I just had a look at the Battleground Preview, (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/battlegrounds-part2.html) and this is something that would make me consider buying the game.
Don't know if there are other things like this on WoW but it really does look good.

Yup, looks fantastic.
Dark Age of Camelot had battlegrounds, but this seems to be far more advanced than a simple capture and hold. Quests! Mines! Capturable graveyards! Oh god hope they have a seperate quest log for it eek!
Note though, you'll need to be 57+ or so to compete - they'll be doing lower level ones, but the first will be aimed at the top levels.
Now all we have to do is wait, I wouldn't be surprised though if they put this in to coincide with the euro release (middle of feb ish).

My problem is that it's underlike DaoC :)
DaoC it was a case of "Hmm, I feel like doing a raid on a keep", then you just did it.
Here it seems you have to go the Tesco-Deli and pull a ticket and wait for your turn.
Heaven's knows how long an 'instance' lasts, though it'll have to be longer than an hour at least.
With DaoC, it was open. If your FullGroup couldn't handle the attack, you called re-enforcements who, for example, have just logged in at that moment in time.
With this, you can't. Say a level 50 Alliance guild decides to play; unfortunately for them, they have picked the same time as a level 60 Horde guild - no chance for backup, they simply have to ride it out.
Another problem is offline-organising. Due to the ticket-system, you can't simply say "We'll all meet at xyz time", you can't predicate the schedule of other raid parties on your server.

instances have taken whole evenings so far in beta.

You must be reading it totally different to me, I haven't read it as an instance at all. I've read it as a totally new zone of which there is only 1 of and anyone can enter at any time (up to whatever the limit will be).
Much like the BG1/2 etc of DAoC, it will be a constant battle that never resets or stops.
Ticket system? You mean the queue? Yes I imagine it will very popular and you might have to wait to get in to the zone, but if you want to head there as a guild, I guess you just all sign up at the same time and you wait 30 mins for a space...

If they're releasing this to coincide with the euro release, surely no one will be able to take part for a while because of the stats being reset? eg everyone on low level to begin with. :X
