Its a shame but i feel like am going to HAVE to change my connection due to the providers idiocy.

Currently i have a 512k uncapped connection from Central Point.
the best thing about it was its price!.. £18.99 a month AND only a 3 month contract.
But i have been having problems. basically the contention they state of 50:1 must be a joke. during the day till about 5pm or so my connection is fine.. download tests get thereabout to 500kps and my ping in cs:s for example is about 20ms-50ms max.. but hit the later hours and ALL evening my ping gets to about 150-200.. and download test show the connection anywere between 180kps - 350kps... obvious coming up against big contention issues. i contacted central point,... but the problem is they just dont know anything. they actually buy there broadband from a big supplier and then pass the discount on to their clients on a domestic level. so if you have a problem they cant answer it, they have to then chase up the people that they get the connection from.. its a nightmare, things just dont get sorted out.

So i feel i will have to change if they cant sort it out.. seeing as i only really use the connection at night i dont wanna be paying for 512k when im getting a worse connection that a 150k broadband.

SOOOO... find me someone new that cheap but actually good!. 512k is all i really need. i dont even mind a cap.. as long as its not stuipd like 2gig.. any big files i download at work anyway. so i dont use my home connection allot.. and id rather not have to sign up for a 12 month contract.

any recommendations appreciated

www.plus.net

Excellent service, loads of 'extras', static IP (seems to be a must for a lot of people now) and absolutely top notch tech support if you ever need it (they actually phoned me back at home after getting BT to fix a problem that meant I wasn't getting full 2m/bit throughput).

Can't really complain at all. :)

hmmm they look good and do a free migration too.

unsure what package to go for though.
dont want the premier (uncapped) as its too much for my use

so its pay as you go. (1gig cap and then £1 per gig over that - i currently pay 18.99.. and this is £14.99 +any extra usage.. so i can get 5gig for what i currently pay. more than what i prolly use tbh)

or i go to Broadband plus. were it says that in busy times it gives priority to web surfing and emails instead of downloading.. but seems to be uncapped - at £14.99

obviously the last one looks the best but i dont want the same situation i have now.. priority to email and web... does that mean after 6pm my ping will go from 20ms to 200 again?

anyone else use them?

I think Metronet is probably one of the best choices for you.

payasyougo, works out very cheap for infrequent users.

And I could be wrong but I think a couple of people on these forums work for them.

But having said all that, do have a check through adslguide forums. Thats easily the best way to find out what providers are like.

well they l;ook ok but more expensive than plusnet.. they only give you 200meg download.. then £2.10 extra per gig..

ill easy use over the 200meg.

Plus net PAYG looks very nice at the moment. with static ip... would be good to sign in from work to check things when needed. and i certainly wont use more than 5 gigs just playing the of game and downloading the od file.. like i say i download anything big at work anyway becuase i have complete access as it manager to the bonded lines here.

If you live near a EasyNet LLU, then you can get .5Mbps for £9.99 a month, with no cap from UK online
