After this last slan i am hooked on DOTA
as many people have warned me that online games are full of leavers and n00bs (slan games weren't?) it must be an idea to organise some great big DOTA games, mainly so we can be better than afty and finally own him ;)
so would anyone else be interested in some "DOTA lovin?"
please say yes. I'm suffering withdrwal here

Ignore pro in the title, everyone puts that, even if they aren't.
Just join a game, or even - start your own up and put noobs in the title if you want.

Clan XW is where DotA is at, although most of the vets are all lost in WoW now :). You'll often find some of us on there. perhaps we should also setup an IRC channel for people to meet in?

This needs organising a few days in advance, at least. I might be able to do Tuesday (tomorrow) night, but not until the w/e after then...

Another session is to be held tomorrow night, this time at 8pm (as we had such rubbish turn out for our 7pm game this eve)
Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays sound good?
this eves session went quite well (except r/l once again interfered and i had to leave the 2nd game before time :( )

Best bet is complete uninstall/reinstall, then just try and connect to bnet and it will auto-update with what you need.

Location location location.
We play dota at lans and wow, well, pretty much anywhere else. Some of us play both.
Anyway.
Clan MPUK/XW or the irc mpukdota channel if you want support and tips on how to pickup really bad habbits.
There's a bnet to Irc link in those 2 channels which is very clever.
Playing with people who understand you're newish >> random bnet idiots who will complain at your play like their lives depend on it.
I'd suggest you start there if you seriously want to learn to play 'well'.
Playing with randoms will just eat your soul.

Also, use Ventrilo :)
Details are available in the IRC channel - it will be the difference between you getting killed 4 times a game and 14 times a game.

unfortunately though, imo, its all well and good playing a few games until you start to understand the heroes when you have 5 of you playing ..... but after a while stomping over 5 random people on bnet with your group on voice comms is so unchallenging you'll learn nothing anymore :(

Plus, we do lose about 1 in every 7/8...

Sometimes you come up against a decent team.
Also just because know people doesn't make them good... (not aimed at anyone but there is a skill gradient)
Also playing to win isn't necessarily the only way to play. Sure you gotta aim to win, but dota's quite good for arsing around.

I've never played dota but I'd like to try it at the next StratLan. How easy is it to pick up if I've previous played and completed W3 and W3 Frozen Throne?
From what little I know you control a single hero character which you power-up?

It's got a steep learning curve - very different to other games on the market. Make sure you chat to someone for a few minutes about basic tips (or check the forums for the noobs guide) and try to sit next/near to someone on your team who can pair in a lane with.

The problem is there's a lot of very specific information that you just need to learn.
If you don't know what's coming it's very hard to defend against it, and as such you'll spend a lot of your time dying to what is technically called 'WTF'.
Playing WC3 won't help you because a lot of the abilities are custom triggered, and you really need to know what they do to be able to counter them.
Couple this with about 40 odd heroes and a world of items and you get Afty's learning curve of death.
TBH the sooner you start the sooner you can learn.
I'm not sure what's better way to learn about abilities; trying to cast them or being on the other end of them. I suppose the former to learn how they work and the latter to learn how to use them well.
Again best start now before they complicated it with more heroes...

If Stu starts screaming, that generally means something bad is about to happen. Remember that.

Hellfyre's screaming is the equivalent of a thousand helicopters all being silenced at once... when we globally mute him that is...
