

also decided i must get guild wars...

just bought ut2k4 and the first thing someone said was 'that game is dead. no one plays it anymore' but oh well... i'll get people to play it \o/

UT2k4 is not dead. Neotokyo and Alien Swarm are still popular, and minigun instagib ctf is good fun for a few minutes ;-P

Further, crate wars is excellent as is carball.

are we forgetting the golden oldies?

How about the dooms, the quakes, the wolfensteins, the marios?

Quake is eternal - its the fallback lan game since you can start with just 2 people and then others can join in later.

BF series is great, but not so good for lans because you need a big game for it to be really fun

FAO: UberMonkey
I 've seen the HL2 pack, standard AND collectors edition, for £19.99 online (Gameplay.co.uk was one of the places), and CS Source for £24.99 individually (same sites)

But like with GuildWars, there's a new version of the game out, incorperating recent patches etc, to which they've slapped a higher price sticker on

UT:GOTY is also a classic

EDIT:
www.Xfire.com (you those you dont know, it's a messager program designer for gamers, records all your gametime etc) lists the following as popular games, most i've seen on there for a while... but pick the older ones and you have some of your list

Just have to say, renegade SUCKS.

Wasnt it developing Renegade..and then the complete lack of sales that made Westwood go bankrupt?
Renegade killed Westwood!!

Personally it doesn't matter what I play, I always end up going back to HL2DM. It never gets boring for me! Grav grenades, orb jumps, car throwing, and of course pwning noobs!!:D

Cillit_BANG!

If I'm getting pwned on BF2 I go on there to make myself feel better.

Red Alert 2 FTW.

BY the way, we CAN get it working on a LAN, no problems, we can also get it working over the net with no issues - nice 3 player game a couple of weeks ago :)

Not really, I'd think that a lot of people will stay with q3 as q4 costs a lot to buy atm. When the price comes down a bit i'll move to that.

Also a good number of Q3 players don't like Q4 for one reason or another.

And there's not really timeless popularity as such in any game. People may still like older games, but very few actually play them regularily, and you cannot say which current games will last the longest, for obvious reasons.

lol, did you know that i26 was the first event that had more CS:S players than 1.6?

UberMonkey
27th November 2005, 01:58
true, but cs was number one... and there were how many years till cs:s came out?

quake is up to number 4... and since i havent really played any games, as far as i see, Quake 2 has been made obsolete by Q3...
wanted to make sure Q4 wouldnt do the same to Q3 before buying it... :D

Been going for so many years now. Yes most are on UT2k4 but as long as there's an Instagib they'll always be UT :D
