Just to put some fire in the discussion

Specifically
Overall System Floating-Point Performance
Xbox360
* 1 TFLOPS
PS3
* 2 TFLOPS
Now look at this.

Looks like your "mini-super computer" idea just got a spanking.
IBM`s new BlueGene solution pushes 136.8 Tflops.
Sitll, you could beat that with 70 PS3`s.
Would be interesting to see the price / performance comparison.
I cant belive that these consoles actually have that much RAW power just sitting there ready for use tho.
If they do, why arent they using the same tech in these super computers.
The BlueGene has 65536 processors running a 2.8Gflops each. surely 70 running at 2TFlops would be more efficient, cheaper, and MUCH smaller.
Also add to that the fact that the "TOP 500" list has machines that "only" do 1.1Tflops at the bottom of the list so everyone would then technically have a "world contending supercomputer" in their home just to play GTA: San Andreas on.
Seems a little excessive dont you think ?

I don't think any Xbox owning kiddie is going to want to run that.... and his dumb "sit the kid in front of the tv, instead of learning to talk to him" parents won't want the xbox on 24-7. Once again the techies save the planet.

Yes, I'm thinking you've conjoined CPU + GPU performance into a singular figure. Do we have distributed processing clients running off GPU's yet? If not, scratch 80% of that performance.

we did nothing of the sort.. they are just the listed specs. If the manuf specs arent what they say they are then have a go at them :)
However.
There have been distributed applications re-written for GPU`s, i remember reading about it a few years back... but it was a version of folding at home i think.

update :
Well i found this on the FAH website.. i guess its true there is a ps3 FAH client comming out and looks really cool. Put those cells to some use heh

I wonder if the scoring system will be the same for WU done on a ps3 :P i think il see my score rocket.
Dont know what to think about this though..
The PS3 client will also support some advanced visualization features. While the Cell microprocessor does most of the calculation processing of the simulation, the graphic chip of the PLAYSTATION 3 system (the RSX) displays the actual folding process in real-time using new technologies such as HDR and ISO surface rendering. It is possible to navigate the 3D space of the molecule using the interactive controller of the PS3, allowing us to look at the protein from different angles in real-time. For a preview of a prototype of the GUI for the PS3 client
bit over the top on GFX imo.. do we really need HDR? still cool anyway.
