Dollands and their Computer Eyes thing is really good. Compare all the specs on a screen and whittle them down.
I've gone through about 8 pairs to get one I liked, and it turned out they were identical to my former frames...
There's style 'guides' for frames, different shapes for different faces.

Id give contacts at least a try, there not as hard as its made out to be to put them in, Ive been wearing them for over 4 years now :)
When i first started needing glasses i just used to carry them around with me, untill needed but it just gets silly after a while ;/

No. Really!
I started wearing glasses at 13 for short-sightedness and even though I don't have to wear them all the time, I do have to wear them for driving, so I don't bother taking them off.
The thing about having a small face is a fair enough comment, but I find that almost all glasses styles are for smaller faces these days. I have trouble getting glasses which look right because I have a large face. Small frames just look ridiculous on me. You shouldn't have any problems getting a pair that suit you well. Bad-Co had a good suggestion with frameless glasses because they don't impact on your appearance that much.
And Kil88... your comment about contact lenses is not helpful. I have actual PAIN whenever anything so much as TOUCHES my eyes. I've tried contact lenses and you wouldn't get me to wear them if they were the only option left to me in the world.
Finally I wouldn't recommend laser surgery unless you have a really extreme prescription (more than +/- 4 diopters) and your prescription hasn't really changed for 3-4 years. It is irreversible.

I don't think any optician worth his or her salt would recommend contacts to somebody who has never even worn glasses. They tend to prefer glasses to start with.
As for laser surgery, its not permanant, and the complications are rediculous, so big no there.
Just get the glasses - personally I think glasses make people look distinguished. And women wearing them have that 'dirty secretary' look we all love so :D
Or maybe that's just me.

Try glasses WeeJ
Go for rimless ones that blend in more with the face, lots of sizes and shapes around.
Get a decent lens with an anti reflection coating, so they dont 'shine' out at everyone around, and you will be fine.
As with everything you pay for, cheap usually is crap, but shop around, have a look, and be comfortable with the place you buy them from.
Avoid contacts just yet, you will need a backup pair of glasses anyway to be able to get them. So glasses first.
Dont even think about refractive surgery until 21 or your prescription is stable for 4 years at least.
Hope this helps.

Meh, I look crap in glasses but I hate the idea of shoving stuff in my eyes (know a couple of people who've had bad experiences...) so I just wear glasses *shrugs* tbh, I think you get used ot the way you look in them, at first it was weird, but you get used to it quite quickly :)
That's a point...really need to get another appointment..not been in over a year I don;t think XD

Being told you need glasses does suck, i remember the devestation at 11 of being told i was blind as a bat. I opted for the smallest, ovalest (is that a word) glasses available and i've stuck with them for 9 years.
I wore glasses all the way through school, and it wasnt until i was 18 and started going out and making friends (yes, i started late) that i developed an intense hatred for my specs, and decided to completly fu*k them off and try contacts.
It was a big step, because i hated things going near my eyes too. I couldnt even wear mascara for years because i couldnt get my eyes to stay open long enough...so contacts seemed like the most random decision ever.
But i went to my opticians and said i wanted to try, and i was sat in this room for 2 hours, trying to get this thing in my eye and the moment it finally went in, that was it, id cracked it. I was chuffed.
I think the suggestion of rimless specs is a good one weej, you should try them out and see what you think. You just have to realise specs arent the end of the world :)

I'm short sighted, not too badly but I have glasses (or at least had until I lost them a long time ago) and as everyone else has said, it's no biggy once you get used to them, I got so used to wearing them that it felt seriously weird not wearing them, kinda like wearing a watch for ages and then having your wrist feel bizarre if you take it off or going out without your phone/keys in your pocket etc.
Also they make you look more intelligent
And 'dirty secretary' look - omg yes!

I've been badly short-sighted since I was 10, tried contacts for a while when I was 17 and again in my mid 20's...I discovered an amazing thing though...I actually prefer seeing glasses on my face than without...maybe I've just got used to them over the last 20 years...

its true, you do get used to wearing glasses, I prefer them tbh.
I wear rimless lightweigh specs, and also have contacts. I find that when I using a computer with contacts my eyes will be sore after a while - so just use the contacts when i go out and about :)

Ive been wearing glasses for 16 years, but it doesnt stop me from thinking about lasik all the time and what it would be like to have peripheral vision (im -7.5 btw, so cant see **** without glasses)

-1.75 in each eye here and i have contacts. Daily disposable ones, they are really good. The only advice id give is make sure you have a backup pair of glasses, incase your eyes get sore/irritated and you dont want to put contacts in.

i've had glasses for almost 2 years now... didnt wear them at first (still dont wear them 24/7... dont need them for most things)
at first i felt uncomfortable wearing them, because people were used to me not wearing them, and naturally comment that i'm wearing them... (bastards) at the start of college (all new people) i started wearing them more often.

no friends... all those computer-monitor rules... follow them -.-
i had 20/20 when i was about 12... a few years of 30+ hours in front a monitor per week... without following the rules... now my eyesight is far from perfect (still dont really need my glasses for normal life, but i can notice a slight difference from when i first got my glasses (mostly when looking at lights far away)
when i dont wear my glasses... the light looks kinda like... hmmm.. an asterik * instead of a . when i first got my glasses, i noticed that lights turned back into . s and now they are slightly asteriky :P
rules are things like... look at something far away every so often... a quick google gave me this, not sure if this is quite what i wanted, cant be bothered reading through it all, a quick look shows its the same general idea though

Yeah, computer abuse has definitely not helped my eyesight, though I was probably going to get problems sooner or later anyway as ALL my mum's side of the family has had eye problems *shrugs*

my eyes got progressively worse as I got taller and have stayed the same now for about 3 years, considering my level of computer abuse I should be blind about now

I've worn glasses all throughout my childhood as I've always been badly short-sighted, and only recently (even into my 20's) have my eyes settled a bit. I'm around -11, -12 which is about on the limit for the level that laser surgery on.
I've worn contacts since age of 13/14 (coming up to 10 years now), and no regrets. I wear the gas permeable hard ones too.
Though lately I must say i do like the 'glasses' look. As you seem only a little short sighted, your lenses will be thin anyway, whereas mine were always around 3-4mm thick and made my eyes look tiny :)
Don't knock contacts til you try em though :) Moving from glasses to contacts was the best thing I did.

thou i wanna try these monthly ones which u leave in all the time n jus get a new pair in the post at the start of the month save me farting about jabbing myself in the eye while im pissed trying to get em out ;)

were any of u terrified of putting them in the first time? my eyesight is ok without glasses (no idea what - i am) so i expect they would be quite thin if i did get some...
i'm terrified i'd manage to cut my eye or something XD

I first was awarded some glasses when I got to level 33 and the gold required. First time I put them on, it was as if the world had changed.
I'm mildy short sighted, so used for driving and long cinema/presentation based events.
So if at night you drive and find that all the cars seem to be on full beam, time to go see the Eye personage.

this just reminded me i have been meaning to get me an eye test.
Im not sure if its just im generally hungover or drunk, but my focusing ability on what id call medium-long distance stuff (mainly notice it on letters) in an fps, also what other person said about the lights looking like a star...id swear that has allways happened to me and i have had 20/20 vision (well maybe not now) i thought it was just called the light being too bright....also i spose some of my vision **** could be put down to the fact that i any amount of light above about 60watt (even the white on webpages glares at my eyes, and yes i have my brightness down) hurts me to look at, i believe this is because my room is kinda black, with a 60watt bulb for the main light, and basically the light levels in my rom im used to you, go outside and im in constant pain if its sunny, or in abright house :(

Just for everyones use (everyone with glasses anyway) if your short sightedness is strong (i.e. your prescription is c. -5 or above) rimless glasses come out huge because they have to reinforce the glass/plastic.
Course, if your sub the -5 level get em :)

I'd personally be ok with people having rimless up to about a -8.00.
Use the thinnest type of lenses and a decent optician, and you'll be fine.

I love specs! When I had a test and was told it might be a good idea for stuff like driving etc I couldn't wait.
It helps that glasses somewhat suit my image so it wasn't so much a problem for me.
Shop around! At the risk of sounding like a ponce, don't rule out designer glasses. You might pay a little more than you want but there are a lot of creative styles out there.
Personally I went for some by Alain Mikli. They look good and the name is descretely placed on the inside of one of the arms so you don't look like a ponce.

I knoe for a fact rimless at over -6 means the glass/plastic involved has to be massively increased ir they just break. You can get them on lower levels but they will be larger than you expect. It's not undoable but worth thinking about.

my fiance has glasses and she's about your size weej. i guess anyway. she had ones with some v thin rims then recently got some rimless ones. they look much better on her. And there a slight pink tint to the metal so they blend quite well.

I have the problem of being long-sighted. Don't really mind wearing glasses since i've had to for the past 6 or 7 years.
But i do hate the frames i have just now which makes me not wear them. I was dumb enought o let someone i thought i could trust pick them for me as i had to run off somewhere that day.
The frames suck ****. New frames FTW!

You lot have all got me wrong...I've never been worried about wearing glasses...in fact I know that once I'd found the sort that suited me, they'd look quite good. I was only after advice regarding what style I should go for...
I went with two pair of rectanglur type frames in the end. Took alot of mooching about to find them being as I've got small face, but they suit me.
