View Full Version : Power of the mind - real?

Is it possible to use your mind for "extra-sensory" purposes or supernatural means?

I think we all posess some abilty that would be classed as "paranormal" without even realising it. Furthermore I think these abilites arent paranormal or supernatural - they can probably be explained by science in some way that we are not aware of yet.

I'm always thinking of something 5 or 6 seconds before somebody else says it, or thinking about somebody a few seconds before they walk into a room - silly little things like that.

One example that happend just this Saturday was when I was at an exhibition and Chad Smith from the chilli peppers was doing like a solo drum set. At one point he asked the crowd which chilli peppers song we wanted him to play along to. As people started shouting out names of chilli peppers songs I considered shouting out "Yellow Submarine" for a laugh. I resisted since I was right at the back anyway.

About 10 seconds later someone at the front shouted out "Yellow Submarine" and Chad Smith said "Yellow Submarine???"

Now consider the number of songs that I could have chosen from. There's loads - hundreds of thousands. Why is it that someone in a crowd of about 500 people said exactly what I had thought?

I can only think of a few possible explanations.

Firstly it could be that there's some link between Chad Smith and Yellow Submarine or the Beatles that I have seen at some point but dont consciously remember. Perhaps Chilli Peppers.. Sgt Peppers.. Beatles... Yellow Submarine...

That's still pretty incredible for two people to think that though

Secondly it could be pure 100% coincidence. Just because the chance of it happening is small, doesnt mean it can't happen.

Thirdly it could be some sort of extra sensory awareness that neither myself or the guy at the front knew of.

Thing is this sort of thing happens a lot with me - at least one tiny example a week I would say - does this prove that I'm telepathic?

I'm very aware of the fact that they may not be as coincidental as it first appears - the number of opportunities I have which I don't have any sort of premonition outweigh the times when it does happen by a long way.

I'm also aware that mathematically it might be more unusal not to have these sorts of things happen. I mean if coincidences never happened, that would be a bit odd, right?

On the other hand there's something there that tells me perhaps we CAN do a lot more than we realise - I mean, why not?

Our brains are immensly powerful - what we know about them is very little. There's no telling just what sort of things it's capable of - just because science isnt at the point of understanding yet, doesnt mean it can't happen.

So I was wondering what everyone else thinks - I'm still pretty undecided but I wanted to see just how many people had stuff like this happen to them, whether they thought it was ESP etc

Discuss. :)

well, i'm always a complete total non believer regarding this sort of thing

but i went through a period where i would think of someone say, for the first time in 6 months an dthen they would contact me out of the blue like two, three hours later.. and this happened ever so often ove rthe course of a month or so

i really believed something was going on there.. it was some time ago so i dont remember too many more examples

but because it was so long ago, i just think it was coincidence now, but i remember thinking it odd at the time, and giving more than a few minutes thought to it being more than coincidence..

but then with the above examples you have to wonder what its all about - because its another person contacting you, its not like the power of your mind would be able to control others is it. thats just silly. but maybe the thinking two things at once works there.

I'm always thinking of something 5 or 6 seconds before somebody else says it

that one could be put down to bein in the same circumstance that would lead one to think of such a thing, but ... oh i dont know!

i dont like to believe that there could be something like that going on :X :)

A few times I've had such strong deja vu I've said outloud to the person or persons in the room what will happen next, and it's happened. Or that thing where the phone rings and sometimes you feel strongly you know who it will be before you even pick it up ( no not caller ID :p: ), or even just before it rings.

Oh man weird stuff like this always happens to me.

Like the other day, I was thinking about the first track on a Chaz and Dave CD of mine and singing it in my head, like you do.

And then, when I put on the CD, THE ONE THAT WAS IN MY HEAD JUST STARTED PLAYING!

Dad said it was just a coincidence, but there's no way.

One thing that really span me out the other day was;

I was walking along a main road with leading onto a highstreet, before the high street though there was a turning to the left in front of me...

I was walking towards it and thought; "I bet a there is a car going to turn into this junction" i couldn't hear anything as i had headphones on, i carried on walking then thought, i bet i'll get hit by a car if i don't look.

I got to the edge of the pavement, stopped and a 5 series beamer ripped around the corner in front of me!

That was weird... thinking about a car that might hit me, then if i had actually carried on walking i would of been hit probably...

This thread reminds me of that film "the butterfly effect" Ashton Kutcher is a total ****wit but that film was great, a real mind screw.
I do think stuff like that is possible.

I have a little phrase I use at times like that.

GOMHB*

the usual culprits of this are WK and myself, however this may well be because we tend to think along the same lines, even so it yields some interesting "to the second" observstions and comments.

We dont call it "The Force", just an unusually long distance brain-to-brain wifi connection. Wet Towels and tin hats seem to stop it :)

*If you can decipher it, GOMHB!

i had something like that last summer. Id just got back from my first year of uni (in durham) and the day after i went to see my friend in oxford whos birthday it was. For no reason whatsoever as we were walking down the highstreet the thought 'i wonder if anyone from my college at uni lives in oxford wouldnt it be weird if i saw them'

literally no more 5 seconds later a girl from my college walked straight past me from within the crowd (so theres no way i coud have seen her)

ive had maybe 3 or 4 other incidents like that that have started to make me wonder if there really is something we dont know about that our brains can do. I dont mean little things like finish other peoples sentences but quite large striking things that just stand out to you

well me and my girlfriend just had a really big fight and her m8s have told me she's really upset and cant stop crying etc.
now i dont want to sound big headed here but all day ive been worried incase she tried to take her life (not that anyone would over me:D). then she phoned me at about 7 o clock crying her eyes out and told me her best friend had taken an overdose and is in hospital being monitored:|

I was really shocked at this, then about 5 mins later it made me think how wierd it was that i'd been worrying about her doing the same thing. So i wasnt spot on, but i was almost there:confused:

I had something like this yesterday driving back from work, but then again i beleive in God, which could explain it :)

I was driving home, it was a bit wet, and i was tired, and wanted to get home fast. So that's what i tried to do

Stright onto the main road i was doing around 80mph, coming up to a fairly sharp bend, but i thought i could take it, so i kept on going.

Then i stoped speeding up, put my brakes on and slowed right down around the bend, and just round the corner (which i couldn't see round) there was a car stopped in the middle of a road to let another car turn into it's drive, i applied my brakes more firmly and came to a controled stop just behind them, much faster and i would have hit them at quite some speed!

I'm one of the "Some can, some can't" folks. While I do agree that the possibility of higher mental activity exists, I don't believe everyone can utilise it (consciously or not). Every activity in the world is the same, some can & some can't. I don't believe this is any different.

I'm not saying any of the theories about this are false, I just don't think everyone can experience it

I don't think people do, tbh Derren Brown has shown how much you can do with just the power of suggestion to a person, so I tend to figure when you and someone else say the same thing it's just coincidence, or you've gone through the same thought patterns to get there. I quite often think something, then a friend says it, or the other way round, it's just because it was an obvious thing to say usually...or, as I said, there was some suggestion somewhere that you both picked up on

The start of this is obtuse, so bear with me.

Many years ago me and my mates found a battered old electric bass in one of their lofts. We brutalised it, rewired it, plugged it in and starting playing. Their neighbour came around and complained - not for the noise, but for the fact that our futile attempts at bass-riffery AND our loud profanities were being broadcast on FM and interrupting their listening pleasure. Naturally we thought this was well cool, so we moved to a different house to repeat the experiment and it did not work. ("Guess you only get one chance in life to play a song that goes like...")

Anyroad, the point behind this is that your head is a container for a squishy mass of electrical and magneticy stuff, so it's perfectly plausible for some of this info to leak out or even be broadcast in a way you had not intended, and be received by another head or perhaps even an FM receiver.

My advice is to build a faraday cage, stay in your home, and violently assault any amateur radio enthusiast you may happen to meet.

Saw a thing a tv a few years back, basically said that alot of things like thinking about some one before the walk into the room, or thinking your being watched only to find out that you were,
could be a throw back of the area of the brain around the hypothalamus,
a part which was almost our entrie brain before we evolved,
the therory was: maybe your hypothalamus still functions like the brain of an animal, sensing danger, freinds, the meat pie two rooms away, but it is mainly ignored by your conscious toughts, but every so oftan we pick up the little nudge and we think ohhh "oooh i'd like a meat pie" only to find theres one two rooms away.

GET THIS:

This morning at work, I was slacking as usual in ze office and observing the rest of the office as usual.

I noticed one or two of the lights were flickering a bit, but all the others were fine.

Then I began to imagine...what would it look like in here if we had a major blackout? Would we have red emergency lights than flip down and make the place look like a scene out of Resident Evil? Would everybody scream and soil themselves?

BANG

All lights go out, major fire several miles away in junk yard, burns through power cables and plunges Bournemouth into darkness, day off for me and I aer teh psychic winn0r.

"We" might not know alot about them, but plenty of other members of the human race know plenty about them.

Ultimately, not a single, repeatable experiment has been carried out under scientific conditions to indicate *ANY* kind of ESP/telepathy etc. despite the attempts of tens of thousands of people, and money OFF THE SCALE (Russians and USA in the middle of last century) attempting to do so.

This to me is proof enough that such abilities don't exist *but* assuming for a second that they *DID* exist, it's still proof enough that they are so random and so rare that are utterly irrelevent in every day life anyway.

Well it does happen, recently for me was travelling through New Zealand. Driving thro' NZ radio coverage is patchy at best, anyways we were driving for a "radio blackspot" when I started to sing (totally out of tune) "its a long long road, from which there is no return".. Anyways, a few seconds into the song, the radio cut back in with exactly the same song playing at almost exactly the same place in the song.
As for knowning what someone is going to say next, or what is going to happen next I think our brains just "forward process" information. I find that with Soap opera's (corination street, eastenders) i can pretty much guess what is going to be said next becuase it has been said before many many times!
Telephone calls is another thing, certain people will call at certain times of the day or at certain intervals. You might be able to guess who is calling simply becuase your brain has worked out its been 2 weeks since bob phoned, and bob always phones every two weeks.

I think our brain blinds us to all the information it is recieving and processing. Occasionally you might tap into this information and that causes the "dejavu" effect or ESP effect.

I'm forever having DJV's and the phone thing. Can't be cos my brains learnt people call when they do cos we hardly get phone calls (e-mails better lol)

Yes i believe the human minds capabilities are far beyond what we can imagine right now.
