View Full Version : BF2CC Daemon

Whats the chance of running BF2CC daemons on the ranked servers (you can run multiple copies on the same server).
Without the dameon there is no security in BF2CC so any admin can do any task and change config. Our clan wouldn't be able to roll it out like that. We have 30+ admins. With the daemon there is security like clanforge's own account levels.
I talked to Brendan about these issues and his reponse was "why can't you just run the daemon" So I thought I'd come ask.
I know the BF2CC daemon itself has to start the game up so maybe that's an issue, along with being able to config stuff in two places.
The use of .net would preclude install on our Unix boxes this is generally enough to reject something totally as we run a multi OS farm.
The worry is that in the past we have had major headaches trying to support "daemons" as they add overhead, complicate management, confict with our builtin server management and often have bugs all of their own which break things.
Im not saying all or any of these will be the case with this daemon but running a single daemon on one server is a total different ball game to running it across 500 servers multi OS so we would have to carefully test it before considering it.
Not sure if the -quit option got added in, which would also be a required but I'll bug Brandon about that :D
So the answer is maybe :D

There seem to be quite a few testing it under Linux, using a product called mono (.net for Linux). I don't know anything about mono personally, I've not used it.
There is info in this (http://www.bf2cc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=624) thread.
We dont use linux we use FreeBSD and installing major emulation software like that is not something to be taken trivially when there's over 150 machines envolved as such I'd say its highly unlikely we would consider it.

I quite understand that. I've already warned the admins they are unlikely to get BF2CC on the ranked server.
If we could get PB screenshots working from the user menu in clanforge that would be adequate for many of our admins.
Thats definitely some thing that will get sorted its just waiting on EB / EA getting PB working properly in BF2 rcon :(
We would be interested in knowing which features you would like to see either enabled in the rcon only version of BF2CC or adding / updating in ClanForge.
And Im also keeping a close eye on:

It's been a long day, so these are kind-off random thoughts:
---
Change to any map in the rotation next, not just the next one in the list. BF2CC does this but Clanforge only allows you to change to next map in the rotation. Guess this could be added to clanforge?
---
Auto change all players to opposite team at the end of round (BF2CC has this - you can then play the same map twice in a row once on each side).
---
Easily PB screenshot people. I mentioned this already, but I though about the possibility of a MM module instead. Really we use PB screenshots only when we suspect someone of cheating. It would be great idea to have a mm_screenshot module. Only needs three commands:
mm_screenshot.interval 5 // minutes between screenshots
mm_screenshot.maxshots 10 // maximun pics to take of a player
mm_screenshot.addPlayer "Elited00d" (to make a list)
It's kind-of like turning on random screenshotting in PB, but targeted at just the players added, so performance does not dive.
And then is would just take PB screenshots (when PB works!) without interrupting the admins game. (BF2CC does not do this)
---
Smart Autobalance that will allow clan members to all play on the same team, *if they want to*. This is an issue in BF2CC smart autobalance too. You can't change teams. I guess the answer is to have a parameter of clanTag which allows anyone with that tag to switch from one team to the other.
---
Moving individual players from one team to another (BF2CC does this) although I'm not quite sure how it interacts with smart autoblance.
---
The killer (no pun intened) thing about BF2CC will be in the next big release when it is supposed to get an in-game overlay to allow you to warn and kick people etc without alt-tabbing.
---
I'm sure there are others. I would canvas the other admins but I'm sure the list would then be exhaustive!

Brendan replied to me to say "The daemon works fine on FreeBSD".

I got the move player from one team to the other working in my own rcon program through using the bf2cc module of modmanager on our server.
quite handy really, although instant switch has problems to do with how bf2 is made :(

Sorry if this isn't where I should have posted this - but I'm trying to get the BF2CC Client to work under R-Con and have been told the scripts on my server are 3.9 and I need to install the 4.2 - How can we get the scripts on the servers updated?
Should I be using the Daemon instead?
Cheers
Is that a multiplay server if so:
1. Have you restarted?
2. If yes to #1 which one as they should all be @ 4.2

OMG... ok - that was very NOOB of me :p Cheers Killing, of course it's working now. I totally forgot to restart.
ANy idea on when we can see the Daemon working?

the daeon is not supported or needed the daemon only does the same as what the modmanager scripts do.
either or doing the same job. so no real benefit or need for it.

Not quite, the daemon implements roll-based security and smart admin features.
