Waiting for my copy of GW's to arrive and will be going for a Monk on my first character. Can anyone give me a bit of info on what they are like to play.
Thanks

Monks are very strong, can take quite a beating.
But think carefully about your second class( it wont so much effect your character on the whole, as much as the extra spells you can use).
In case you didnt know here are the other character classes.
Elemental: Fire/water/wind/earth spells (good spells but energy hungry, dont choose this as a secondary class)
Ranger: these guys can charm an animal to tank with therefore hiding back and attacking, not many spell to these guys more just different attacks.
Warrior: Again not much to show for secondary class, just lots of different attacks.
Necromancer: Harnesses the power of death to heal allies, create boneminions/horrors to help you fight or just to attack enemies, some very good spells
Mesmer: These guys are tricky, but used correctly can be a warriors nightmare and a very good support char.
and ofcourse monk which your choosing.
Whetever do you dont choose, War/Mo so many noobs choosing that.
So i do reccomend either Mo/Necro or Mo/Mes

I went for monk first time round and their perfect for all rounders. You can chose to be offensive, a full on support healer or offer other support with various protection spells. I dont even use a secondary class I did chose necro as they offer some very good ways of healing yourself for minimal energy. But now all my points and skills are monk
The best thing about monk is you'll never have trouble finding a party even more so if you focus on your healing. You'll be in a party and fighing in minuets.

I played a Mo/Me is beta which was ok, i was primarily a healer monk though so i didnt use the mesmer skills too much. If your going to be a primary monk healing is probably your best choice possibly protection, youl want to take full advantage of your divine favour
My monk build basically consisted of a total healer.
Monk/Mesmer
Bump up:
Healing Prayers
Protection Prayers
Divine Favour
and some Inspiration Magic
Then basically be 95% healer monk, with some good buffs for clearing poison and hexes etc, only make use of the mesmer spells to steal energy for when you are low so you can keep healing.

Not tried most of the other secondries but I like my Monk/Ranger.
Sound like spreading yourself abit if you're going to be primary healer monk, but it's doable, can take just marksmanship and a good bow and take only interupt skills, makes good team support that way by interupting the big hitting spells. Or you can forgoe bows at all and take only wilderness survival for the self heal/defence and traps.
Had alittle try with Mo/E but couldn't find any way to make Elem work properly without loosing my mana for monk skillls, but I still believe there's a way to make any mix work, like Mo/W are more effective at the smiting return damage builds than W/Mo, since they take more damage, but can heal themselves more effectively, so it all works faster.

So I get to choose two skills? Monk and a secondary ability?
Im guessing that for the secondary ability you only get a few skills, compared to the full set for the primary ability.
Is that right?
What does a Mesmer do?
Each class has one attribute which is only accesible to primary profession,
ie. monks --> Divine Favor
Elementalist --> Energy Storage
etc...
you would invest xp into your attributes to improve your skills

Its a bit difficult to explain. Each primary class has a 'attribute' they can increase that you do not have if you take the same class as a secondary
eg: monk - divine favour - does additional healing when spells cast on ally
elem - energy storage - for each point in this you get increased mana
If you were to take Elem/Monk you would get energy storage, if you were to take Monk/Elem you would get divine favour.
You have access to all skills for both of your classes, your primary class just affects your special attribute (as listed above), your appearance, the armour you can equip and the runes you can use(to make armour better).
My monks are Mo/Me
And Mo/E (but i dont Use Element skills this char is only goin be a MONK with high healing powers etc)

well i have two builds for my monk, one is full heal-prot monk. a dedicated healer and well sought after in parties.
basically it consists of mainly points in heal, divine and some protection.
healing revolves around spamming heal other and word of healing which can both heal 380hp in roughly 1.5seconds. Aegis is also useful as i have it at about 9 seconds and in a party, it is a lifesaving move. (it gives all party members 50% chance to block attacks)
my other build is basically a mass killer which can kill many many enemies in a few seconds on my own but it has several flaws which we won't discuss now :P
however gaining stupid amounts of drops, exp and the pure feel good factor makes up for those flaws :p
