If I was to host a 16, 32 or 64 player server of UT2004 or BF1942 how much bandwidth would it take up ?
Talking about over the internet, not a LAN and what sort of connection could I run one on at home ?

You can't run one at home. You really really can't. Especially as the upstream on most consumer connections is crippled

You could probably run a 16 player service if you had power cable broadband - 1meg down/1 meg up.
Alternatively I think NTL offer a fibre to home 100meg connection or will do soon. Although that could be a bit pricey.
Or if your on a uni connection you should have no problems at all.

100mb fibre? Hmm... Not heard anything about this, so can't comment, but sounds a bit far fetched.
Uni connections, believe it or not, will actually be more of a pain in the arse. Most of them using 10.10.x.x private address ranges and firewalled to hell and back - usually meaning you have no chance.
Even with 1mb up, pings would be terrible (unless it's something like Armagetron ;)).
You need an ownage clanserver (http://clanservers.multiplay.co.uk)</pimp> :)

Unless said uni connection is firewalled up to the hilt :D

General rule of thumb is to say each player needs 128kbit of bandy... so to allow 12 players to play with decent connectivity, you're going to need at least 1.5mb upload if not more...
Also remember end user dsl/cable connections will have shabby routing compared to say a high tier GISP like Multiplay, which also greatly affects your gaming experience & connection.

A quick google later...
NTL raises British broadband stakes (http://thebusinessonline.com/modules/news/view.php?id=32566&s=3&)
But nothing about it on NTL's actual website, or El Reg/Inquirer.

I wonder if the reporter is getting confused with megabytes and megabits?

It has been mentioned on adslguide a few times though.
