Do you know how to telnet onto IRC?
I know the host and the port (6667)
Have I just got the bottom box wrong??
I would just telnet into my eggdrop, but I don't think my skillz are up to it (and I forgot the address) and I don't want to break it...
:(
A little help here please?
;)

Did I mention that I was doing this via a shell account?
Unless there is any other way to get on without using mirc-y things or that nasty web-based thing (my work computer has summat against it)
:p

strych, if your at work and MIRC doesnt work then, you will not be able to open the port to access the IRC server, as your firewall/proxie hasnt got the port enabled (for obvious reasons). Some form of port tunnaling/forwarding on 8080 (http standard) then you might get away with it.

of course an SSH link into a shell and use a spare bg proc for bitchx can have you on IRC in no time bypassing the port lockout ;)

I dont think you can telnet into IRC like the way you are thinking...
However, you could setup an eggdrop and monitor a channel and speak through the eggdrop.....

Its not that it won't LET me, I just can't install the actual mirc.exe on my pute, or that web thing, cos tis not my workstation to abuse.
:P
I forget how my eggdrop works. I don't want to break it :(

Yes, you can telnet to port 6667 and make the appropriate noises. IRC, like many other internet protocols, operates on plain text.
However, aside from some g0dlike individuals who really scare me, I don't think I've seen anyone actually use it sucessfully.
However, all is not lost. There is a *nix IRC client called irc2, which you can download from sourceforge.net (and then compile).
It's not very user friendly, but there are a bunch of irc scripts you can download that make it more so - BitchX springs to mind.
It's a while since I last played with a *nix irc client, but if you have any trouble getting it working, email me the l&p to your shell account and I'll 0wn i... I may be able to help.

Shall I rephrase? :D
I can not download or install ANYTHING in any way, shape or form. I already have telnet on the machine (suprisingly enough) hence I wish to use telnet and nothing else. Otherwise my workstation would be fully P&Pd by now :p

I was suggesting you install irc2 on the shell account (which you said you had access to), not the windows box (hence I mentioned unix, rather than windows).
Can you not install anything on the shell box either? You do not need to be root to install an IRC client - it's entirely non-superuser friendly.

hmm, 99% of shell accuonts have BitchX pre installed (I know mine does :) ) so all you need to do is login to the shell account over telnet, and you use the IRC client within the shell, nothing new is installed or run from the workstation.
Simple as.

You know the password f00 :p
and it is IRC2 client, which incidentally, how to you get it to use more than one channel at once, and scroll back thru history :)
