What is DOTA?
DotA is a mod for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. The game is played as a 5v5 match, however you only (really) control one unit. The AI generates waves of creeps which selflessly and relentlessly charge up the 3 lanes towards the enemy base, it's your job to push those creeps forward and destroy the base at the other end. Of course, this is complicated by the fact that the 5 players on the other team are trying to do the same thing but in the other direction...

Is it any good?
Yes, I think so. It's a bit of a marmite game (love it or hate it) and it has a steep learning curve before it really becomes enjoyable. At StratLANs we've instituted newbie training programs and a handicap system whereby the best players have to start the game with a random hero and no money. There's regular games happening online and we're usually on teamspeak when we're playing so you can hear the guidance.

And will it be played to death at StratLan? (e.g. should I learn how to play it?)
There may be some DotA at StratLAN... I strongly recommend that if you don't already have WC3 and expansion that you order them asap. They're on the budget titles list now so you shouldn't pay more than £7.50 for each. Note: Reign of Chaos (the original) is effectively useless without The Frozen Throne much like Starcraft is useless without Brood War
