... have stupid signature's that tell us all about pointless stats that we don't give a crap about..
Such sig's include people's screen resolutions.. If I wanted to know about your 1900x1600 resolution then I would ask.

Other's include various pointless channel plugs like "JOIN OUR CLANZ .. GO TO #JOIN_CLANS" or "COME TO #CHAV"

Or the most annoying type is the crap head with the 800x600 gif signature..

My rant is finished.

think this is definitely in the right section :D

Personally I don't see what's so bad about signatures, be it a funny comment, link to a website, machine specs, whatever.

I find it rather odd (a phenomenon peculiar to these forums) that people who don't seem to have any affiliation to multiplay are so concerned that their comments might bring disrepute to the company they have a disclaimer, but that's just my observation.

Fair enough, half the time it's completely useless (and you do have the option of turning them off, as has been stated before) but they're harmless fun (unless offensive or overly large) - and I have contacted someone who had their machine spec to ask them about a problem I was having with a similar setup.

If it bothers you THAT much, why do you have a sig yourself?

It was because some people once took a personal opinion as the stated opinion of MPUK as a whole.
So to prevent any further misunderstandings, it was agreed that "regular" staff would put a disclaimer in their sig. It clears up any ambiguity. :)

That's fair enough, thanks for the clear up - but I would think to avoid confusion anyone who could claim to represent Multiplay should put that in their signature so as denote that they work for MPUK (even in a volunteer capacity)

*shock* another use for sigs! :D

GeeDee
12th September 2005, 16:55
The confusion came from the fact that a lot of volunteer staff who won't be providing official responses have the hyperlinked 'Multiplay UK' in their forum title.

So now they have a disclaimer. :)

Why is there a need to take individuality away? Signatures and Avatars are a way of expressing who you are and differentiating you from the others around you. In real life, people change their clothes, hair cuts, cars ... a facility lacking in forums.

If you were are car fanatic you are likely to promote your interest through bumper stickers, posters, branded clothing, how is this different to a gamer wishing to show off the specifications of the rig which they have so lovingly constructed, especially since this is a compuer gaming forum? ... admittedly such a signature may be considered out of place in a cross-stitch forum, but surely it is entirely appropriate for a gaming forum such as this.

Why is there a need for blandness and conformity? As a community we have a reputation for individuality, eccentricity, and personal excess which the general public may consider bizaree, but it is what makes us a great community.

So show a little compassion and tolerance and embrace the differences.

Back in the days of dial up, I used to quickly lose patience with large sigs with huge images and ended up changing my settings so I couldn't see them anymore. There's days, it's not really a problem. I can't think of a single person on here who has a particular annoying sig. I'm sure they'd get told if it gouged everyone's eyes out every time they viewed it.

I hate the way that anytime MPUK hosts servers for a game, people will come bitch on these forums about it in some way.

That massive Halo post was a good example, but the Battlefield 2 servers are the latest thing. Clans rent a server, the server is usually branded in such a way that the clan name is quite obvious, yet whenever there is a problem playing on that server, people will quite happily come onto this forum and bitch like little ****ing dogs about how they were mistreated or some **** whilst playing on the server, and proceed to lambast anyone in sight, MPUK included.

Get a ****ing life.

And this thread was started by someone complaining about the fact people have sigs and avatars, er00 was just defending the purpose of an avatar, and yet some sad pathetic people insist on slagging her off for it? She never claimed that she needed them to read the forum, just that it makes it an easier process, a comment that a fair few people agree with. It's a scientifically proven fact that the human brain makes connections with images easier than through text and can recognise pictures quicker than it can text.

This is partially true, I *think* a higher number of people connect more and can associate people with pictures/images than with their name. I used to do quite a lot of stuff about how the brain works etc when people at school were trying to "help" me *rolls her eyes*, it mainly depends on how your brain works, whether you're mainly "male" brained or "female" and how the different sides connect etc, but I'm pretty sure that most people can connect images more easily than names. Although of course there are always exceptions to this.

No.
It amuses me that people are unable to function on the forums if they don't have avatars enabled, or someone has the same avatar as someone else when there is a clear label just a few pixels above it showing who the poster is. That was my point.
Perhaps you'd like an image describing this?

Perhaps you'd like an image describing this? No one has ever said they can't. People made the point that they use avatars to recognise people more than reading the name as it's easier, no one ever claimed they couldn't ever read the forum again if they were disabled. Yet people insist on going "omg lol /chicken on you n00b!" just because they do something differently.
The username on the forum is also not a clear label, anyone with a reading difficulty (such as dyslexia) can tell you that black text on a light background is actually one of the hardest colour combinations for them to read.

My point is that no one forces people to have avatars turned on, no one forces people to have sigs turned on, some people find the use of these things aids them in reading the forum because it makes identifying someone slightly quicker than reading the name. While the forum would function perfectly without them, and everyone would still beable to read it, some people would be able to read it slightly less efficiently. That's all it boils down to, and people calling people idiotic, stupid, and telling them to grow up isn't needed or helpful. (While it wasn't you that said exactly that your comments are also mocking people who can more easily identify images than text, which IMO is wrong)

Although of course there are always exceptions to this.

Indeed, it's to do with which side of your brain is more dominant, left sided is logic, speech, reading and writing, right sided is pattern recognition and spatial awareness. The male/female comes from the way that a higher percentage of males are right sided, and a higher percentage of females are left sided.

There are always exceptions of course, but image recognition is generally always faster because it's pretty much all delt with by the one side and area of the brain, whereas with text recognition the brain has to first decide that it's not just a shape but text and then switch over to the other side. This is one of the reasons why most important signs are picture based rather than text. A motorist can identify a no entry sign in the fraction of the time it'd take the brain to read the words "no entry" (language differences weren't really a major issue when the first road signs came around)
