Ok, not exactly looking to buy one, but my friend is asking what is a good laptop to buy and where to get it from, can anyone help me shed some light on the subject?
He says price isnt an issue, but for ease lets keep it below £1000, he is looking for it to run games like HL2 and doom3 at decent speeds, but not worrying too much about the quality. He needs it for being able to do work, listening to music, and watching dvds. any responses relavant would be greatly appreciated

I know there are half a dozen people who will disagree with me, but you could do worse than look at an Acer laptop.
If you pay a visit to THIS PAGE (https://sslrelay.com/s77548008.oneandoneshop.co.uk/sess/utn;jsessionid=15424093a38df24/shopdata/0130_Notebooks/0033_Aspire/0095_Aspire+1800/product_overview.shopscript), you can see a number of Aspire 1800 laptops with varying spec and price. The one that caught my eye was the Aspire 1804WSMi 100GB for £1131.50 inc.VAT. Take a look at the page for the full spec list, but bear in mind is has the PCI-E version of the ATI graphics card in there so it is going to be pretty good for gaming.
Just my opinion. :)

I've got an acer 2010, 1.5ghz centrino, 9700, dvd writer, 512mb ram etc, can handle most things thrown at it and battery life is very good, 2 hours when gaming, about 5/6 hours when surfing the net and general low performance tasks.
I bought this last august for £920 so I'm sure you can get one for around the same price with a better spec now.

TBH, acer can go either way. Spec and price wise there great, however there reliability is debatable. I have an acer 1500 (athlon64 3000+ radeon 9600 mobility) and it's been great, i use it for all my gaming (thats painkiller, half life 2, doom 3) but other people that i know have had these go wrong in some areas.
Mine has gone wrong once, when the hard drive failed. Lucky since i had acer advantage, they picked it up, and delivered it back within 5 days.
even with acer advantage it was only just £800, which even now is a good price for an athlon 64 laptop.

i just like any with a decent gfx card and pentium M as its short thingy makes it well good for running FPU intensive stuff (3d games) granted its **** for encoding but neh, depends on needs really, i like the acer that zenith suggested, but wouldnt like to comment on the gfx card, ok crd but 64mb memory? thats a bit low imo im sure there are ones for similar price with less frills and more memory on the card.....
...then again i aint looked at laptops or prices for a looooooong time so yea i could easily be wrong
