Do the golf course employ bigger spiders to salvage balls or something?

Killy

lets just say the wildlife round there isn't exactly small, and there is a large surrounding woodland area with the golf course

They sat on street corners saying to catapillers and worms; "spare a penny for the homeless?".

I had to call in an airstrike on a big one the other day, the body was about the size of my thumb, the damn thing threw the shoe back!

i used to get them like that in Hereford, because we live across the road from the racecourse there. Alot of greenery = big ass spiders... there is of course this:

note: that is two camel spiders together, not one!

wasn't there some debate over that photo? something about the perspective or whatnot...

Cheez
22nd August 2005, 13:34
Yeah its a forced perspective shot. Same technique they use in films to make people look shorter or taller. I mean don't get me wrong they're big spiders. But not THAT big.

Read the site you just now linked....

"Camel spiders can grow to be as large as dinner plates"

The website is disputing the description of them, claiming that they are flesh eating etc etc...

It actually confirms that they are that big, just not as dangerous as people make out.

They actually have counselling sessions for soldiers out in iraq to deal with the fear of these creatures.

JeRkY
22nd August 2005, 14:36
if you read more carefully it states it is a myth that they grow to dinner plate size. Further down it says they are only 5-6" accross the leg.

Semajal

google largest spider in the world sorted that argument. Quickly able to tell its not quite true to life.

pos
22nd August 2005, 15:20
depends on the size of your dinner plate eh? ;)
Exe received an email the other day with a video of one on a wall, chewing up a lizard. That one was pretty big, i'll see if he has it and post a link.

Still wouldnt want to meet one on a dark night, would you?

Lucifa
22nd August 2005, 16:03
The most important thing to note about the camel spiders (apart from the fact they don't live here THANK ****) is that they aren't spiders.

But they do, and I quote, "live on a diet of human faces."

I went to Africa on a safari back in my teens and by golly I saw some FAT spiders out there. The kinda things that cling to the side of your tent...

Im not a spider person at all.....they say human beings are naturally phobic to anything with 8 legs. 8 legs = poison.

I don't think the camel spider one is forced perspective at all. You can see the guys hand and sleeve in the top right corner, giving perspective...

Either way, they're mean little buggers, can eat scorpions!

her0n
23rd August 2005, 14:16
I think the idea is that naturally people will compare the spider with the pair of legs behind it.. thus making it appear to be a HUGE MOTHER of a spider.. :O

http://video.clipstream.com/content/c/camel_spiders/camel spiders (http://video.clipstream.com/content/c/camel_spiders/)

Camel spiders are not spiders. They are sometimes called "wind scorpions" but they are not scorpions either. They are a different species of arthropod called solipugids which are not venomous or have silk-making capacity. The name 'camel spider' may come from their often being found on corpses of camels which has lead to the myth that they actually can kill camels. In truth, they will use the body of a camel to prey upon other insects that gather around carrion. Also, it has been said that the camel spider will use the hair it collects to build a nest. Whether or not it will use human hair collected from sleeping soldiers is also not confirmed.

Heh. You'd love what I saw in a pet shop once then.

A tarantula had shed/lost it's leg, and the leg was bolt upright in it's water bowl, bending and straightening.

The tarantula was on the other side of the tank. CREEPY!

I was reading in bed last night when I saw one of the big ones scuttle across the floor. I went and squished it with a shoe, and squished it good. Carried on reading, and about an hour later went to turn light off and the spider had gone.I'd completely mangled this thing, it looked like he was doing yoga. And yet he'd hit Release Spirit and res'd and then buggered off. Surprised I got to sleep tbh

her0n, you're bloody brave for catching the thing and not chucking it out the window!

Come to think of it, when someone catches a spider and throws it out the window, does the spider survive or does it splat on the floor?

hmm i should say splat or die of cold

Unfortunately it will be fine. :(

Falling damage (as well as being a % of Hit points :p) is related to size...

Here comes the science bit.

Mass is related to volume, given that density is fairly constant for all creatures. (We're basically all water - birds are a bit lighter because they have bubbly bones) Volume increases with linear size to the third power (length cubed).

The damage you take on hitting the ground will be related to how much wind resistance you encounter on the way down, and the size of the area that contacts the ground. Both of these are related to area, which increases with linear size to the second power (length squared)

So, mass gets bigger quicker than area and bigger things take more falling damage than small things.

What this means is that when thrown from a window, a spider will not even notice the impact on hitting the ground, a mouse would walk away, a human would break a neck or both legs and an elephant would go splat.

I'm not entirely sure of my facts but I think there's one type of spider that migrates by spinning a long length of silk out into the wind and allowing itself to be blown along.

Had a mate who worked in a fruit importing factory type environment
Del monte? I forget.
Anyway, they shipped in huge crates from Africa, and various other tropical parts of the world.

The stuff he said they found in there, would make me crap my pants.
Spiders, scorpions, frogs, centipedes, moths, wasps, hornets etc etc

They got paid extra to tolerate these kind of things

No chance Id work in there

PS I say had, he has now fked off to uni, he is still alive, not to worry ;)

Not to worry Boff, The other spider which is most likely alot larger would of devoured the squished one from your shoe and saved you the bother of hav'nt to clean it off the next morning....
