Fresh from E3 (which kicked off today) we have this hot new movie of Quake 4 available for you to have a gander at.

Raven Software have been developing the latest title in the genre-defining Quake series using ID Softwares Doom 3 engine.

This is the first movie of the game that has been made available so naturally you'll want to take a look.

Doesn't look very "Quake" like to me

looks more like another Doom 3

O dear o dear o dear. It looks just like Doom 3, it would be nice to think they are going for a decent fast paced multiplayer frag feast like Quake 3, but this looks like a slow paced Doom 3.

O well, its only a trailer, the game might be some good..

coor!

my only niggle is that while I love the story behind quake 2 and I was hoping this was going to be quake 2+ the idea of becoming a strogg to defeat them doesnt really sit too well with me, but this is Raven and Raven make good games so i say bring it on!

erm did i miss something, it looked quite fast?

So much of that video reminded me of other games! Neck snapping from behind, Splinter Cell. Spinning claw hand, Painkiller. Large spindly legged walking alien, Half Life 2 strider. Hell even the gameplay looked similar to Halo. The one thing it didn't remind me of is Quake!

The only thing in that that says Quake (other than the naf commentary) are the shots of the good old Beserker.

Exactly!

To me making a Quake game in a non-Quake engine is just... wrong

"non quake engine" All the 3 previous quakes had entirely different engines from each other. All made by ID, this is using the latest generation of IDs engine... I don't see the difference...

Agreeing with chris on that one, hell you can't even link the quake games together if your basing it all on the engine, and the original quake could have been said to play like the original doom, just using a new engine...

I think it is going to be win, PURE.

Well looking at it finally, i feel rather disheartend.

Infact i only want this game for the Multiplayer :(

looks like we will have to wait until quake 5 gibby!
haha seriously though i hope the multiplayer in this is as fast paced and fun as in quake 3 or even quake 1! im sure it will be a great game anyway.

Looks Great but you can See they are using the doom 3 Engine

I still don't get what's wrong with the doom 3 engine. That could be fairly fast paced.

i wans see Quake 4 osp CTF :D :D :D :D :D Quake 4's single player is carrying on from Quake 2, whilst the multiplayer is based on Q3A... dont worry, they've covered all eventualities...

the whole 'becoming a Strogg' is clearly a Borg ripoff, but it looks like a damn good way of telling the story... Personally, im looking forward to this game, although Raven have a lot to do (in my eyes) to recover from the rubbish that was Jedi Academy & SoF2...

Anyway, why are the marines blue in the movie? Censorship?

(and they haven't added 4 prongs on the Quake logo... whats that all about?)

Hay i like the doom Engine.....
Just sayin you can tell its being used in Quake 4

i'm sure the engine has nothing to do with the pace of the game. if you asked the engine to do what was asked of the Q3 game (same game rules, same game content, gfx, sound...) it would fly.

Quake engines have always been slightly non-realistic, fast paced physics and have a "bouncy" feel

Doom 3 does not.

i hope just as much as anyone the multiplayer is Quake 3 in style :p

Gotta agree that i don't think the doom 3 engine will fit right for a quake game. imo the doom 3 engine was designed for the style of game that doom 3 is, atmospheric, pant browning and generally slow (slower than quake games are reknowned for being anyway and less bouncy).

I have to admit that quake 2 was my least favourite quake and i could never put my finger on why, though i think it was because of the fact that it was slower than the other two, and i like my quake games fast and gibby!!!

Still, if they can make the doom 3 engine feel, look and play like a quake game then hell, it will rock!! :D

this is what im hoping they'll do

tweak the physics to be more "quake like"

hopefully change the look a bit more so its not so Doom 3 and is more Quake 2 (though i did prefer Quake 1 by far - Quake is a nice paradox of the futuristic and medieval scenarios - Quake 2 was too futuristic and Quake IV looks to be the same)

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is already more Quake than Quake IV ever will be.

People are already touting it as the new competitive medium for the Quake series, and from what I've seen, I have to say I agree.

QW:ET it has a lot going for it.
1) it's free. properly free
2) it's the strogg wars on earth
3) BF style game (?)
4) doom3 engine = pretty
5) not another ww2/"teh evil nazis" game

You sure about that ?
I've not seen anything saying that, and shacknews at least says it won't be.

Wasn't the Quake 2 engine a heavily modified version of the Quake 1 engine (hence similarities between Q2 and HL)?
