Hi,
I know that you see all these cancer things all the time, but as one of my friend's mum just died of cancer about 6 months ago, I feel that this is probably one of the best ways of looking for a cure and participants.
It is a little program which uses your SPARE cpu space to calculate a tiny section of a molecule which theses people are working on. It would take hundreds of years to do on one single computer, so by all of us doing it, mayby we can make a difference.
You can still play games and stuff cause it uses your spare CPU space and takes up NO net bandwidth untill it updates to the server (once every 24 hours and only a couple of K/bytes)
Please help
We can make a difference...

Just read it to find out more and then click on Download on the left about 1/2 way down..
Thanks....

hi
i've already moved from Seti to this.
My aunt died of thyroid cancer (about 2 years ago), and my mum had breast cancer (about 12 years ago), so i always support Cancer charities when i can.
With luck it wil help out, more help than Seti I expect.

Thanks a lot for the support Wizzo and werewolf.
By the way - back on a gaming note - this morning, on the big breakfast was none other than SUJOY playing a 12 year old at Quake 3. Any guesses who won? Well the kiddie got all the games they played (which I cannot remember). Just thought you would like to know...

Have already fired up a team for us "Multiplay UK" (surprisingly) :D, and begun migrating across some of my processors in the server farm here. The annoying thing is the UD client doesn't support multithreading or SMP architecture, meaning it only runs on one processor. Easily solved with dual systems tho... just set the processor affinity for the UD client to the 2nd processor and Dnet to the 1st processor... and hack away at both contests to your hearts content.
Time to get advertising this... I'm sure we could get a huge team... will include in the next newsletter that goes out.

id wait until linux client is up, you can always emulate the client to do SMP support, (not stricktly smp but you get same results)
Im moving across to multiplay team now, I was on register.co.uk team but they are lame ;o),
Its my view distributed.net is pointless anyway, its just showing how strong that encryption is, heh, Goverment agenceies have the algorithms hardcoded onto supercomputers anyway and can crack most stuff within 2hours, plus PGP isnt exactly secure since openpgp was found to have a major bug in it, its always quicker to hack it than crack it.
I bet i 0wnage cancer before everyone else,
tis a serious subject though, who gives a feck about aliens and rc5, i signed up for this as soon as it came out,

I wouldn't want anyone else to go through anything like that, and its great that we can start to work towards finding a cure for this terrible thing. I think it is great that everyone can make a real difference.

Yes Monk it is the same little card as yours. Only difference between us is i have completed one unit and you haven't (even tho it doesn't show up in my stats yet)
it might just be that when i sent results back, my net connection was running real smooth. yours might go up when you send your results in.
About the dually thing, i don't think it is possible to use both processors with it yet. When the Linux version comes out, they say it aill have some SMP support tho

You lot should have realised that the Network speed is between YOU and the UD server.
So the ideal machine is plugged into the same 10/100 switch as the UD server, but you are on the end of a modem !
Your lan card has F**k all to do with it. Unless you use a router like me, but then the speed is still throttled by the wan device (modem, isdn, dsl), so stop being silly ! :D
As for the 1Gb thing, its how much you have allocated to the UD agent. You specify this in your device manager on the UD website (https://members.ud.com/services/devices/devices.htm)... its how much disc space is reserved for potential storage.. somthing to do with distributed backups or sommint, but its nothing to do with the cancer research thing.
and Cabe, i`ll be farming this as soon as the "Desk of Doom" is complete :D

One of my machines (BOF's but he is listed as himself on there) has been going for 122 hours on it's first block. It's a Celery 433 but my K6 350 has submitted like 3 blocks in the same time. It's on a very 3d molecule right now and has been all day... so I guess it very much depends on the complexity of the molecule and the interactions.

11th April 2001, 17:27
The program only saves when the percentage completed changes. That only changes at the end of a molecule, that means if you get a "Molecule From Hell" as they call it, you just have to leave it running till it completes it, or lose all the work since the last save
They say they are working on the long molecule problem, so at some point you shouldn't get any MFH's any more
Cabe
13th April 2001, 22:25
I tell ya, ive never seen a DistComp problem like this, the first 5% took 8:30, im now on 9:12 at 89% i mean how does this thing work that out?
Phiebs
13th April 2001, 23:40
Cabe - In response to the 8:30 thing only 5% - I think it analyses the parts of the moloecule, so if one part is WAY more complicated then obviously it will take longer? Not sure about this, just my thought.
Plus - you can restart your box and it will carry on - done it many a time? Never had a problem with that?

Scarr
14th April 2001, 08:34
I think the main thing with it taking a long time to do a few percent sometimes it this
The program only updates the percentage counter when it finishes a particular molecule. This means, if you get what they call a "Malecule From Hell" of MFH, it might take literally hours to work it out, but have done the work equivalent of 80% of a unit.
Phiebs
14th April 2001, 09:41
I kind of get your drift - guess I havn't had any MFH's then! Well I am really p1ssed off now...Cannot goto SL5 because it is BANG in the middle of my exams (thx Jay) and I cannot goto i8 for all the days because I am on f00king holiday till saturday, so sunday mayby if I am lucky? Cabe get some reading skills!
You try 100 molecules and there is 100%. Yes that is 1% for 1 Molecule!
So if you're molecule is taking 12 hours it will still only go up 1%!

Scarr
17th April 2001, 21:38
D0c, the reason it suddenly shot to 77% from 56% is because (as i've said before) the percentage is only updated at the end of a molecule. If the molecule you were processing was equivalent to 21% (is my maths right?) of the unit then it will jump from 56% to 77% at the end of that molecule.
Phiebs
17th April 2001, 22:58

WhiteKnight
18th April 2001, 00:44
Erm..
Scarr: There is no way for the computer to know how much processing is involved in each molecue until its processed it.. so how can it determine how many % the remaining molecules will use ?? A: it doesnt...
You get 100 molecules per batch (1.8mb worth). each molecule = 1%
Molecule number 56 in you batch was a MFH and thus took ages.
Molecules 57 to 76 were non-starters (completely not gonna fit.) so it skipped em or they were very simple.
Number 77 was a bit more complicated so it stalled there for a bit so this is why you noticed it.
Simple.. No maths or anything involved.. read the website it helps.
