Why are there two sets of satellite map data? Is it big green stuff that doesn't zoom well "to be scanned" at a later date or something?

quick answer ... yes
top half false colour infra-red at a guess ... quite low res ... prolly 25-30m
bottom half visible spectrum ... not bad res... anywhere from 1 - 5m
Check Out the World Wind CD from NASA (or downloadable) for an idea as to how good/bad particular satellite images are.

World wind "CD" ?
Rofl. that must be truely pants.
I know i downloaded just the "medium" res pics of the UK and it was like 400mb.
With the rest of the world images that ive looked at i think my WW cache folder is about 10gb.
If the whole world data is on there it must just be in level 1 resolution (it goes up to level 7 afaik which is 1m res)

Actually world wind has some 1ft res stuff for some of the US cities.

Check out the free "Google Earth" Program
http://earth.google.com/
Unfortunately most parts of the UK have not been covered in great detail but most of the rest of the world you can zoom right in and get some fantastic views.

Yeah, that google earth thing is great for killing time at work. Alot of the UK is done on the one i have, just let it stream each zoom in stage (takes ages).

I think its simply a case of Google not having collated all the satellite data they need quite yet. Some areas are a blotchy mess, others are in nice high res. The high res stuff misses by house by a matter of miles!!!
