Is this a windup?
50 computers, I guess this is for work..
Well you need 50 network cards, 50 pc's, a couple of switches/hubs, to enable the 50 pc's to communicate, 50 lots of cat5.
Then, maybe a server for central file sharing, Nt4, or Win2k or novell 5 on it, or maybe unix for geeks..
Possibly add another small server for printer pooling, add a printer with network card, like an hp2100.
Then, add some sort of internet connection, not a modem, link up for internet access for work, add another server maybe for email and your done.
Funny enough its exactly what I am doing now for work, although I am buying 120 Computers across 3 countries and 12 locations..
all compaq deskpro ex's (866) which are a dam sight better then the current lot of 133's we have..
If you are serious let me know, I can give you a very thorough run down on what you need, and in what order..
Planning is more important than anything else for this, get it wrong at the start, it will cost you buckets later on.

I think that Zhar is with me on this one... If you have 'Never set up a network before' and you want to set up a 50 PC LAN then you are nutts. Either
1) Get someone else to do it
2) Spend a LONG time talking to me and Zhar...
If you live near south UK then I could help you out as I have 16 comps networked and although it isn't 50 - I have had plenty of experience...
Ok - decide what you want to do then let us know!

Of course if you're wanting to discuss large-scale roll out of high-speed networks using backbone technologies such as Layer 3, RIP, OSPF, V-LANs, etc... then post here too :D
A 50 machine network is a relatively simple affair to be honest, as you can do it all one one subnet. Cheeky question coming now... what budget do you have for the installation? This will affect what network you go for, PCs, operating systems and servers (licensing will be an issue), etc., etc.
Of course our "consultancy division" could always help you... we do contract out our services to people wanting to setup networks, both temporary and permanent, from small scale to large scale. Cheap pimp there :)

In addition to zhardoums list, i would say,
1 x MCSE Networking Course, and a proper IT education. I mean why are you even attempting this ???

Look, setting up a basic network is easy, any half ****wit can do it, but to configuare it, and maintain it running smoothly, well you need somebody that knowws what they are doing.

Indeed.
I learnt about peer-to-peer networking from trying to setup simple games between my machine and my mate's PC.
From then I went to college and got my C&G Networking Level 2 (?60 evening class, one night a week for 3 months).
I'm planning on doing a MCSE within the year... and networking is a nice chunk of that.

indeed jase, i mean i did it after all :) but that was on half a dozen PC's with peer-to-peer (no servers) and its piss easy. But as soon as anyone says 10 + machines that spells NT or 2k server, and lots of hassle and experience in large doses, Monk and I have set up a small network at college with a dozen machines and a single Nt server, it took us the best part of a month to set it up (ok so drivers for the NICS was an issue) but it does require some skill with WINS, DCHP (DHCP, DPHC... i dunno take yer pick), etc ... to get them talking correctly. All i can say is, it will be a learning experience, and get a good networking book.

I would rather not!
Setting it up simple....... keeping it running who knows never kept one running! :)

Scott Adams (Dilbert Writer) once suggested that network administration was like herding cats.
"No one can do it, and once you think you have everthing going your way, the bastards turn round and scratch the hell out of you"
