<p>Tournaments will be running throughout the event with the pro tournaments, thanks to big name sponsors, boasting substantial cash prizes aswell as holidays, hardware and software given away for other tournaments - everyone has a chance of winning something. Upon arrival there is a welcome party at Jacks Nightclub, so you can break a few of those new years resolutions nice and early and get them out of the way!</p>
<p>The Computer Gaming Championships are going to attract some of the best professionals around - from pro gamers to the games companies themselves. The Xtreme PC Show is running simultaneously with the event and so Scores of exhibitors will be present and giving talks and showcases throughout the event - its almost at the point where three days simply isnt enough to fit it all in!</p>

Here comes the flood of But-lans jokes, Multiplay .... putting the 'i' in Butlins! :)
Sounds like an interesting event, accomodation costs are very reasonable. Sounds tempting for those cold January LANless weekends. Will the staff have recovered from StaffLAN by then? ;)

hmm, this is VERY interesting for the overseas gamers like myself, lugging your stuff a thousand miles or more is a pita but when a bed and a comfy bar are included with security in easy walking, its a bit of a done deal.
Now to see if I can get the wife to ok it and cover me in the shop.. hmm.. me runs off to check on plane flights and stuff..

Yes they start at £99 for LAN entry AND room - I believe you can pay more for different types of rooms.
We'll be keeping you updated of course with more details as the weeks go by :)

I tried to get a quote out of their website from the link on the same page for two adults and got
Sorry, but we could not find any available accommodation to fit your party for a 3 night break at Bognor Regis on 5th January 2006. and a list of alternatives ... strange ... maybe they haven't entered the details into their system yet?
edit: I thought that it might be you have to order a room full, but because of the event 'U' rating I can't book a room with 4 adults either. :(

Butlins are handling all the bookings for the event so if there are any problems do lets us know so that we can pass on the information that their system isnt working.
edit: forget that it's not working - don't e-mail in just yet!
we'll see if we can get them to sort it out!

This looks mighty tempting. Hopefully it will take off.
I could see this becoming the UK equivalent of the CPL events (by means of location and other things going on at the same time).
As much as I love Newbury, there isn't really that much for those without a PC.
1 of these events a year, plus 3 i-events looks good for big lans.

I have a few issues with this...
a, You cant have a multi-single-sex room boking, IE an all female/male clan may find it difficult to get a shared room.
b, There doesnt seem to be a Spectator option.
c, How are the staff going to check 1250 badges to make sure everyone sat there after 11pm is a £99'er?
d, Its the "first" butlan, and so most people will be either of the opinion "I will wait and see who signs up" OR "I will see how this one goes, and then go the next one" so either way, I have little confidence in there being alot of people there, other than the usual MPUK crew.
Beanieboy
6th October 2005, 13:27
Yes you can have a multisex room booking and we already have bookings being taken from other sources including PC Gamer Mag and Custom PC Mag.
Spectator option includes accommodation and is priced at £59, £69 or £79 depending upon the level of accomm that you require. There is also a seperate option for booking your gaming ticket which is priced at £49 ie £59 accomm plus £40 gaming = £99 etc etc
Yes the bars are defo open 24 hours and also we are currently checking out the online bookings area to make sure that there are no further bugs and that online bookings are made as simple as poss....In case you have any probs there is a phone number to call but you MUST let them know that you booked via Multiplay. 0870 242 0870

To achieve a friendly family atmosphere, Butlins will not normally accept bookings on our family 'U' category breaks from all male or all female adult parties:
of 4 or more whose members are aged predominantly 16 to 21
of 8 or more whose members are predominantly aged under 30

I don't think this will apply for the event, since it says it is closed to the public, only those taking part in the lan will be staying.
So I reckon you would be okay with a group of 4 same sex people sharing the same room.
Beanieboy
6th October 2005, 13:43
Absolutely right
I've just got off of the phone to the web dept at Butlins and they tell me that this is just routine procedure, you will find that you are able to continue the booking procedure without any probs.

booking system is going to turn lots of people off this event. basically its crap and too much hassle.
for example.
i tried to book 1 person with accomodation and was told no accodation available...???
why cant this be as easy as Iseries? answer... its not organised by MPUK...
LozB
6th October 2005, 13:57
for example..
booking for 10 people self catering
brochure price = £790
gaming pass x10 = £400
total = £1190
how does that equate to £99 a person????
i dont have much faith in this being a popular lan? as the booking system is crap..
Beanieboy
6th October 2005, 14:01
Yes bugs indeed. Will let you all know when sorted........
LozB
6th October 2005, 14:01
recalculated and took the cheapest accomodation
this then worked out £99 per person.
but the system stated that theres only 6 units left for the cheaper accomodation..
so i think the £99 isnt gonna last..
Beanieboy
6th October 2005, 14:09
You calculated at the most expensive gold accommodation at £79 plus gaming passes. If you follow the procedure correctly you will find that it all works fine. There are no hidden costs. There is plenty of accommodation available as we accommodate upto 4,000 people every week.
Multiplay are working together with us here at Butlins to put on what we hope will be a great event and they will be doing everything that you would normally expect from an i series event.
Elbonio
6th October 2005, 14:19
It's basically marrying our expertise at LAN's with Butlins expertise at hosting and entertaining - it's a winner imo
and if you ask me £99 for accomodation AND game pass is dirt cheap for what you're getting
I'm sure you'll have the bugs ironed out soon and we'll be bringing everyone here at Multiplay more coverage of this as events unfold over the coming months, so watch this space!

Theres just one important question that hasn't been dealt with yet.
Will Wizzo get to be a redcoat?
LozB
6th October 2005, 14:36
anyway im not going to argue about what was booked etc... no point it will get moderated...
my point was to show the difficulties of the system...
i wasnt slating the event at all. im sure it will be a thriving success given the community support from MPUK...
IMHO its a bit too late for potential punters to expose the faults with your booking system when the event is launched and you are taking bookings? do u not agree...
LozB
6th October 2005, 14:41
ive read the booking conditions... how do u book in for 1 person?
Ryvita
6th October 2005, 15:37
Hmm, still weighing options on this one. The concept of 24 hour opening bars is an appealling one, I have to admit. It's just the cost of finding a new liver afterwards... :)
Good to see some prompt and seemingly informed and empowered help coming from Mr. Beanieboy. Keep it up sir, would be good to see this event succeed.
Any consideration been made for the various non-PC LAN activities, like DDR, M:TG, Poker, ProjectorGames and drinking games - Werewolves, Yeeha etc.?
Booking system: Set iron to cotton/wool setting and max. steam. Wrinkles removed...
Edit; One other thing. Looking at your webpages there's no mention of Multiplay's involvement there.
Given that Multiplay have run the largest LANs in the country so far it might give readers a bit of reassurance that the network will be up to scratch to see something along the lines of "network and network services provided by Multiplay, number 1 LAN organiser in the UK" plus a link to MPUK site.
If that's there and I've just missed it, ignore me. :)
Ryv
LozB
6th October 2005, 15:43
good points ryv...
i suppose the other events that dont require specialist equipment i.e. can be played anywhere that has spare tables in the bar probably could occur (as they do at iSeries LANs). DDR might be more trickier. crossing appendages that the MPUK DDR kit might come along :)
i for one think thats what makes the iSeries so appealing is the wealth of other activities to do when u need a break from your screen..

Well im tempted, my main thing being the usual, which shockingly hasnt been addressed here.
Can we camp?
Are bar prices reduced? (as an ex bourne leisure employee i know that you make all your money on food and drink, most beers being about £3)
Can we game all night? as in right through?
What sort of security is implimented on such a large site?
Its these issues that matter i think. The things that people will have to deal with on a day to day basis.
Plus has anyone else noticed that all the dates vary amongst pages ? Some say Fri-Sun, some Thurs-Sun.
To attract a gaming crowd you will have to ensure that your online information is accurate, and as people pointed out previously if it isnt you will instantly lose customers.
Its a tempting lan, but frankly it being at Butlins is dissuading me more than anything. No, not even your new hotel can make me go :)
I will watch to see what happens with this.

- Prize funds. How much? Which games recieve the prize funds? How are you structuring your tournaments? How many staff are allocated to your tournaments? How many days do your tournaments run over.
- Prices. How much is food? What places are available to eat at? What times do they close? Do you serve bacon butties? Alcohol prices?
- Entertainment. Red coats dancing? Raffles? Wubster in costume?
Please answer as many as the above! :D:D:D

* Can we leave the site or are we prisoned there..??
* Is there a shop that does "sticks of rock" with your name in it ??
* Are the local shop windows Bi-Focal to help the aged ?
* Do we have to roll up our trousers and put hankies on our heads ?
* As an invading force to the south coast, do we have to goto tesco's and buy ALL the milk and bread ?
* Will there be members of butlins staff dressed and childrens TV characters to punch and kick as stress relief ?
* Is the donkey derby being held the same week ?
* Is the swimming pool open to gamers, if so can we take our PC's with us ?

2 steps away from booking, have another lad interested in coming with me, I have asked someone to work these days in the shop, if they say yes and can actually commit to these dates then within a day or two i will be booking.. RAR!!
Only downside is, the 5th of Jan is Xmas day here in Spain, sure 25th of Dec is the real Xmas day, but as everyone here is 99% catholic they dont actually get their presents until the 5th of Jan, shops usually busy 5th 6th 7th...

What's this about no accomodation units free? Are all the rooms booked already ?
Beanieboy

Morning Campers......
Gonna try and answer some of those important questions.......
BOOKINGS.
It would be very helpful if when booking the least expensive self catering accommodation you book for at least three people sharing in any one apartment. The £59 accom cost has been discounted heavily so that accom and gaming can be kept under £100 ie accom £59 gaming £40 = £99 total. This means that we are required to have three or four people per accom wherever possible. There is plenty of room in the units and they all have either 1 double and 2 single beds or four singles.
For any of you wishing to book for 1 or 2 people or if you are having any booking problems at all, you should give us a call on 01243 870994 and we'll sort you out.
The Accomodation units are not fully booked as we are able to accommodate over 4,000 people per break/event so, again, if you have a prob CALL US:D
SPECTATORS
If you dont want to play but wish to spectate then the daily cost is £7.50 payable at the main gate on the day or by calling us and paying over the phone
DAY PLAY
If you dont want to stay but do want to play then the cost is £15 per day (again payable on the day at the gate or in advance over the phone) you can play from 9am-11pm daily
PRIZE FUNDS
We'll be allocating specific prizes to specific games dependent upon the number of entrants but Amateur CS tournie will have a prize fund value of £5,000. Other prizes will include holidays, hardware, software and at the moment we are organising the prize for the free draw (everybody gets a ticket when they turn up) we are hoping to secure a car as the prize but will let you all know as and when stuff happens.
EATING & DRINKING
ALCOHOL IS AVAILABLE 24 HOURS - there are four bars surrounding the gaming area in Centre Stage (primary largest venue) and three in Reds (secondary slightly smaller venue). Extra vending machines will be laid on (for the heavy snackers amongst you). We also have Burger King on site, Pinewood Studios Restaurant, Finnegans fish and chips and you can order pizza direct to your PC any time day or night. Jumpin Jaks nightclub will also be available but I guess most of you will be more interested in Fraggin yourselves silly????
GAMING
All gaming will be handled by Multiplay as it would at any i-series event.
Any more questions either post or pm me and I'll give you answers as quickly as poss.......

A couple more questions - apologies if you've already answered these in this (now rather long!) thread:
~ Is bedding provided or do we still need to bring our own sleeping bags etc? (Just thought it was worth checking....)
~ Having chosen the 'self-catering' option, what facilities, if any, are there in the rooms themselves for this? Any fridge, for example?
~ Will any of the restaurants on site be serving breakfast during the lan? (I'd pay money for a decent breakfast)
Been impressed with your level of response so far, Beanieboy - well played :)
Beanieboy
11th October 2005, 09:22
No problems on the breakfast front as you can buy it from Pinewood Studios Restaurant (big breakfast coffe etc about £4-£5) or from Sun and Moon Pub (more choice from £1.95-£6) Burger King opens at 10am you can also get bacon baps from Costa Coffee in the Skyline Pavillion from 8am
OK........ Self Catering Accom includes everything you need including cooker, fridge and I think, microwave. You also get an iron and ironing board and there are on-site launderettes.
All bedding including sheets, duvet, pillows etc etc are included but you might like to bring your own towels. Most rooms have bath instead of shower but it depends on the level of accommodation you pay for.
Tell you what though, if there are four of you and you want to stay in the brand new hotel its certainly worth it as you get shower, flat screen TV, DVD player and top rooms. Think room for four is £250+ but certainly worth checking out on the bookings page. :D

Is it possible to get the 24hr gaming pass but not have to use butlins accomodation? no offence to butlins intended, it's just i can stay for free elsewhere, but i wouldn't want to have to pack up at 11pm.
how are you planning to enforce that btw? checking everyone's id at 11pm?

If they employ the same security as they do at the I-Series it will be enforced. Heck they even tried throwing out Rocketknight a day early, until the another security bloke got involved and read the badge properly :p:
I susepct there will be different coloured badges/wristbands/etc.
Beanieboy
11th October 2005, 12:09
Yes you can play and not stay but unfortunately due to security restrictions, fire regulations and other Butlins type rules, anyone not staying on the resort has to be gone by 11pm. :(
Although 99% of people will stay over we will have an allocated area within the main gaming arena for day pass gamers. We are also planning on issuing wristbands for ID and security purposes. We have to be strict on this so no wristband = no entry.

Hi there, i'am new to this and have a few questions:
- Do spectators get access to everything that the people gaming do eg. Rides, Arcades, Clubs etc, minus the LAN of course?
- Will we be able to log onto the network via Wireless from our rooms (for when we're too drunk to be seen in public :) )
- Will the spectators be able to actually come to my PC?, say if my brother wanted to watch me play a game?
- What hardware is required, 10/100 Mbit/s standard card?
- Whats the security like?, i dont want to be missing a Mouse or Keyboard when i go and get a drink - How's that managed?
- Is there an opening time on Thursday 5th or just show up anytime on that day?
- Is there a list of Games that will be played? .. So if i haven't got any i can stock up before hand.
Thanks in advance. - Steve

Yes spectators can access all resort facilities except Lan. Dont know about wireless you'll have to ask Multiplay bout that one:)
Should be no problem with spectators around machines but security will be very tight as we have dedicted 24 hour security teams in the gaming venues and around the resort we also have cctv
Again you'll have to direct hardware/gaming questions to Multiplay but if its any help the BCGC should be exactly like an i-series event.
Registration on the Thursday starts at 1pm and gaming will continue from then until the Sunday afternoon prize giving etc

For all you console fans, we will have 15 X-box pods available for some tournies. We are thinking having a Fifa 2006 competition with some nice prizes, hardware etc maybe X-box 360s dont know yet but will let you know.
Would need about 64 players for a decent tournie, what do you think??

I reckon most of your questions can be answered with the i-series FAQ list since in effect, lan wise, this will be identical to a typical event.
http://www.multiplay.co.uk/faqs.asp?s=2
Any questions that aren't covered there I'm sure Beanieboy will have an answer to pretty sharpish.
I have to admit I'm quite excited about this event. It does seem plenty of thought and planning are going into it.
Fingers crossed it doesn't go tits up ;)

Beanieboy, are you offering this gaming weekend to travel agents in the uk? or is it only bookable direct with butlins?
Beanieboy

Yes call the number (0870 242 0870) to make your bookings and the guys in the booking dept will sort you out.
No the event is not on offer via holiday agents only through PC Gamer and Custom PC Mags (next month), Lan centres across the UK, internet and Butlins ads/brochures etc.
If you still need to book you should do so quite soon as places will begin to go quckly.
IF YOU HAVE ANY BOOKING PROBLEMS PLEASE CALL ME DIRECT ON 01243 870994

UT2K4 - yes
BFV - not so much
BF2 - very much so
MOH:AA - small groups of fans
COD - yes
COD2 - wait and see but all points to yes
pacific assault - not sure
SOF2 - not really often
CSS - yes
Servers can be setup if there is enough interest and you bribe a blue shirt, the usual currency is that of BEER - the universal language.
Edit - misread what forum this was in, above is the usual setup for MPUK lans but obviously ButLAN's might be different.

Sorry to seem like im constantly pestering you for definitions, but what exactly does the following (from your website mean)
Open Prize Battlefield 2 Tournie
It has previously been stated by your self as being £6000 prize pool with £3000 to the winner , £2000 & £1000 to 2nd and 3rd respectivly.
Has this changed, if so any information on the new structure?

Details about the tournaments will be made clearer closer to the time, for the time being our next event is i26 (http://www.multiplay.co.uk/i26) once this is over we'll be giving you more details about things such as tournaments at the Butlins Computer Gaming Championships.
As for your query regarding BYOC and cheating - a lot of games these days come with anti-cheat software such as punkbuster or similar. For Counterstrike at the i-series we run "Cheating Death" anti-cheat software, it will most likely be the same at Butlins Computer Gaming Championships.
We have run hundreds of tournaments so our admins are highly experienced and know how to deal with cheating, should it ever arise - which is rare at our events anyway.
Hope this answers your question - keep an eye out for more details in the coming months
