Hi,

If you've had LASIK or Epi-LASEK treatment, can you share your experiences? How was the operation? Was there a period of soreness / irritation afterwards? How long until your eyes felt 'normal' again, and what was the eyesight change like overall ?

I've not had it.

But.

I watched a programme on Discovery Science called 'How It's Made'. They basically do some very quick short films on how things are made, and they also did LASIK surgery.

If watching that didn't put me off, I dunno what did.

Yes its a simple procedure, but its not for the squeamish, and there's so many complications that can arise from it.

Personally - I'll stick with glasses.

My Dad had second thoughts and jumped out the chair.

I wouldn't have Lasik or any other laser ablation treatment on my eyes if you PAID me.
My point of view is that your eyes are one of the most essential parts of yourself. If you start messing with them directly, you risk all sorts of complications.

I have a higher value on my ABILITY to see rather than my actual ACUITY of vision. That's why I wear glasses and not even contacts.

Exactly, I can see, I don't really need glasses that much, I wouldn't risk it tbh. I'm fine wearing glasses thanks...:/

im waiting 10 years for medical science to have caught up

when they can grow me a new eye on the back of a mouse if it goes wrong, then i'll do it.

Don't be taken in by the adverts that have started running on TV for laser eye surgery. Some of these places make outrageous claims like "all over in one hour" and "you'll be able to drive yourself home the same day!" when any proper clinic gives a very different treatment to that. My sister did some research and decided it wasn't worth it, she's sticking with glasses and contacts when she goes out somewhere nice.

Glasses are very fashionable at the moment anyway :)

Its always annoyed me when people wear contacts to 'go somewhere nice'. As far as I'm concerned, I wear glasses, so everybody else can just get used to it.

failed to find glasses i like so i wear contacts, Id find glasses annoying to wear all the time anywhere (was damned glad of contacts when i was on various rollercoasters in the USA) I may see about some form of permanant vision correction but you cant have it done if your eyes are changing (ie getting slightly more short/long sighted) and you have to wait a few years with no change before you should have it done.

My dad's had laser eye surgery (by boots I think), had it about 5 years ago and was originally short sighted.

The night he had it done he needed to be in a low light area (was just in living room with only one light on) with some weird bug eye plastic things on. Was fine the next morning able to drive etc.

His eyes seem fine now except he can no longer read extreme close up writing anymore i.e. shoving a letter right in you face. So overall seems to have worked fine for him, and afaik my friend's dad has had it done with no ill-effects either.

theres nothing wrong with contact lenses i have been wearing them for almost 3/4 years now although i would not recommend useing a pc with them in (they dry up as you blink less)
you have just got to treat them with care.

i was thinking of this laser thing mainly because i hate getting out of bed and trying to remember where the hell i left my glasses the night before (or if i even left them in the pub)

I've weared glasses ever since I was young (after I was born, before computers were about) and to be honest, I dont trust this laser eye malarky. I've looked many times at it, it just doesnt seem right. As for contact, the reason i never wear them (or indeed have them) is becuase my eyes are the wrong shape :'(. I can have contacts, but i've been told they properbly wouldnt work very well. I can see ok without glasses (so long as I dont have to read), but i'm grown so use to wearning them now I dont bother taking them off.

ok non-scientific post...

my wife wears contacts.. the omnthly throw away ones on subscription. She has looked into eye treatment surgery allot and would be better at typing this post than me but still...

she cant have any form of eye corrction surgery becuase here eyes have not been stable for three years.
apparently you should never have it unless your subscription is completly stable.. obviously becuase if they do it and your eye sight changes again its pointless..

the other thing she round from reasearch is that she would never have laser eye surgery... if they mess up you have had it. they only get ONE chance! BUT she found alternative.. diamond cutting (or something like that)

thats where they cut your eyes surface and reshape it. apparently its very easy, but the best thing is that they can redo it as many times they like. so if they dont get it perfect on the first attempt all is not lost. and its approx. the same price. I personally know someone who had it done (thats how we found out) and she is VERY pleased, she feels her eysight is perfect now and it wasnt bad at all.

personally just the thought of anyone touching my eyes is enough to make me feel sick. but i have 20/20 vision! my wife on the otherhand doesnt mind jamming contacts in all the time so when here subscription has been stable she will mkost likely have it done.
