This is probably stating the obvious but I've never set up a lan party previously and want to try and do one with a few friends who are all into driving games.

The technical aspects of setting up a server and network are pretty straight forward, but I don't really have any idea what software is required to do this successfully. Or even which games are suitable.

Any help will be gratefully received :madhatter

Technically speaking (having set up a few 6 people+ LANs at mine) there isn't any network software you should need. As long as it's for a few people, all you need is enough hubs to all connect together, cables, power points etc.

Any game that you can play online will *generally* offer LAN play (MMOs excepted). My preference is for FPS games, but if NFS supports LAN play, that would be pretty good fun. OFC you need everyone to have a copy of the game before you play :D

Need for speed cirtainly offers lan play, you need to make sure your computers can talk to each other on the network (ip address, etc) and that if people use firewalls they open thr required ports to play. This info should be listed on the games help file/website.

Thanks for the fast replies, it gave me some direction in what to look for.

It seems NFS Underground doesn't support Lan Play, so we'll have to go for NFS Underground 2.

"Intranet" ? it's a LAN, you spod.

And don't worry, there are workarounds for Need for Speeds' networkability.

There is a NFSU multiplayer patch out there

I believe it's unofficial though

indeed it is, you will need the server and the client

run the server on one of you're machines and then all the clients should see it, the person running the server will also have to run the client as well.
