MPUK are #180 in the list :D
Well it doesn't sound amazing, but thats out of 1,257,678 members with 3,104,197 machines.

I know this won't be a very popular point of view - but does anyone know of any "good thing" to have come from these distributed computing efforts?
There probably have been some, but compared with the enormous amount of energy being wasted on these things, I'm curious as to whether the payoff is worth the cost.

In WK's case the computers would have been on anyway most likely, and a CPU processing vs a CPU idling is hardly anything power wise, even over a period of years.

Chris is, of course, correct.
I have the client installed on my servers, and workstations that i dont turn off.
Its also on boxes that onyl get powered on occasionally, but they still register some reasonable input.
As for whether or not anything good has come of it, i dont know, but i`m sure its got to be more productive than looking for aliens.

400,000 years of computing time

Thats basically saying if you only ever ran UD on a single PC in the whole world... it would take 400,000 years to process as much data as we have done collectively so far.
Quite an achievement tbh.

In a word yes it is worth it....... but to what level I couldn't say. There is a study on how much extra pollution is caused if you leave your computer on to run this project but the amount is very low. I remember one article comparing it to how much pollution is caused by 50 extra 5K flights a year on an average jumbo.
But what I do know is Climate Predictions work has been used a fair few times. Find a drug seems one of the most promissing Bio projects for the moment. We will have to see how the IBM/ISB WCG work gets used.
These little known projects seem to get results and publish them. UD is probably the worse for not saying anything apart from once a project starts. It is true they have to get the details of other companies and universities but event when the data has been out for a while the site is not updated.

I imagine that simply eliminating the wrong answers, or proving the absence of something can be just as valuable as finding the right answer. If it narrows down the areas in which 'proper' research can be done most constructively then surely it is a good thing.
On that note I am considering instaling this to contribute, years ago I ran SETI, but I feel that this might be slightly more constructive.
Edit 1: OK ... I'm now the 100th member! ;)
Edit 2: Make it a requirement for the 1000+ 4 Day LANs, see how many we can chomp out in 1 i-series event :)

Sorry for the super necro here but I suppose its better than creating a new thread (there not free ofc)
Just wondering are there any SETI/Dist Computing teams from MPUK still?, if so how/can I join? got 7 pc's ready at the moment.
