An online version of Settlers of Catan has been around for quite some time I think.

I never really got on with Settlers. Puerto Rico and War of the Ring however are some of the finest board games I've ever played in my life.

you have not lived until you have played "Die Siedleren von Catan"

Mainly because I was only able to find a german import version.

FBL I feel.

I also have the Space version. I shall dig both out.

I play online every now and then. It's much faster paced than the real thing, games take between 10 and 20 minutes.

Is it good? I didn't really understand what was going on when I was passively observing in the Dragon Lodge.

Lots of cries of farms and things.

It's been a while but the game basically plays like this (i think)...

The board is modular consisting of hexes that represent different resources on the island of Catan (iron, corn, wood, etc etc). Each hex (or tile) has a number, which after a roll of the dice, determines which hexes produce resources for that turn. The player has to build roads and towns that connect to these hexes to gain resources that can be traded in to build more roads and cities.

The modular board aspect means that it's a different game each time but it does suffer from relying too much on luck rather than skill.

Catan is a great introduction to the world of "Euro" games but in my opinion there are better, more satisfying games.

I'd agree with that. The online game lets you browse the stats so you can see if there was some unusual roll distributions and see how much was down to skill and how much to lucky rolls.

This site lists the "Spiel des Jahres" award winning game for each year and the runners up:
