Hi
I have recently bought bf2 but need to buy a new pc before i can play it, getting an Alienware :D
Once i have got used to the game i really really really REALLY want to play online with real people, the idea of 64 people, on 2 teams, on 1 one map and firing tonnes of lead at each other is unreal!!!!!!
But i'm a complete beginner at playing online, how do i get started?

It will actually stick an icon on your desktop saying "Play BF2 Online Now!". Click that and it'll join you to a server
i would suggest, but someone would dissagree with me ;)
we were fortunate enough to have the demo version online to cut our teeth on.
start with the single player maps, learn the classes and maps. then venture on line to smaller team matches 16vs16 etc. get to know what your doing.
read the bf2.org forums, i found them really usefull.
go online and have fun. join an ingame squad and just tag along with the team nature.
u dont necessary need to go on ranked servers (which are oversubscribed as everyone wants to boost rank and unlock weapons etc). try searching in browser for "EA UK" (these are the official ea servers) which multiplay hosts. if ucant get on these then go for unranked clanservers..

nah m8ty
just pick a server
makes sure it has a low PING as well
the lower the number say less than 250 the better the connection
ie no lag
avoid servers with ping above 400
they will be laggy and it will piss u off lol
have fun, its bloody awesome online!! :D

Bah 64 players is carp
try planetside its 3 teams 133 per side per map (400player per side used to be 500) there 10 maps per server that run simultaneos (sp?) 3 servers the euro server pings at 25-60 depending on your connection. MMOFPS's are the future this ones pretty good :D
