This is still undergoing planning, it will be in 2002 around March in San Antonio.
Expect full details inc prices etc after I get back from I7.
:multi: :multi: :multi: :multi:
Yes you heard right.
This started as a joke comment on another thread, but after some thought I decided to look into this further.
heres the deal, just like mpuk lan, except that it is for a week.
You either pay your own flight and sort out your own accomodation.
and then pay entrance on a daily or basis,
Or
We (the ibiza lan company) do an all inclusive lan party for a week during summer. We provide flights, floor space as defualt, charge extra for a room with bed etc, and even if needed hire of a pc and monitor.
we (the company) setup the venue, provide insurance etc etc, just like going for a week with thompson sort of thing, picked up by coach at the airport, taken to the venue, usual stuff, droppped off at the end of the week.
You get to stay in a sleeping bag on the floor (or room if booked) and play computer games in betweenest going to the beach, exploring, partying etc etc.
I thought perhaps that we could offer this to all of europe, to all lan groups, and have the monster of all LANS in Ibiza.
throw in organised trips to some of the clubs etc, day trips usual stuff.
Probably twice a year, once in March, and once in June/july/august/whenever.
I just thought I would run this by you, see how many are interested, maybe take your famillies with you etc etc..
just use the pc's a couple of the days if you wish, its an all in package, up to you if you use it (the computers)..
What do you think, I was thinking of around £400 per person for a week in Ibiza, flights from manchester and london,
Any body interested.
if you are, then wizzo I may be interested in making a business proposition regarding hire of kit for the week!
Also, nearly every country in europe has lan groups, does anyone know any links to them so I can test the water.
I have a colleague at work who speaks lots of languages, and I work for a hotel company, so I might even be able to arrange the hire of a hotel for a week as well. (at discounted rate) - what do you think ?
The Hotel company I work for has empty hotels during March, complete with swimming pool. large bar and dining area, and can hold a few hundred people, and is based in san antonio.
Maybe around a 15 - 20 min walk into the town centre of san antonio.

Ok, This is now a go.
March 2002. or possibly April.
Plane flight from manchester or London, Hotel accomodation including shared room, all with ensuite.
I am looking at the cutoff of 100. any more than that and its a bonus.
Everything is for me on this one, I have a friendly bank manager who will set up the credit card payments at a discount.
A boss who owns hotels and is really keen on the idea, did I mention we do our own flights and have 4 planes a week, only for our hotel clients.. and he is able to negotiate literally booking a charter plane especially..
£400 per person, I am also looking at hire of PC's for 100 people. It is going to be a toughie this, 400 is a fair amount, but to cover the cost of hiring PC's I may need to charge an extra 30 or 40 quid. Details later..
This year I am setting up Lan parties in Ibiza for the locals, if your visiting Ibiza this year, gimme a shout, meet you for a beer, wizzo lots to discuss at I7 m8!.
Next Year sees the Launch of IB1.
Insomnia Baleares 1
Ibiza Bash 1
Either way, its a go.
I have a website which is crap but can soon be changed, it is http://www.ibizapc.com
which will be the new home of the Ibizan Lan parties.
Ideally it will be twice a year, once at the beginning of the season and one at the end, (just before cafe del mar closes!)
Next year, definately Ibiza Lan is on in March, May be I'll do one in spetember/october, we will see.
In the next few days I will be putting costings and budgets etc etc..
After meeting wizzo at I7 (I have lots to discuss), expect some major details..
This will be going out to all Lan groups across europe, so expect some friendly rivalry going on,
Can you imagine playing the germans at counter strike in teams?
Forget 1 v 1, more Uk v GE, etc etc
this is very exciting indeed, I am aiming to break even on 100 people, now that is around 12 people per country.
Uk
France
Germany
Italy.
Norway
Sweden
Holland
Spain
there are others, (my geogrpahy is fairly poor!) but I am hoping to fill at least 100 places, thats realistic, the time scale is realistic, the place here is a major attraction, march is a good time, cold in UK, its 22 deg C here today and I am in a T shirt with short sleeves!.
Most Hotels are fairly empty but as it is the strart of the season bars are open, some of the discos are open (pacha is open 6 days a week all year)
And most of all it is one excellent place, imagine, combing sun, sea sand and computers and friends, wicked.!
So this will be One big massive once a year mother of all Lan Parties, its going to rock!!!.
:) The best idea I ever had, after getting married and moving here!.
(Yes, I am looking for sponsorship, advice, the works, wizzo, i want to have your children!)

Me thinks this could be good for us pasty white UK gamers :D
How about moving it to the beach :)
Gaming in the sun.. you could even power the event from solar panels !
Oh.. One thing.. Over heating ?
Us overclocking types might have a bit of a problem.

The Hotel is air conditioned, and in March / April the air conditioners wont be pushed at all.
(unlike June/july when the temperature almost reaches 40 deg C)
The clubs are very expensive peak season, but in march april are either free or 5,000 psts which is around 20 quid.
There is lots for me to look into, I really have to do a business plan for this and plan it very carefully.
The Hotel I have in mind doesn't normally open until May, so I can hold the event any time in march or april.
And as for drink prices, well lets see in the clubs, er.. what can i say, i err, drink water ;)
as for the normal bars and stuff, a meal in a restaurant for me and the wife costs less than £10 including drinks, and a normal lager costs around a £1.60 for a pint, a shot of vodka or spirit really is something to be believed and costs around £1.70 for a measure around 3 or 4 times that of the UK.
Expect to pay a lot less for eating and drinking out than in the UK to say the least!.

That is one event i dont wanna miss, with a 3grand student loan, i think i might just be able to afford it. Zhar what about group shipping of pc's ?
zhardoum
15th March 2001, 15:37
this is something I am looking into, what I am trying to do is to work out the cost of either, shipping the pc by courier, and the additiinal excess weight of excess bagage for the weight of a PC.
Then once I have those figures, I can work out what would be a fair rate to hire a pc from here.
Having moved here last year, I know that it costs £5000 to have a lorry drive from the UK to Ibiza using Pickfords.
Thats a £10k return trip.
now 100 people would equate to a fee of £100 each!
Plane excess bagage costs around £30 to bring a 10KG weight return.
What I need to do, is really work out the prices exactly so that a) it is reasonable to the customer
b) covers my costs, and may even provide a small profit.
All these things have to be worked out in great detail, and believe me, I will post a set figure once all the overheads and costs have been calculated.
This is very exciting, and requires a great deal of planning. I will look very carefully at MONITOR HIRE, as it is one thing to bring your base unit, but your monitor? I will try and include monitor hire in the price, but I can't promise anything yet till I ahve looked into this a lot more.
If anyone has any suggestions or comments to make this run more smoothly, with things you would like to see, then either post here or email adrian@adriansworld.com or see me at I7.

after some digging, trhe hotel opens normally in may, to open it especially for one week, hire of staff etc and then closing it again make it very expensive at that time.
However, if we hold it the week before the hotel normally opens IE end of april, then the hotel remains open, the costs are greatly reduced and everyone benefits.
most hotels here open for easter, then despite the fact there is a two week quiet period, they stay open as its cheaper than closing them and reopening them.
It is this quiet period, just after easter and before May that I am aiming for, it should be around 27 or 28 deg C by then :)
So we all benefit, you get better weather and reasonable prices, and I get to actually keep my house :)
(To open a hotel for a week and close it again after is almost 100k)
Do the figures, you can see that this, is playing for big stakes, not making it, but the possibility of losing it.
So as I see it April, just after easter, just before may, is looking very likely.
PS nearly all the bars etc open in easter and remain open then until the end of season.
There is going to be plenty more posts on this subject I can assure you,
So, you have just over one year to start saving!.

Zhar,
You are most def. on!
I'll just personally ship my pc to a location you have access to, and hire a monitor, and then be sorted..

But....How do I ship 250KG of servers?

Zhardoum,
Yep that will be a good one! I'll have to run it past the by then wife, so I may have to bring her with me ( a free holiday! She'll be gutted of course)
Zeb buy a knackered transit(it's only got to do a couple of hundred miles tops), shove as much kit as you can in it and freight it by sea, have to check but should be able to do it for £200-300, and then sell the transit for what you bought it for when you get back!

16th March 2001, 08:07
Courier costs,
let me see I bought a scanner recently (bleedin heavy 35mm film scanner by cannon) which was shipped next day and cost around £40 from the UK to Ibiza.
I suppose if you let it take three days rather than one it gets cheaper, so for a base unit it could well be feasable, I coule bring my base to I7, to work out what the charge would be, and to see how fast i get arrested at the airport for carrying a bomb!.
Wonder what the scanner person at the airport would make of lots of suitcases full of wires and stuff :)
SmartMonkeys idea of getting a cheap transit, and driving it here and back isnt half bad, take around 3 days each way to drive yourself straight one way, (inc. rests).
Maybe worth looking at, wonder about insurance though? theft may not be a problem if two people with the van and 1 always with it, but a breakdown, or god forbid an accident..
lots of things to investigate here..
Zeb
16th March 2001, 09:17
Zhar,
At 40 a pop each way, it's insured, and probably a lot easier to handly. As i'd be already spending >400 UKP, what's 70-80 quid.... For peace of mind that whatever happens, it's insured....*yea, sure*
But realisticly, if it's £30 for overweight on luggage on the plane, i'd spend the extra tenner not to have to carry it.....
- Zeb
p.s. Zhar, you fancy helping my and smart with our servers for i7?
zhardoum
16th March 2001, 10:30
By all means, as long as wizzo and the crew are ok with it, and if it is personal help your after (as in not for MPUK) then if MPUK need me, then I must do that first.
I am down as yellow shirt staff for I7, and whilst I will help you when I can, I must remain available for MPUK duties.
unless you are MPUK, and you can get wizzo to ok it. In that case, if Wizzo is it Ok with then, then yeah sure..
Either way, Ill be only to glad to help, but as I said MPUK duties take precedence, but in my spare time I will help sure.

what about hiring a minivan and getting a couple of us to share the cost/driving to ibiza, im sure theres a ferry from mainland Spain. It would citainly be cheeaper to hire it for a week than flights.
zhardoum
16th March 2001, 14:30
This is just one thing I am looking at, you have to remember it is a 3 day drive!, there is a ferry from valencia or barcelona, but are a minimum of 8 hours!! by boat ugh!! from barcelona its a lot longer :(.
I am seriously looking at all sorts of options from chartering a plane (110 people for 10.5k) to hiring vans through to all sorts of things..
Work currently charters four planes a week, and I am in talks with work on a business basis about the hire of venue, staff, facilites and a whole host of things..
There is a great deal of planning for this, and I need to drum up support on the island as well from local suppliers through to the press and radio, and maybe even TV.
sponsorship is going to have to play a part, somewhere, in this market thats hard, but if i can play the european card, bringing gamers in from all over europe, I stand a far better chance of keeping my house!.
The hotel in question at the moment has 42 rooms, which can sleep 4, but in reality is 2 beds and 2 couches :(
However we do own 4 hotels on the island, and the wifes familly have very powerful friend on the island, who owns 58 hotels on the island, and he is very famous in spain, and a good man. I am looking in his direction for a possible venue!!! (I kid you not, this bloke is in his 60's and is treated as roalty in spain).
It is all very much in the air at the moment.
I desperately need to talk to wizzo and smart monkey.
Wizzo, do you and your partner fancy a week in Ibiza, free accomodation at my place, later this year?
Same goes for you smart monkey, I will need lots of advice with this.
Also, I am starting in May this year, but smaller events for the locals to get a better feeling for how it will run on the island, remember it isnt just UK but the whole of Europe who hopefully will attend!..

ROTFL..
Smart, a works flight return is £120 per person, over a week, sat to sat, however book through the internet and if you look hard enough you can go as low as £49 return!! however you may have to leave at some ungodly hour.
To fly from spain to Uk, i found http://www.despegar.com really useful, they have it in english as well!
I also flew via go and all sorts of UK cheap flights, all booked on line, but again, the cheaper you get, the more you end up flying a 1.00 am
However, from april/may onwards all the charter flights start up, and £110 per person is expensive, expect to pay between £75 to £99 per person via online booking.

Zhardoum,
Just read your full post, Kind offer but I will have to defer to Wizzo as the master of LAN parties, my speciality is scrounging kit and setting up small impromptu lans with my mates (all on 1 switch).
Could do Wizzo type stuff but not sure if I can afford the learning curve (or the Extreme top level switch!).
BTW I need somewhere warm (20 degrees +) for a week to ten days from around the second of December, with a bit of culture and a few bars (for a honeymoon) Would Ibiza suit? or is it all clubs in season and nothing to do the rest of the year?

actually despegar aint no use to you lot.. :(
12 people per country was the target figure for me to break even. gives me a total of 100 people.
100 people makes my life easier for adding up.
Obviously over 100 and i might start to see a little profit, but this is the first event, I plan to do this annually, if the numbers bookign dictate bigger venues etc then obviously i will look into it.
If i got 12 people for each country, from 8 countries, then I am happy, if I get more, then i will be very happy and very stressed!.
It doesn't take much math skills to see this is big numbers boys and girls, 100people @ £400 each = 40,000k.
Then for each 100 people double it, 80k 120k, 1.6 k
If I was to get say 826 people like wizzo has for I7, then that is a total incoming of 330K
However, take away 826 plane fares, 826 lots of hotel accomodation, computers, overheads tax etc etc etc.. there wont be much left.
This is a bit weird this, the figures are bogling, I stand to make a little (maybe total 4k, before tax and partners) but I stand to loose 200K.

We will talk at I7, but the offer is still open.
It isn't an offer with a hidden agenda. Bring the would be wife..
As for dates for this years parties, probably starting in May, and then one a month from then on, we shall see, I may goto I8, in which case I may not do a party that month, dont know yet.
As for more kit, not at the mo, probably dribs and drabs over the next few months m8..
As to Ibiza in December, the weather is ok, but it is very quiet, all the locals mainly stay in and watch TV and mong out, awaiting the season to start, they are a weird bunch the locals, moan like mad all summer, and then complain theres nothing to do at winter!.
mainly during winter the locals go out friday and saturday.
Somewhere warm, well I suggest Tenerife or somewhere around the Canaries, its always warm there, and as long as you avoid the mafia and the touts its an ok place. If tenerife for gods sake go north near the old centre, stay well clear of the south around playa las americas, and los gigantes, its hell on earth, no beaches nothing, basically the south of tenerife is an old volcano, nothing but hard black granite.
The north missed the volcanic fun and is still unspoilt beaches and nice, the south, forget it.

Hi guys,
Sorry for my abscence, I err, sort of found a place on IRC that err, well, err has some files I needed... (spelt filez)
If you get my gist, downloaded around 1GB :)
Right then, Ibiza Lan.
Promo vid, cool idea, but can't afford it, it would need to be done in around 6 languages, and well there is so much info on Ibiza already, that tbh for this stage of the game is a bit much, maybe for IB2 in 2003..
Trying to keep costs down to an absolute bare minimum for the first one, have to watch the pennies..
ok, I am speaking to some people here on Tuesday, re venue and times and costs, and I have my wife also pulling strings to see who has a spare venure at a good cost.
Hey, your spending decent cash so you expect a decent place, on the other hand, I can't go mad, so no hilton venue i am afraid.
The time is as yet unknown, all I can say is I am trying to get this done for march, or ideally april, just after easter.
Smart Monkey. yes I do need that second switch, plus cable, but at the moment moneys tight, just got promoted at work but it hasn't come through yet, so maybe at I7 on a budget :(
Will def take the one as agreed, ps still need to borrow your spare base for I7.
This is a go, and the reason for no info, is, that I have to get the figures donw, the hotel contracts ironed out, all that jazz, before I can give you any sort of date, other than its march/april 2002.
There are going to be monthly lans from now on in ibiza, but mainly for locals and probably only for a day, get the local interest growing here as well for this year.
first one is in May, if anyone is coming to Ibiza for a holiday this year, give me a shout, ill let you know if there is one on when your coming.
other than that, hold tight, The planning for this is crucial, I realise the sooner I release dates etc then the sooner you can plan it, and even send me money :) but, I can't do that until I know exactly what costs I am looking at.
Fear not, I will keep costs to a minimum, for you and for me..
For now, hasta luego!

Umm, people seemed to have missed this bit, I am looking at 12 per country minimum, obviuosly if I get 110 people from the UK booking then I am not going to say no am I. Unless it completely smashes my budget.
It may well end up uneven numbers, but I am aiming for 100 people in total, the Hotel holds 160 but that means that some people will be on couches.. (hey better than the floor, and at least you have a room).
It has 40 rooms, each with 2 beds, but can sleep 4 a room if people sleep on a couch.
There is also another hotel about 12 mins walk away, which may have room, if additional places are required.
I realise most Lan's involve sleeping bags and the floor, however this is much more than just a lan party, it is a holiday, for a week in ibiza, and as such, creature comforts are needed slightly more. LIKE SHOWERS YOU 'ORRIBLE LOT :)
I have a meeting tomorrow with the MD to ask him how much he would charge etc etc..
And I also have my wifes mother talking to our familly friend, I'll let you know more as soon as I can.
